Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

Agreed.

If they knew it wasn't going to be great and that there would be many technical and publisher related hurdles along the way then don't hype it up and announce it at E3 like its the next big thing. Because it really isn't.

Yeah im very dissapointed. I recently got an XB1 hoping some great games would come to BC. Its most arcade stuff im not interested in. Ive packed up my XB1 and will use it for trade in credit towards a second PS4 tomorrow since my launch PS4 is getting a bit on the loud side lol

Let's be real. Even if the BC list this month included Halo Wars, Black Ops 1, and even RDR, there still will be people who will complain about the new titles.

So trading in a system that has BC to one that doesn't, and may never will?

We've gotten exactly what they originally promised. And for free.

Entitled gamers, at it again.

I doubt it, those are games that loads of people want. Instead, MS release loads of crap that nobody really wants. Typical MS

Did everyone forget what BC was like on the 360? It was spotty at best, and the efforts to add titles faded pretty quickly. BC on the Xbox One is following closely in its footsteps.

Apologies to Witcher 2 and Mass Effect fans.

Mass effect plays like shit, and fair point TW2 is a big title. Anyway, this whole BC thing has been handled poorly, and queue a bunch of blind apologist Microsoft fans blindly defending everything they do.

You guys argue it out amongst yourselves

This BC is shit, they release a load of games nobody wants. Microsoft are so out of touch with their fanbase its ridiculous

Do you really think that is the reason? Really?

I disagree. I think they know very well what games people are most interested in; they even set up a voting system for it.

Reality is that emulation (something I used to be very involved in back in the day) is complex and not easy, especially if you're aiming for "perfect" emulation. They could easily throw dozens of popular games into BC with all sorts of bugs and performance issues. And then people would cry bloody murder that they did a half-ass job.

So, rock and a hard place.

Mass effect plays like shit, and fair point TW2 is a big title. Anyway, this whole BC thing has been handled poorly, and queue a bunch of blind apologist Microsoft fans blindly defending everything they do.

Thinking rationally doesn't support your rage. Oh how gamers love to rage on forums, and damn anyone who dares challenge their righteous fury.

Apologies to Witcher 2 and Mass Effect fans.

Witcher 2
Deus Ex
Mass Effect
The Entire Gears of War 360 Saga
Fallout 3
Rainbow Six One and Two
Ikaruga
Halo: Reach (This is what you get when you rush things out the door)

That's off the top of my head.

But not Halo Wars and Call of Duty so they must be ignoring their fanbase. Typical MS.

On the other side of the coin there are a whole bunch of people complaining about a free feature.

Bye.

Enjoy repaying for PS2 games you already own.

I want a new model PS4 anyway. I hardly ever use the XB1 compared to my PS4. I just thought that alot more good games would release for BC. So far only one has released which is Condemned.

Spent about 10 min in TW2 combat arena mode. It seems to run extremely well. Strangely, Beyond Good and Evil HD is having issues where it appears / disappears off my console to the point I have to re-download it, but then when I try, it won't let me...

Oh shut up. If people are apologists you're a whiney little brat. Don't group people into some stupid group.

Do you know the process behind this?

MS can't just throw out whatever whenever.

You guys realize they are doing this for free right? Shouldn't be complaining.

Yes, the massive conglomerate that is Microsoft is doing an immense favor to console owners by making their old games "playable" on current gen consoles. Something consoles 3 generations past were able to do with ease. But I shouldn't complain about the selection or performance of this freebie.

CS:GO is such an odd choice considering the zero support the console versions received post-launch. It'd be like jumping in a time machine.

Yes, the backwards compatibility of the PlayStation 1, Sega Saturn and Nintendo 64 was immense.

Nice try. PS4-->PS3-->PS2 = 3 console generations past.

Wait, so you're going to come in here and complain about the MS backwards compatibility schedule and then present the PS2 BC on PS4 as something that is actually competitive. They are making me repay for PS2 games I already own if I want them on PS4.

PS3 game streaming is an interesting strategy but lets not confuse that with being able to just put your disc in and play.

Then we can talk about how well PS2 BC on PS3 went.

Backwards compatibility has been an issue on anything outside Nintendo or PS Vita.

Weren't those all hardware, not software BC?

Absolutely (PS2, specifically) but that's a different conversation. The oddity of including BC via software emulation for both XB1 and PS4 is just weird to me when hardware BC proved to be more functional.

However, I understand that BC was never a design element for the current generation of consoles. It's still frustrating to me, though.

Wait, so you're going to come in here and complain about the MS backwards compatibility schedule and then present the PS2 BC on PS4 as something that is actually competitive.

Not at all. I was referring to my "3 generations past" statement with my main point being the PS2's ability. I'm not touting either PS3 or PS4's software BC because they are both equally frustrating.

Oh sorry for making a valid observation, silly me.

Bye.

At E3 they announced that 100 titles would be available at launch with more added in the coming months.

That's exactly what we're getting.

This piece by piece release format is no different than what you get on the eShop with their back catalogue or on PSN with PS2 and PS1 games.

Things have to be prepped and approved for release and publishers are going to be involved in that process.

I would not be surprised by this.

Nobody here is mentioning competing consoles apart from you. Someone is clearly hung up on what other consoles are or aren't doing. Nothing like defending something by throwing what other people are doing into the ring.

Has anybody played Condemned? I really want to play it again just haven't heard anybody comment on its performance? It was never a high fps anyway so I'm guessing it's at least acceptable to play?

Agreed.

My point exactly if you didn't think you could pump 20 to 30 titles a month out why not just say hey there a still baking we'll release as they are ready.

Instead they built this shit up as a 20 titles a month feature when that's not been the case I can see why (myself included) people are upset. don't let us vote on games we want and then turn around and give us the exact fucking opposite blops 2 has like 100k votes same with rdr and you want us to be OK with age of booty? Some Bullshit wing game some interns made? Give me a break the list is a joke period the Witcher 2 is not it's saving grace get over it people ms has failed completely on this feature.

Because people are shitting on MS's efforts when in comparison to everything else we have it's actually not too bad. Yeah, I am drawing a comparison. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Instead they built this shit up as a 20 titles a month feature .

I don't recall this. Do you have a quote?

This and gears has been the only redeeming quality of this feature condemned plays awesome and is still fun as hell I personally believe it runs better then the 360 version did

I'm pretty happy with the games that have been released. Space Giraffe, a free copy of Witcher 2, the Gears of War series.... Considering that it wasn't even announced until E3 of last year. Still, can't please everybody I suppose.

Worst case scenario, you buy a HDMI switch for $15 at Monoprice and keep your systems hooked up.

This was also posted by Major Nelson:

In addition to adding a few new titles to the backward compatibility list, we’re also going to start releasing titles as they become available rather than a set monthly launch date. What this means for you is that you won’t have to wait to find out the latest titles; we’ll release whatever is available, when they’re available, once each title has received the engineering and publisher stamp of approval.

Hopefully some panties will become less twisted in the coming days/weeks.

How does The Witcher 2 play? I remember the 360 version being pretty impressive.

Haven't even dl'ed it yet, but someone earlier said they tried it and it was running well.

Also, is Witcher 2 a multi-disc game on 360? If so, that's a big deal because it's proof of concept now, so other multi-disc games can be done as well.

No quote but when the say the first month will have 100 games (which it did I'll give them that) people myself included was expecting at least 20 a month and please hold the quote if your just gonna come back with "I never expected 20 titles" because you you know damn well it's a lie everybody thought this feature was gonna be amazing again myself included but the fact is this "free" feature they hyped up to the heavens just has not delivered period.

So you built it up in your own head that it would be 20 titles in a month and now your disappointed with MS because they didn't do what thought they would do.

Hey, I am not too hot on this month's list either, don't get me wrong, but some people in this thread need to apply a little logic and perspective to how things actually work versus what they assumed they were getting.

This type of release schedule is no different than their competitors. We've seen this piece meal release schedule on various platforms. It's par for the course.

They're really dropping the ball on this. 360 is 11 years old and X1 is on its 3rd year. People barely play 360 anymore as is, and they're not making BC very enticing. Get some big MICROSOFT games in there. Alan Wake anyone??

You said consoles, so I guess you are including the Xbox, Dreamcast and GameCube's immense backward compatibility as well?

Caught me on my plurals!

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for now because I'm sure the engineering team had time off for the holidays. If it hasn't picked up by spring I'll be worried.

B/C is going to be a slow burn.... It's going to take a year or two to get really good and when it does it'll be... Really good.

BC is on a clock. We're already 3 years past the 360 era and halfway into the X1 era. Too long and people are just going to not want to play older games that aren't up to snuff with the current era. You need to dump everything now and get people to buy X1's. After a couple more years it won't be a system seller.

Some people ........

I have 15 games so far that would have been lost because I don't have a 360 anymore and all I had to do was hit install. No extra effort or money on my end.

I have more games that I'm waiting for RDR, BSI, BLOPS, DS, MGS HD.......and I can wait.

If you guys had such a desire to play your 360 digital purchases, why did you not keep you're 360?

Btw - I got the latest preview update but I don't see the GS leaderboard and neither am I able to rearrange the pins as advertised. Do I miss something?

I have my [you're?] 360. But I only have so many HDMI inputs on my receiver and I also like consolidation and *gasp* game recording and suspension which is only on Xbox One.
