Xbox One Launch Thread [Thread being archived 1/1/14]

I think you can designate if it only goes to HD channels or SD. I know Comcast reports channels as HD or SD and you can filter out SD with their tablet app so I'm assuming the OneGuide should be able to do that.

That's good. I wouldn't be happy if SD ESPN would show up instead.

It's frustrating when you forget to charge your controller and then you need to be tethered to the console if you want to play.

Easy solution. Buy a 15 foot 2 dollar micro USB cable from MonoPrice.

Anybody know - does the IR blaster for the cable box sit within the Kinect or is it a seperate feed? I'm wondering how a line of sight signal like infrared is going to work with my setup as it is shelved and I want the Kinect up high.

IR signal bounces in whatever it can in your room.

The option to waste money on batteries or spend extra money on something that should probably be packed in the box?
Eneloop rechargeable batteries cost fuck all, don't lose their charge when not used, can be swapped out when they run out and last a lot longer than internal batteries. Fuck internal batteries. :)

No idea, I don't own a PS4. But I don't think it's hard to plug in the controller when you're done playing to charge up, most people don't have 8 hour long marathon sessions.
Buy rechargeable batteries. Have one pair charging while you play with the other. When it dies out, charge those and switch to the pair that you've been charging for the past god knows how long.

This should last you for quite a while. (if you don't already have rechargables). And that was just a few minutes of searching. I'm sure you could find cheaper.

Remember that movie Entrapment, where that Welsh tart has to crawl under all the laser beams so she doesn't set off the burglar alarms with her bum? Your Kinect does all that invisibly and seems unperturbed by line of sight.

I was thinking about how this magic happened on the bus trip home today.

Dat ass makes a lot of sense.

Hope Rogers in Canada is supported by Xbox One real soon. I know the HTC One supported Rogers when it launched.

Yeah it really is the best way. I just leave most controllers just plug up to a long cable. Some reason i always thought i would get better gaming performance with a wired vs rf/blutooth.

Finally someone puts it in terms I can relate to.

My avatar is specifically chosen for replying to certain people around launch time.

This man speaks the truth. I MUCH prefer just swapping out my eneloops when the power gets low rather than tethering myself to the tiny PS3 cable that was provided every single time I turned the PS3 on because the battery would lose it's charge.

As others mentioned it's just using the IR light kinect blasts out anyway but FYI there is an IR out port on the console for an external blaster afaik

Look at it this way, if the charging port stops working on a DS4, your options are limited to either sending it in for warranty replacement, or buying a new one. If the charging port on an XBO controller stops working, I can swap out AA's or AA rechargables and have no missing functionality.

This is why Apple and other manufacturers get a lot of heat by making their batteries built-in. If something breaks and you're out of warranty, you either try to fix it yourself, or buy a new one.

The Dualshock 3 and 4 come apart with Philips screwdrivers. Anyone can replace the battery. Not hard.

There's a difference between having your battery die in a $500+ dollar device and a $50 controller. I've never even heard of anyone complain about Apple's built-in batteries and nearly everyone I know has an iphone or ipad.

How often do you hear of a charging port that doesn't work? My guess is the number falls somewhere around 5% of all Xbox/Playstation consumers, and that's a generous estimate.

In that scenario you're going to probably replace the controller instead of wasting money on batteries. It makes sense for instant gratification but not in the long run. Personally I think Microsoft should have thrown a play and charge kit in the box but that's just me I guess.

It's frustrating when you forget to charge your controller and then you need to be tethered to the console if you want to play.

How hard is it to remember to plug in a controller when you're done using it? That's the epitome of laziness.

I think both systems are pretty even. PS4 has the advantage of being able to simply plug the controller in to charge after using, Xbone has the advantage of always being able to swap in fresh batteries when they drain (and as a flashoholic I always have plenty of charged Eneloops on hand) for uninterrupted, untethered gaming.

You know, I wondered why I bought two DS4s at launch but I been using them as one charging while I played with the other. The battery is usually around 6 to 7 hours for me.

Is the PS4 cord longer than the PS3 one? That was my only real gripe with it, I was too closely tethered.

Battery debate is pretty weak.

Meh, until battery tech improves by leaps and bounds from what it is now, there will always be a debate for internal versus changeable.

Yeah it's not that big of a deal but I found it odd that Microsoft is still using batteries in a "next generation" console. It won't affect my enjoyment of the X1 but still is worth talking about.

Finally made the decision to go all digital with the XB1. It's going to save me lots of $$$ in the long run due to customs duty and shipping fees. Will likely only get physical copies of LE/CEs I really want.

Also there is supposed to be external HDD support in the future, right?

I'm not sure what you want me to say, I provided a real scenario. I also find it quite remarkable you've never heard of anyone complain of Apple's built-in battery, as nearly every Android user I know says that is one of the biggest reasons they avoid the iOS platform.

Having a rechargeable battery makes it exactly like the DS4, except that battery can be quite easily replaced. I just cannot find an issue with that at all.

EDIT: I want to be clear, I'm not saying that you're wrong, I'm just not seeing an argument for having an internal battery instead of a choice between rechargeable and not rechargeable. I suppose it could allow for the controller to be smaller, but that could throw off the ergonomics of an already great controller.

Yes, because taking your controller apart surely doesn't void a warranty, and is much easier than just sliding off a battery cover. Come on...

I get 10-12 hours. You may want to cash in your warranty chips.

I was in the PS4 hardware issue thread and other people were having issues also. My PS4 works fine so maybe I will call Sony and see what they can do for me. Anyways, back to the Xbox ONE.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
Not sure which live stream to watch.

I want to see some fighter within reviews! Game looks stupid...fun. But i'm going to need professional opinions before I drop another $60.

You god damn better believe. Eneloop is the best option.

I have had 2 Dual Shock 3 controllers end up with a dead battery, which is not easy to replace. I always prefer a removal battery in case of issues.

I didn't mean to be dismissive but it seemed like the last few battery threads turned into something else.
