People blame don mattrick for the downfall of xbox, but phil spencer introducing gamepass is what absolutely decimated it and ended xbox as we know it. Phil is legitimately one of the worst CEO's of all time in gaming.

It's absolutely baffling that they haven't already created some kind of gaming focused/specific windows OS already.

It would solve a lot of the overhead and general perfomance issues that have plagued windows/directX in recent years and it would have allowed them to put their own PC store along with gamepass front and center.

One of my buddies has only ever bought Xbox. He’s come over to my house and played plenty of PlayStation games, with his absolute favorite being FF7. I offered to give him my old PS4 so he could play Remake, but he didn’t want it and keeps complaining endlessly that games like Remake aren’t on the Xbox.

Full fat Linux is not very fatty, though. And valve (or anyone) gets to customize it for purpose as they like. This all depends on what these changes to the game mode windows would look like. If it's just a controller-launcher, sure. But if they want to de-bloat it and speed it up and add convenience features, I don't know why I'd ever switch out of that mode. Seems like back to square one and just asking for windows to be better in general.

They obviously have to do something, though. Can't very well ship a box that boots to a desktop.

Yeah, except this same thread is over on the purple site and the denial over there is EXCEEDINGLY strong. I'd always believed they had a very strong MS proponent(they actively cheerled the Acti Blizz merger and got "mortified" when the layoffs showed up as everyone tried to warn them)

What games have you previously released on XBOX?

I'm a 3D artist who have worked freelance for various studios through outsourcing companies. I have never released a game of my own which is what myself and a few guys are working on now. At the moment we just don't see the Xbox as a viable platform anymore and this is coming from guys who were fans of the Xbox. We have demoed our game to MS and we were assured certain things regarding issues we had. But we see they have lied to us so our game just won't go to their platform because we deem it will be a waste of money.

Interesting that we're back to the Xbox hybrid/PC expectation. Which I dont really understand from a strategic perspective, if its primary reason for existence is to retain existing customers. How do Xbox expect the Series S users to migrate to something costing $1k. So you'd think they'd have a cheaper option. Ok then what about the handheld. But the handheld is meant to be years away. So I guess its business as normal with MS - i.e I'm left scratching my head. You've got to give them 10 outta 10 for audacity. They expect customers with Xbox's recent track record of total uncertainty and lack of exclusives, to invest $1k with them?

At release I bought both PS5 and Xbox series X. I said I was going to keep both for 2 years as I had the $1 trick going for gamepass and after that I was going to decide on keeping one because of the yearly subscription. I ended up selling the xbox and I didn't lose any games as I never bought one for it.

I agree with you, but let’s consider the other side of the argument. You don’t need a Dell or an Alienware to play Microsoft games, and there are plenty of other PCs that can do the job. Microsoft is now looking at consoles as PCs, and their upcoming console/handheld will basically be a PC in a box. They own 100% of the PC market, so why limit their sales to just 25% when they could be aiming for 100%? We keep looking at things from the old market perspective, but the world and gaming have changed. I don’t blame them for trying to sell more games, and I wish Sony was more open to the idea as well.

The R&D is incredibly expensive and if you extrapolate how much further behind they've fallen this gen into the next, theres no way it be anything but a drain on profits.

Playstation on PC. Yeah after April 2025 GT7, Astro Bot, Demon’s Souls are the only 1st party PS5 titles not ported iirc.

Playstation on Xbox. Not happening.

Playstation on Switch/Switch 2. Not happening.

I assume that they see how things are going for Xbox, so I wouldn’t expect day 1 releases on PC either anytime soon.
