Xbox Series X and S Sales Have Collapsed in Europe

I would rather say they have too much content and as a result they are not piling subscription services like during the pandemic + they are influenced by the hardcore and what console to get from "people that know". So they ask their one gamer friend and they will say "Playstation". Also, even your grandma knows what "a playstation" is, as opposed to Xbox.

Maybe Xbox just isn't an interesting option for most people.

Microsoft definitely messed up somewhere. I really can't pin the exact reason though.

The Xbox Series X is a fucking great console by almost every measure.

Except for the fact there isn’t a single game that requires it.

And the games that are on it are often hamstrung by having to run on inferior hardware.

These two things make the Xbox Series X absolutely fucking pointless as a gaming choice.

Those are Xbox’s two problems. Nothing else matters.

Not every game is a GAAS or has DLC.

Most single-player games are just one-and-done. So a size-fit approach doesn't make sense. Unit sales or engagement numbers don't apply to all games. I guess that's why Xbox is a failure in sales as they do not understand the gaming market at all.

Disagree with this.

Engagement is most important metric there is.

Video game industry doesn't need existential crisis. Best way to ensure that is if people love playing games.

Making sales/money is obviously critically important as well. But it's second most important thing. First is to ensure people enjoy your games.

I mean the checklists don't seem to work.

1. Xbox has the best games

2. Xbox has the most powerful console

3. Xbox has the cheapest console

4. Xbox has the best controller

5. Xbox has gamepass

Some arguments I've seen used but not reflected in reality.

P.S cireza cireza is my best friend now.

Are you seriously debating no body is playing on PC and everyone is going PlayStation/Nintendo?

Just a cursory glance at Valve revenue shows it's similar size to Nintendo. And it doesn't sell hardware. Plus there are plethora of marketplaces, every publisher has one.

In any case I am happy with xbox I have a choice of PC / console. Am not a shareholder, just wanna play games they make.

A console like Series X will always struggle against a PC few years into generation when entry level gpus match it's performance.
"nobody"? No. I never said that.

I'm saying that more people buy PlayStation + Nintendo to play games than PC + Xbox (what you were claiming). And that is a fact that just cannot be denied.

There are 130 million Steam users + ~65 million Xbox users, so a total of 195 million users even if we ignore duplicates.

And there are ~130 million PlayStation users + ~130 million Nintendo users. A total of 260 million users.

How many are for gaming though?

Here is the latest Steam GPU survey: https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/videocard/

Out of 130 million users, we have a very small % of people who are playing modern AAA games on their PCs with their configuration. The rest are buying consoles, i.e., PlayStation.

I play on PC but rarely play the latest triple A games. If your definition of gamer is "buys AssCallofBaldurPunk" I'm not a gamer.

A quick look at the GPU survey shows easily over half have a GPU which plays modern games somewhere between adequately (Series S level) or very well. How do you conclude it's only a small percentage?

This it it for me. Great hardware, but why would I buy one? I can’t think of a single reason. I connect my PC to my TV and I have the same or better experience with the same games.

Anecdotal evidences.
And maybe i am the only person who knows people that game this way

Take my 34 year old son as a prime example of someone who makes really good money and does a lot of work at home oh his Mac but does not want a gaming PC and has an Xbox and Switch only

i know the numbers prove these people are a small number but 90% of his gaming is on Xbox

Who would have thought that not forcing people to buy you box to play your games would result in less boxes sold?
For sure. But I think theres more to it than just PC day one access, at least there is for me. I have no doubt a lot of people buy consoles for simplicity and love the faff free nature of it all. Even if PC's didn't have access to Redfall, Starfield and Forza etc. I still think the Xbox console would be struggling. I think the issues go beyond platform exclusivity, even though that is a factor.

Yep. I've built PC's for over 20 years and still do. Gamed on PC for a decade or so and had earlier computers like the Amiga etc... But I prefer gaming on console. 🤷‍♂️

We're comparing to PS5 levels, so > 2080 or 3060 levels.

Why compare to PS5 though? Most people are still playing at 1080p on PC for a start, and/or would turn down details to medium as applicable to get a decent framerate. I used the metric of who has an RTX 3050 or GTX 1660 which are both roughly equivalent to a Series S GPU.

Even by your measure though, the people with 3060 or better is still a lot higher than a 'very small percentage'.

Because the argument by vaibhavpisal vaibhavpisal , which he started, was that "more people buy PC + Xbox to play games than PlayStation + Nintendo." And we know that it's factually incorrect.

130M Steam users + ~65 million Xbox users = 195 million.

I definitely didn't say that. Although i don't see that gaming on PC means your gaming with Xbox. Like the console market the PC market has many different options for gaming.

Everything from different stores like Steam or GOG to gaming via emulators lime Dolphin or PCX2. Xbox doesn't necessarily see that on their end unless your buying software made by them or their store for example. PC is a lot more competitive with Xbox than you think.

From pure hardware perspective Xbox is amazing, whisper quiet, small and powerful machine.

But I had to sold it when I bought good GPU, there is no point when I can play all Xbox games on pc but (sometimes much) better.

Yup, sold my XSX yesterday, I was contemplating it for a while since I build my pc. Struggled to see why I was holding on to it. Sold it, traded in all the games I didn't already replaced on steam for steam gift cards, rebought every game I had on steam, got a thirth 2 TB ssd, and have some money left over in pocket.

I don't have anything against Microsoft anymore or less than any other mega Corp, but their Xbox division sucks and I don't have any interest in it anymore. I still have some OG Xbox and many 360 games and a 360 for when I feel nostalgic.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
Team Xbox are so completely out of touch it's sort of embarrassing.

They aren't exciting, they aren't enticing, they squander the advantages they have, poor decision after poor decision.... ad naseum.

To be more specific, lets ask a few questions:
  • Where is the AI integration? Microsoft are at the forefront of AI in business but that hasn't translated to gaming. Why? The Series devices feature hardware support for DirectML, where are the tech demos? Why aren't Microsoft championing and pushing the use of this technology in gaming? They have such an advantage in the space. Let us have conversations with NPCs in real-time. Show us smarter more dynamic NPC AI in games.
  • Games. Where is the quality? Where are the new IPs? Why has Xbox abandoned so many iconic IPs? Why does Xbox have such a poor selection of 1st party games? Why does Xbox not attempt to compete in the same space as Nintendo? What are so many of its development teams actually doing? Why do developers purchased by Microsoft fail at alarming rates?
  • Games. Why no console only exclusives or even timed exclusives? No wonder no-one is buying the console.
  • Technology. Why aren't they mandating the use of specific technologies in their 1st party games? i.e. VRS2, SFS, Mesh, DirectML etc. Why haven't they retrofit FSR into existing games? Why aren't they offering a solution like NVidia Remix? Why don't Microsoft adopt a few standard game engines that fully integrate Xbox technologies i.e. ForzaTech, ID Tech etc. Too many engines across its studios that don't support advanced Xbox features.
  • Technology. Why doesn't Xbox have a Windows mode so it can be used like a PC lite for kids to do homework on etc? Why doesn't Microsoft allow the console to be used as a media server via use of Plex or Emby. Sony managed it previously. Add value to the platform and make it a no-brainer. There are so many easy wins here you would have to be blind not to see them.
  • Services. Simultaneous release cross-platform of 1st party. Why? It should be deferred on PC by 3-6 months. Incentivise ownership of console and provide extra time to devs to ensure the PC version is bug free.
  • Services. Game Pass. Gamers need more transparency with upcoming titles. Where are the Game Pass exclusive only skins, unlockables or in-game currencies? Its all so very stale and uninteresting.
  • Physical media. Why the blackout and what are your plans? Will there be a new physical media? Why not usb-c with only licence to keep physical alive?
  • Digital media. Why can't I access my digital game licence keys? Why can't I trade or sell licences to a 3rd party via built in app? Why can't I loan friends my digital games? Why is digital the same or more expensive than physical?
I could go on forever. There are a million other things that could be done to radically improve the platform. Regardless, get over here Phil and answer these questions you pussy!!!
Microsoft seems to want to be seen as the cool person that is well liked, but not really taken seriously. They have their hands in too many areas and they have largely devalued their own console. I have mixed feelings on Day 1 PC and Xbox, but I can't say it doesn't have an impact. I took full advantage of Starfield on PC and would have hated playing it on Xbox at 30 fps.

The day they bought Bethesda, they should have immediately commissioned Fallout 3, New Vegas remasters that could go on Gamepass and sold on Playstation/Nintendo. They didn't have to be ultra fancy, just playable. That could have easily been accomplished in less than a year.
Have a smaller studio trying to get their feat wet make a Fallout New Vegas like spinoff. Those are some easy wins they could have put together. It's not what MS/Xbox does that frustrates people so much, it's just as much what they don't do.

One HUGE thing that would please me, would to start merging Battle.net and STeam/Xbox accounts. If I could trash the Battle.net launcher I'd be good

One conversation that MS has to start considering is if Day 1 AAA games are really a good idea for Gamepass, as I don't believe that is sustainable. Do what EA does and give the game a 6-12 month exclusive window being sold. Maybe give Gamepass subscribers a $10 discount.

I actually think Gamepass Core is a pretty good deal since it offers a $60 per year option. I think Xbox offering a $99 per year higher tier version isn't a bad idea either.

In the Netherlands, the original Xbox did somewhat okay, and the Xbox 360 put up a really good fight during the first half of that generation.

That momentum collapsed when they started focusing on the casual Wii crowd with Kinect, and then they completely lost us when they labeled us a Tier 2 country with the Xbox One launch. Now Xbox is pretty much gone from store shelves here, except specialized gamestores.

Europe is very varied though. Nintendo has always had a strong presence in France and Germany, with Germany also being very friendly to PC. Scandinavia has always been PlayStation first and foremost, etc etc. Each country/region has their own prefences.

This is correct.

OG Xbox was reasonably hyped for being a powerhouse. And ultimately it did okay, I think it was solid number 2 in front of Gamecube (GC was some sort of laughing stock, it had a very bad rep). 360 was actually very popular for a year and a half, because Sony was late and jumped the shark with the PS3 launch. I think Xbox started to lose traction when Sony released the Slim. From that moment on Sony regained its position and MS alienated the fans with Kinect. Kinect was a huge hit at launch but also seemed to be very frontloaded. It was quickly abandoned and thrown into the corner next to the dying Wii.

Xbox One was a joke. It was released a full year later and we all knew it was worse than the PS4 anyway. I don't think it ever made any significant dent. Almost no one wanted it.

I do think Xbox Series is being sold widely over here, like at MM and Coolblue etc. But demand is just not that high. Series X is currently offered for 400 (which is 150 difference to PS5) but doesn't seem to move much.

What about the Wii U and all the games that got remasters on the Switch? For me engagement is meaningless without correlation with the most important part, the sales. Because of those sales, the switch version of those Wii U games like Mario kart and Smash bros got a lot more "engagement". Same case for steam reviews, were you can class reviews by how long the person have played the game. But it is just a nice touch, not the most important info for me. Of course the game has to be good. But if you fail to convince people to even try it...

You should tell this to Phil Spencer and Co....

You need to make moar money, so as to be able to make moar games.

Your balance sheet must be a lie. It's showing profit and high revenue but surely it cannot be making any money since your consoles are not getting sold.

Also, sabotage steam and improve your own store with all features steam offers. There cannot be such a successful storefront on your platform that you don't directly profit from. Just like Apple/Google.

Xbox players are moving around. They will be there.

If Nintendo were releasing their games on PC in Wii U era, there wouldn't be a catastrophe.

Launching new console is always a gamble. You might not capture audience in same way. There might not be enough launch window titles like BOTW, SM Odyssey etc.

Nah I'm sure they know they need to make money from Xbox. They definitely are nor running a charity.

The decisions they made don't seem to have helped them when it comes to selling hardware and getting people more invested in their ecosystem.

That that as you will but stop with your retarded meltdowns.

If sales bother you so much then maybe you should stay away from sales threads if you don't believe in them.

That's probably my fault.

I get annoyed when people say that income doesn't matter for these companies. The truth is that all that matters to them in the end. Its why they produce these products in the first place.

Didn't seem to be anything crazy about the discussion until he started talking about Microsoft shutting down Steam and tightening control of Windows to stifle competition. That tidbit of insanity came out of nowhere. Tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but continuing to dodge makes me think that was a serious take.

Certainly don't think you need to apologize for anything.

I am so close to getting rid of my Xbox consoles as well since I have a nice gaming pc

The main reason I owned Xbox was because my son plays there and we would shut off cross play to avoid PCs and we would play some MP games together and living 1000 miles apart anytime we could group and chat I was all in

But lately his gaming has shifted more and more towards single player games so my Xbox doesn't even get used much anymore

Sold my XSX last year as the only thing I did with it was generate points with the Rewards app. Now that's going away and I can use the mobile Xbox app for the remaining Rewards stuff. Everything on the gaming side I care about is on my PC so just felt 100% redundant.

Next is how long will I keep my PS5. I've got Gamefly through July of next year so I imagine I'll keep it at least until that is used up. I can't imagine Sony will go through yet another year of not having a proper first party showcase, but that may be the final determination for me. As things are, most of my gaming time is on PC these days so it is what it is.

I still love having a console simply for MP shooters because the hacking isn't quite as bad but even my love for those games is dying because of cheats

Once I decide to totally move off games like COD and Hell Let Loose I may be totally console free gaming and just wait for PS games to hit PC

While I understand this sentiment primarily affects PC gamers, it’s clear that it really only affects Xbox in any meaningful way from what we can discerne. It does make it look like what seemed to be true is true, and a significant portion of the people who owned Xbox were PC gamers, which goes back to the early days of Xbox. With the rise of Steam and day 1 Xbox releases on PC, it seems like those PC gamers have little reason to invest on an Xbox. It doesn’t paint the whole picture though as Dual Sense is eating into Xbox Controllers market share on PC yoy.

Personally I don’t have a PC gaming machine and never will again. And an Xbox-PS5 combo provides a lot more value, with GP on one system and a growing digital library on the other. The money you would spend buying both systems this BF wouldn’t be enough to buy a 3080.
