Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

It was Major Nelson that said we're in for a big announcement on the 15th. Everybody hoped it was OG Xbox BC, but Phil shot that down in a tweet by saying he doesn't want people to get overhyped and that it isn't OG Xbox BC. I'm hoping for the emulator to make its way to Windows 10. I think that would be the best move Microsoft could make right now to speed up adoption of the Windows 10 store.

You can't just bring anyone's Xbox 360 3rd party games to the PC via an emulator. Pretty sure publishers and devs wouldn't like that, as they mostly already have PC versions for that purpose.

Completely different story if publishers give the okay, but I'm not seeing it. Same as "Play Anywhere".

Oooh. Source? (Just interested.)

That source was kinda debunked.

I genuinely think Major Nelson was teasing the ME2/3 + Skate announcements. They were some of the most requested games by a mile.

Adding another emulation layer on top of that? I shudder to think.

Since we are back on x86 it might make more sense to re-code the Xbox emulator to run directly on the X1. The big problem is the Nvidia chip set and GPU. You'd likely have the same graphical problems as Xbox games on the 360 since the X1 is still ATI. Not to mention possibly having to pay Nvidia license fees.

Ahh ok, that makes sense. Didn't know they were starting this friday.

I don't really think we'll get a big sale tho other than the usual Black Friday one. But it'd be nice to see MS put every game and DLC they've published on sale. I know I'd pick a few up if the price is right.

Well, so far we have Forza Horizon 2 & Motorsport 6 on sale for the weekly deals, with Recore, Gears 4, and Horizon 3 coming this weekend.

Also, Windows 10 versions of Quantum Break, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Ori DE are all going on sale.

I'd say we'll have quite a decent chunk of MS (published or sponsored) games on sale.

Phil if you are reading this I will love you 5ever if you add tales of vesperia and ninja gaiden 2 today.

It's more than forever.

QQ, aside from framerate differences are there any notable bugs in Xbox One's backwards compatibility?

I know for xbox on xbox 360 there's a long list of problems in compatible titles like "In Co-op severe graphic glitches make the game unplayable for the second player." or "All real-time shadows are missing in outside areas during the day."

Xbox One BC is far less buggy and games generally operate as they should, I think owing mainly to the Xbox 360 GPU being ATI like the new consoles rather than a different platform as in the original Xbox.

Unless I'm mistaken XB1 BC is mainly a wrapper with a recompiled executable for the different CPU.

Today's additions --
  • Dead Space Ignition
  • Escape Dead Island

They tried to basically write a (near) custom emulator for each game to get it up and running. Which meant each game took a lot of time and was incomplete and had bugs.

XB1's 360 was "okay, we're just gonna re-implement the entire console stack, which is a lot more work upfront and longer to get going but will pay back in compatibility amounts" and there you go

Jesus Microsoft, what a wasted opportunity.

Agreed. Kind of odd that they didn't do anything for the 15 Year celebration. They are usually on the ball with this stuff. ME on N7 Day, Force Unleashed on May 4th, and they even gave us Castle of Illusion the day before it was pulled from the store.

Oh well... there's always Thursday...
