Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

Watched a stream of somebody playing BO2 last night and got terribly nostalgic for that game, It still baffles me the way Microsoft got backwards compatibility to work on the One, I'm tempted to call it witchcraft.

True but now would also be the perfect time to drop a couple of niche games most people wouldn't care about. Barbie Horse Adventures type stuff, or maybe some old forgotten XBLA game like Wik and the Fable of Souls or Marble Blast Ultra.

I would care a lot about Wik and Marble Blast. MBU was a fantastic platformer and Wik I never completed, but have been wanting to. Personally, I'd take them over any CoD :)

I'm really curious as to why Tales of Vesperia still isn't available.

Namco Bandai have had no problem supporting BC previously (Tekken, Dark Souls, etc.), and since we have Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey already, I wonder what the hold up is.

It will come, just give it time. Unlike the crappy OG Xbox BC on 360 they seem to do extensive testing for each game this time around and I assume RPGs are going to take longer.

all I want is OG Xbox BC with disc support and native upscaling

MS pls

Imagine OG Xbox games getting the Dolphin treatment: 4K, 16x AF, AA, v-sync and all frame rate hiccups ironed out on Scorpio.

More people should be crying out for this. :(

That's a great dream but a totally unrealistic one. We'll be lucky to get OG Xbox emulation at all, much less enhanced up the wazoo. On top of the technical challenges, there's the whole Nvidia licensing problem. I'm not saying it's impossible but it's unlikely. I wouldn't let myself get excited or hyped up for it because it will only lead to disappointment. I think at best we'll get OG at original resolutions but with more stable framerates.

When you say "disc support" you mean that you insert your OG disc and it downloads the X1 version of that game (if supported) just like the 360 games do now, right? Because there's no chance it will emulate straight off the disc.

I'm not trying to be a buzzkill here but we need to keep realistic expectations.

While I can agree about the disc support and emulation chances being slim, that doesn't mean there's not other options besides that, that are realistic. As evidenced by the Phantom Dust and Grabbed by the Ghoulies (Rare Replay) ports, they have already done work porting OG Xbox games and updating them graphically to a degree (while also adding the latest iteration of Xbox Live in the case of PD), so I would imagine there's a bit of familiarity at this point.

Rereleasing the OG Xbox library as value-priced "enhanced ports" with updated and re-enabled Xbox live (priced seperately like PS2 to PS4 titles or as a collection like Rare Replay, not sure which one would be better) would serve a few purposes, but mainly serve as a gauge to track interest in older IP's while also throwing a bone to longtime fans.

I hope so.

I hope not, it's just with no other games from the series available on the xbox platform, had a itch to play this one and didn't full like digging the 360 out.

Agreed and this is the most likely scenario. Phantom Dust, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, and the upcoming Voodoo Vince seem to point to this solution. The problem with OG is there are a lot of licensed properties. A big OG push without games like Crimson Skies or Mechassault 1 or 2 would be disappointing. They'd have to get Sega on board too but even things like the soundtrack in JSRF might be a problem from a licensing perspective.

To be honest, I'd just be overjoyed if they added support for the Xbox Originals already on the Xbox 360 marketplace. There are some pretty good Xbox Original games you can buy on your 360 like Ninja Gaiden: Black, Psychonauts, and GTA: San Andreas (this one's not available to buy anymore though, I think edit: yeah, only the 360 version is available now), and Max Payne 1 & 2, Jade Empire, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

I know OXbox emulation on 360 was underwhelming and I had "issues" when playing Panzer Dragoon Orta so I stopped, but I never had any problem with the downloadable games.

Yeah, and that's a good point. The biggest hurdle to OG Xbox on modern consoles has probably always been the legal aspect, rather than a hardware one. This is where I would hope Microsoft would lead the charge and get the legal work done then release all their OG Xbox first-party titles (especially Crimson Skies), not all too dissimilar to what's planned with Xbox 360 BC first-party wise.

At some point, Microsoft have to acknowledge the fact that with the combination of shoddy hardware (OG Xbox leaky batteries), lack of emulation support on PC, and the ever decreasing amount of physical copies in the world as time goes on, the ability to revisit their beginnings in the console industry are at danger of being lost with time, and that should not be the case.

While at this point I would take it, I think alot of games deserve better than that, and using the same emulator the 360 used could potentially cause even more compatibility issues when bought over to the One or Scorpio.

That's why Phantom Dust has been such an interesting project to watch.

How many OG Xbox games even support widescreen? That stretched or windowed view isn't going to impress.

A lot, if not the majority, supported widescreen. I worked on a few third party titles for that gen and pretty much everything we did from about 2002 on could be set to anamorphic widescreen, so about 6 OG Xbox games at least.

I honestly would prefer it if MS just did a throwback program for their OG Xbox games and do what their doing with Phantom Dust and Voodoo Vince to the rest of their first party catalog. This way, we could get Xbox Play Anywhere support, visual upgrades, matchmaking etc.

Just my opinion though.

They have my money if they do Mech Assault.

Yeah, that would be a great idea. Maybe those games were a test. I think the problem with original Xbox games is getting the permission, who owns what etc. probably a bit more complicated than 360 games. Unfortunately those issues still crop up for remasters.

I would take , Ninja Gaiden Black, Mech Assault, Crimson Skies, Midtown Madness for the throwback program among others.

Side thought, Microsoft need to get all their old PC games on the Windows Store etc. Hell, do a deal with GOG.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Giving gog.com visibility is probably microsoft doesn't want to do. Took them a hell of a long time before acknowledging steam

At the start of this generation I thought 360 on XB1 was unrealistic. They must have a working OG Xbox emulator given Grabbed by the Ghoulies was on Rare Replay and it ran at 1080p and Phil Spencer posted a Phantom Dust screenshot on Twitter that exceeded 480p. OG Xbox games at 4K with 16x AF and V-sync and better frame rates is well within the bounds of reason.

But who wants to play all those great XBOX exclusives and the superior multiplats!

Beats me!

Those are both ports, not emulation. A team of programmers rewrote the engines to be X1 native. That's probably the way they are going to go, but it means a very limited selection of OG games will ever get the treatment because it's expensive and time consuming in comparison.

So much this. I would kill for a remastered MA

One of my dream E3 announcements would be a surprise MechAssault 3 trailer for Scorpio followed by the announcement of a $20 MechAssault 1&2 BC port to X1 available on XBL immediately following the conference.

You're right, they are. Oops!

Going to ask this question here instead of making a new topic:

I have some games on my Japanese Xbox account but when I try to download them to my 360 using a VPN (the downloads don't even start without one) they fail at around 80%. Anyone got any experience with this?

I hope I won't need to go through this rigmarole on Xbox One when these games do get made BC!

I wonder if Microsoft are ever going to bother making Halo 3, 4 and ODST backward compatible on Xbox One, even though those games are already on Halo MCC.

I assume you're using a Japanese 360 right? It shouldn't matter anyway... even if you were downloading region locked games to a US/EU 360. For what it's worth I've never had to use a VPN to download things from the JPN store.

New thread? This article has some interesting tidbits.

"I also expect variations of titles that are perhaps running at 900p at 30fps on Xbox One today that they can leverage the 31 per cent boost to CPU clock along with a bunch of other optimisations in conjunction with our D3D12 offload to potentially offer 1080p60 rather than 900p30. It's totally up to developers.
That is such great news. I can't wait to go back and play some 360 games on Scorpio.
