Xbox: "Price Increases Are Never Fun For Anybody", but "We try to provide players with more of what they’re asking for."

360 USD a year is insane. For that money you could buy 2-3 big releases you actually care about on day one, plus a dozen great cheap games. TO OWN. And potentially resell.
Yes, but what is when you want to play online?
You'll need game pass essential for around 108 $/year and you have to add this amount in your calculation.

Nobody gives a shit about Fortnite or old Ubisoft games. Adding trash.

Both of these subs are already available separately. Grouping it into GP is just forcing it on people who never wanted it, the exact opposite of what he's saying.

Speaking to The Verge, Microsoft director of gaming and platform communications Dustin Blackwell said, "We understand price increases are never fun for anybody, but we're trying to reinforce by adding more value to these plans as well."

He added: "It's something we don't take lightly, and we're listening to the feedback of players and the community to try to provide them with more of what they're asking for."

For Game Pass Ultimate, Microsoft added more benefits to the membership like Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics, along with improved streaming for Xbox Cloud Gaming. The membership rate is going up to $30/month, from $20, representing a 50% price hike. You should not pay $30/month for Game Pass Ultimate right now, though, as many retailers have not raised prices.

For PC Game Pass, the price is going up from $12/month to $16.50/month, and one of the new perks is access to around 50 more Ubisoft games. PC Game Pass will also continue to get Microsoft's new releases on day one just like Game Pass Ultimate.
Access to 50+ Ubisoft games sounds like a threat! 😉

"You will pay more AND you will need to play Ubisoft slop!"

Best deal in gaming is only getting better! 🧐

Interesting wording there, provide more than I ask so you can justify higher price. Why not add Xbox console along with GP ultimate sub, and make it cost $250 lol

You just get a PS5 and buy what you need there? Still have to pay for online but a bit less.

Or better yet, get a gaming PC. It does not have to be $3K for pretty good 1440P and some 4K gaming.

this reads like the drama before the business update... is this new?!

He's been crashing out hard ever since the announcement was made.

Feels like his just engagement farming.
Timdog is a massive idiot, but he's actually connected to these execs and likely has a reason to panic like this, forget about playing with Phil Spencer, the dude literally met Nadella too.

It's not costing them much to add those things, which is why they are doing it.
Yep, they're getting sweetheart deals to get these things added on. Said deals being inked is also why they will never back out of this price increase.

Were they asking for higher prices? Because only a retard would have thought that Gamepass was going to stay cheap it did. Classic example of bait and switch but people seem to never learn

As for the own thing most games are downloads now so you really aren't owning anything regardless.

This only becomes true if the platform you own the digital games on ceases to exist.

So considering all your purchases are on Xbox, I understand why this is a concern and consideration of yours.

There's no need for price increases, Microsoft needs to figure this out the reality is you need 3-4 AAA games a year, Nintendo is so far behind with their online, Sony is the same thing as Microsoft but with super heroes, developers and publishers need to step in and fix this, gaming is for grownups and things change but how can we complain about subscriptions when we're told it's the future?

I want to see the receipts of people asking for Fortnite Crew and Ubi + Classics. I'm not going to bother asking about game access being removed from all tiers but GPU.

You more added value increased the price 50%. Shove that value up your ass and then shove it in Phills ass then both of you can be shoved in the CEO's ass

Shove whatever useless crew value up your ass while you are at it. As if people who got game pass are doing it for fortnite and not for the other nont free games they want to play.

Fucking useless idiots. Hope he read this msg too. What a clown response from a clown company

I mean they're absolutely paying Epic and Ubi money for the add-ons no one wanted, at least $5/month for both. The services are $20/month on their own, MS is absolutely not getting both for less than $5 or $7. Should have dropped that bullshit and just made it $25 or $23 and they'd avoided all this blowback. The massive $10 increase is what sent people into hysterics.

They'd have an exit clause where they'd pay Epic and Ubi a lump sum penalty that would probably be chump change compared to the amount of subscribers they've likely bled since this blunderous announcement.

Realistically how many games do you play a year?

It doesn't matter that CDs are empty, you can still resell them once you done with the game.
Not digital you can't. With Gamepass 30 maybe, before less because it costs far too much for one AAA game these days only to get bored of it a few weeks down the line.

Where's the value in that? Ok so you can resell non digital but most people buy digital these days, so you're left with 70 to 100 less out of your wallet and a game you're done with.

It is strange that a service that offers so many games in its library tries to justify its increase by bundling Fortnite Crew which is a pass designed for people that play a single game that is designed to keep them from playing other games. Surely the people that into Fortnite would just buy Fortnite Crew and save themselves $20 🤷‍♂️ I guess it is just perceived value and they know this full well and Epic have agreed to it knowing that these people are not the people that were never going to buy Fortnite Crew passes themselves, so it is free money for them.

It is. I'd argue that the 240 it used to be isn't the greatest value either when you look at what you actually play. If you are Gamepass only then maybe but if you have multiple platforms and don't spend a ridiculous amount of time gaming, how much value do you actually get?

After my sub expires, I will miss the ability to check out some of the cheaper games on the service that get some buzz. Other than that, the AAA games, I can buy the ones I actually want and my kids can play them in a few years if they are interested.

Maybe if you're a teenager with endless free time or a total adult no-life, Game Pass is a great deal. But let's be real, if someone wants to game on a budget, consoles aren't the place to be. Apparently you even need Core or whatever it's called just to play online. That means 6 to 7 years of paying over 100 bucks a year for the privilege of going online, on top of rising console prices. Meanwhile, PC games are consistently cheaper, and the upfront investment in a good rig pays off over the entire generation.

PR Speak is just getting tiring, because none of the value they're adding justifies the price increase. Most people don't stream games, and plenty of people don't play Fortnite or Ubisoft titles.

I'd rather have a tier to pay what I was paying, and just remove those useless features...but those tie-ins are just an excuse to raise prices on the service as a whole.

And who asked for Fortnite? Or Ubisoft classics you can get for next to nothing and actually own them?

They should at least invent new corporate answers to go along with a 50% price increase.

Is there a black market for selling retarded children V-Bucks? I would dump all my points for half price. PM me if interested.

The really sneaky financial part in this is if they get someone to stay on who was paying for this Fortnite sub and GPU to the new GPU price with Fortnite, they get to call all the revenue Game Pass revenue from now on. Just like they did when they made Xbox Gold become Game Pass Core (now Essentially). They can keep pointing to increased Game Pass revenue when we all know what's really going on.

Having to pay said fees so quickly is in itself a big embarrassment and would send negative messages to two very big software partners (Epic Games + Ubisoft). They're not gonna backtrack on this.

Microsoft wants to shed all the freeloaders and keep the whales who will happily pay $30 a month or $20 and buy new AAA games.

It's pure damage control.

he also has contacts within Xbox.
He deactivated his account now lol.

Whatever it was that made him lose it like this, it might be real news.

I know you're joking, but IMO the worst part of this rollout has been the big 3 execs sending out some low-level employee to deliver their bad news. Meanwhile they never spare a chance to be in the spotlight when good news are announced! They were all over the Xbox TGS show!

Very cowardly and the opposite what an exec should be made of at a company the size and stature of Microsoft.

Corporate idiots trying to turn this into the bloated Cable TV package Comcast kept pushing in the 2000s. Difference is they had a monopoly in most markets. Greed ruined a profitable business. Oh well.

I'm concerned for the extremely devoted Xbox fanboys.
What will they do when MS inevitably stops making consoles?

Mass suicide?
Extreme depression that will lead them to unemployment and becoming hobos giving handjobs behind McDonald's for pocket change?
Become Luna fanboys?

It's so worrying.

None of these business decisions make any sense. I bought a series x because I already had game pass since it was so cheap. I think they're doing this backwards. It's almost feels like intentional sabotage, either that or they know they can't sell any more hardware so they'll just make more money off the people that already own it smh.

It makes perfect sense if you're a public company looking for an excuse to exit a business that was previously making money. I think this is a slow rolled strategic corporate suicide for the Xbox brand, while letting them keep their publishing business and whatever they'll rename Xcloud to.

Their corporate parent requires them to show a profit on the books, and is no longer willing to let them spend on the corporate credit card. They actually have to turn a profit on their own from within. The hardware isn't selling, the software isn't selling, so their only way to try and bring in more money is to raise the price of services. They're just hoping enough subscribers will stick around to make the number on the spreadsheet go up.
