Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

So I disovered Banjo Nuts & Bolts isn't exactly emulated 100% via Rare Replay / Backwards compat on X1, during the Nutty Acres level there's graphic glitches where water meets the shore, also there's suppose to be leaves(?) floating around the level which are missing entirely on X1.

I made a quick and dirty comparison which shows both issues, (X1 on left vs. actual Xbox 360 hardware on the right)

No idea if it's a known issue already but figured I'd share - http://vmashup.com/L2kD3tYP

EDIT: I've only compared Nutty Acres so far and just started playing the next level (Logbox 720) , so far no discrepencies discovered in this level.

Sometimes the graphical settings of games through BC are downgraded in order to achieve a decent performance. This was the case with Halo Reach until it got fixed. Perhaps it will get fixed too eventually for BK:N&B, but enough people would have to raise the issue.

How is the performance of the game on Xbox One?

im glad that of the hundred+ BC titles this year, giant bomb recognized VF5FS and eliminated objectively more popular games like mass effect 3 and oblivion before it

Jeff has always been a fan of the franchise (he's wrong about 3) but there were some sounds of recognition amongst the other guys too

idk i guess i just really love that game a lot

I'd need the rest of my RPGs to make the jump in order to permanently discard my 360.

Infinite Undiscovery, the Dragon Ages, the Final Fantasy 13's, The Last Remnant, Enchanted Arms, a couple others.

They said it was a "decent version" of that game.

Is it because there no single player campaign I wonder?

I like S-tier Akira

Okay, here's my real list. It includes everything I want (so take notes MS!):

  • Ninja Gaiden Black (OG Xbox)
  • Panzer Dragoon Orta (OG Xbox)
  • Ninja Gaiden 2
  • Infinite Undiscovery (with FPS boost)
  • Sega Rally Revo
  • Daytona USA
  • Anarchy Reigns
  • Vanquish
  • Geometry Wars 2
  • Super Street Fighter II HD Remix
  • Ultra Street Fighter IV
  • Blue Dragon Digital Release
  • Lost Odyssey Digital Release

Anything that's not that will be met with groans.

We got the digital release of BD and LO, but this list still isn't done yet.

I'd like to add Virtua Fighter 2, however.

I just want Ghostbusters. I'm thinking maybe it's not bc yet because the movie is owned by Sony. I'm betting it has to do with licenses.

Ghostbusters is probably in a weird situation. Quick timeline:

  • Ghostbusters releases in 2009 published by Atari
  • Sanctum of Slime releases in 2011 published by Atari
  • Sanctum of Slime becomes backwards compatible April 2016
  • Activision releases a Ghostbusters game based on the new movie July 2016
  • Both Ghostbusters '09 and SoS are still available in digital marketplaces, however both are still listed as published by Atari.

I can't see Sony stonewalling this. If they did block it, no one would be able to play it on PS4 anyway, and they'd end up losing out on whatever portion of sales they'd get from the BC version. That means there's either an issue of who holds the license between Atari and Activision (though SoS already being backwards compatible may prove otherwise), or it could just be giving them technical issues.

Sony Pictures is not PlayStation though. It's totally possible Sony Pictures is mucking things up for some arbitrary reason. Not saying that's the case, just that it's conceivable because who the hell knows with studio licensing sometimes.

The PlayStation division almost certainly doesn't care in the slightest either way, but even if they did it wouldn't matter because the rights are under a different branch and Sony is kind of notorious for being unable to get their divisions playing well together without issue.

It's possible. They did let Sanctum of Slime go through though, but who knows what's changed between April and now?

Edit: FWIW I had interpreted Robert807's post as meaning SIE was trying to prevent it from happening. If he just mean Sony Pictures itself then I agree it's likely.

How is the performance of the game on Xbox One?

BK:N&B is one of the more challenging games out there in terms of performance. When it first shipped there was a noticeable framerate drop from the 360. More so than any other game.

I don't think games are downgraded. More likely that it was simply a glitch.

How is the performance of the game on Xbox One?

Performance so far has been pretty solid on Xbox One, areas that have slowdown on 360 remain smooth on Xbox One in most cases, the main world hub (Showdown town) has some slow down on both 360 / X1 but to a lesser extent on X1.

I noticed when first entering Nutty Acres the leaves floating around ARE present on X1 but then they glitch out (disappear) shortly after, This doesn't happen when playing on 360 so I'm guessing it's a bug vs intended performance boost shortcut.

Do you have a PC/Laptop that is (360 or so) capable at all?

GB is $2 on Amazon's sale. May be same price on Steam too.

I have a very short list now.

NCAA 14
Eternal Sonata
Tales of Vesperia

Is anyone still playing Lost Odyssey? the BC OT thread totally died.

between that game and Gears, I've spent way more time with my X1 using BC than not. I uses it

also, where Beautiful Katamari? i played the crap out of that on the 360. I'd give it another go.

I got to Disc 3 and slowed down. I'm playing BD really slowly these days.

I started playing it again after putting it on hold for something else... I can't remember what it was. I just got to Disc 2.

I got paid today so I went ahead and picked up all the Hitman games while they're on sale in hopes of future BC. Also picked up Darkstalkers for same reason. And picked up Catherine because it IS bc... feel good about all this.

Do you have a quote on this? Because this is not how BC is intended to work. It's basically a virtual machine running on a XboxOne with the 360 game image mounted. I highly doubt MS go into game code or even have access to it at all from developers of the original game.

Gears works for you? I can't sign in to XBL playing it without it crashing so I can't save my progress.

Takes from his behind

Halo Reach had a glitch of some sort, not intended. I don't know of ANY other game that looks worse. Precision is difficult, for sure, but MS has been doing an incredible job.

The only thing worth mentioning with BC is that performance is better, that's it.

I wanted to believe that the colour banding on Blue Dragon was due to BC but it isn't.

Yeah, not sure about Banjo but iirc Halo was calling for the lower res split screen textures due to an emulator bug which was fixed. It wasn't intentional

Get on with it already.

So it wasn't just me. I also noticed that some of the textures have been downgraded around Showdown Town and specular maps were missing.

Picked up Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon, Sniper Ghost Warrior, and Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 on the cheap digitally, in the hopes that they might go BC.

I did that after BC was announced and there's still games like GTA 4 that I got dirt cheap that still aren't BC. Paid off for a few though.

There's plenty of sales, so I just hold off now until they're announced.

yeah

it's region free on Xbox One

If you want to get technical about it, the game is still region locked.

It's just that since each game comes bundled with its own emulator, as far as the game knows, it is still running in the "correct" region. :)

Just got an Xbox One. Is it safe to buy the digital version of Red Dead Redemption, and if so, what's the best way to do this, from the Xbox store on the console itself, or on the website using a PC?

I've read there were issues with people not being able to get the download code to work.

Not quite how it works. The emulator itself actually is region free. Because there is no correct region for a region free game which most 360 games are.

GAF, I'd really like an answer ASAP about buying RDR digitally.

I do want to experience the game with the more consistent framerate that resulted from Xbox One backwards compatibility.

Sitting on the fence but wanting to pull the trigger. $29.99 and that does not include the GotY Edition stuff like Undead Nightmare which is sold separately as DLC....

I purchased the game digitally, IIRC, for $20 about a week after it was made availably digitally. I played it when it first came out in 2010 but only got about 5 hours in so this was my first run through and I loved the game. It still holds up beautifully.

That being said, it didn't come with Undead Nightmare and I kind of wish I had waited or at least bought the GOTY package. I've heard great things about Undead Nigjtmare because my initial thoughts were it was just RDR with a Zombie mode.

I've seen the GOTY physical at quite a few places for $20 and that was after Black Friday.

That's so weird. I bought the standard edition (definitely this version) digitally for cheap just after BC, and it did come with Undead Nightmare.
