Xbox will no longer have permanent console exclusives going forward according to Jez Corden

bender

What time is it?
I use my son as an example often but when we talked about Xbox games coming to PS he couldn’t care less, he has a massive Xbox library and would never switch to PS so I would imagine a lot of hardcore Xbox people don’t care if games come to PS

There will always be a base of fans but expanding that audience becomes difficult, especially as more and more devices become "Xbox" (GamePass players).

His most recent comments specifically said "console".

“We’ll definitely do more consoles in the future, and other devices.”

I have no clue what the future holds, but believing a word that comes from Phil Spencer's mouth is extremely short sighted at this point.

He lies more than he tells the truth.

Xbox Series X Green (OG) 3TB Edition satisfies that statement (Don't worry kids, it has no Thomson drive in it as it has no optical drive at all).

It's like I said earlier in this thread, I don't believe anything said from Xbox executives or media. Only what they do. Because you are right, the two don't always match up.

Sounds like hyperbole. Microsoft typically supports their products long after death. Xbox 360 still functions online, you simply cannot buy games on it any longer since July 2024. But also, they've dictated that they are making more consoles, and from the way the OP's tweet reads, they will get first party launch exclusives, then bring them over to PS5. So no, your Xbox isn't and won't be a paperweight.
Yep, I have an XSX and use it mainly for BC games and some Xbone/XSX titles I have. Console doesn’t magically disappear.

It’s just I don’t normally buy any games on it anymore. Well, other than BC games on sale.

I guess Microsoft is gonna go same route as Saga and become publisher instead.

I don’t blame them, at this point they have no hope able compete with Sony and Nintendo.
Just to preface, this is not a response to you, just a post expanding on what you said.

This isn't a Sega situation - it's a return to form for Microsoft. They were always more comfortable being a large PC game publisher, but they were afraid of how much influence Sony was exerting with their consoles. So to continue to be the dominant platform, they needed to enter the living room box space, and that became Xbox. Microsoft at its core is a software company, and a platform company. Nadella knows this an is pushing services to ensure they are still the dominant player in this space. Look how quickly they'll adopt and then scale down or drop consumer devices entirely: Zune, Surface, and now Xbox (which was historically the most successful of these endeavors).

We have moved beyond home OS platforms and boxes, and so with Activision-Blizzard and Zenimax. They see Xbox and Windows similarly, and increasingly irrelevant. Take a look at the company's product segments from their public financial results:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/investor/segment-information

1. Productivity and Business Processes (Enterprise software and services, think Office 365, ERP, etc.)

2. Intelligent Cloud (Azure, Microsoft SaaS, GitHub, etc.)

3. More Personal Computing (Windows, Xbox, Bing)

Why would Microsoft care about what they see as a legacy business? It's clear the console market isn't going to drive the growth they're looking for, when they can sell games to anyone that has a PC, or PS5, or Switch 2, or Steam Deck, or iPhone. I don't see Xbox entirely going away, but it's pretty clear they don't care to compete meaningfully in the console space. Even their handheld is another way to enter a different segment, trying to get consumers into their Xbox software ecosystem. Their 10 year promise to keep Call of Duty on Playstation is complete non-factor when they can make so much more money licensing all of the games that fall under their umbrella as the largest video game publisher by selling them on whatever devices can run them. If anything you want more people using other devices buying and playing your game! But you can make it a better deal, and drive more business by making your platform more appealing, and we have seen they're already doing this by including BO6 with Game Pass.

This isn't Microsoft giving up or giving it, it's them setting the stage for domination. They are playing a completely different game than Nintendo and Sony.

Nor should it at this point. Indiana Jones should not have had a staggered release.
Yep, that completely kills the hype. By the time it comes out on PS5 all the marketing is forgotten and it will have to compete with even more titles for attention.

Unless you are Rockstar staggered releases always harm sales, IMO.

Almost as many times as I have heard people here say Xbox was dead

On life support maybe but not dead yet
as far as i now, you don't fuck a brand by only making one mistake.

The current Xbox situation is the result of 10+ years full of mistakes / ill-advised Master Plans for World Domination.

trying to frame it as: "This has been the plan all along" is Jez Corden leves of spin.

"On life support maybe but not dead yet"
You just said it. It is being artificially kept alive.... has been dead for a while now.

If you are implying I am attempting Jez levels of spin when I have brought it up literally for years here going back to before Infinites launch I teased it was coming to PlayStation I dont know what to tell ya

Oh and another thing helping keep Xbox artificially alive are the PS ponies that are cheering its demise while buying the PS ports like Sea of Thieves

Between a hybrid PC or a hybrid handheld, I'll take a hybrid PC solution any day. I need something to replace my 1060 laptop and if it's something that does all native Xbox content, including BC, that's all the better.
Same. Can't wait for some real infos. A nice, powerful box to put under the tv that plays all my Xbox games and maybe let's us play our steam games too.

Well, that explains Phil's emotionless expression at the game awards.

Dude looked like he had mentally checked-out of everything.

At first I thought this meant like moneyhat deals and I was trying to think when the last one was. Maybe Titanfall or DR3?

First party? This was already known. Xbox gamers don’t care about exclusivity. We leave that to the Freegunners.

Most real gamers don’t care about exclusivity as long as you can play it where you want

The ones who do rush here to console war and likely dont game to begin with

Think I’d check out too if I’d fucked an entire brand with an endless parade of bad decisions.

I’m sure the vast pay cheques he gets will be of some compensation.

What do you actually mean by xbox is dead to you, or in general?

I know this is the dream for so many Sony fans but there's no way "xbox" goes away. Or should I say microsofts investment into gaming.

Do you feel micorosft are just going to walk away from gaming?

It confuses me.

And then, while secretly knowing all this, he sees PlayStation win game of the year with a cutesy robot game. Rough year for the dude haha

I think that the boiled frog strategy is coming to its end, Indiana Jones was a turning point into its acceptance, they're now preparing to release pretty much everything day one on PS5.

Microsoft is not making this move because the console market isn't going to drive growth. It wasn't driving enough growth for Microsoft because of the decisions they made. Sony and Nintendo are doing fine in the console market. You can bet MS would be happy to remain focused on console growth if they had succeeded in dominating the market.

They are not going to dominate the PC/portable and phone space either if they continue with mixed messaging and actions. They have competition in those markets too. If anything, I feel they are late to the party and in a weaker position to do that now. Steam and ASUS are not going anywhere and if Steam OS takes off good luck to MS making Game Pass/Xbox be the dominate "platform" on PC gaming.

Does that mean Microsoft Gaming is a failure? Absolutely not. I do believe they are weakening the Xbox brand with the current marketing campaign by making "everything an Xbox" but the Xbox brand is still highly recognizable and associated with highly regarded games. If they focus on game output and quality, I believe everything else will fall into place. If they continue to chase trying to dominate the market, they will get the same results.

🤨.... Ok?

Does this mean only new games going forward, or their back catalogue as well?
I'd love their JRPGS on Sony and Nintendo consoles

Infinite Undiscovery
Blue Dragon
Fable trilogy
Magna Carta 2
the 360 version of Phantasy Star Universe because that one looked and ran better than the ps2 version
Lost Odyssey

I can't remember the name of it, but there was an action rpg similar to fable on that platform. A brown-haired girl wakes up to find her village on fire and has to escape it. I wish I could remember what it was called. She had to flee in the dead of night wearing only her shift. maybe someone here who is smarter than I am can let me know what it was based on that really vague description. There was also another game with a goth girl similar to Bayonetta whose name currently escapes me as well. Bullet something... I think.

EDIT: the first one is Venetica, the second one was Bullet Witch.

I guess that’s the direction they’ve been heading, but now that I see it spelled out I have to wonder why you’d bother paying for xbox hardware. They’re essentially becoming just a publisher

Interesting that we're back to the Xbox hybrid/PC expectation. Which I dont really understand from a strategic perspective, if its primary reason for existence is to retain existing customers. How do Xbox expect the Series S users to migrate to something costing $1k. So you'd think they'd have a cheaper option. Ok then what about the handheld. But the handheld is meant to be years away. So I guess its business as normal with MS - i.e I'm left scratching my head. You've got to give them 10 outta 10 for audacity. They expect customers with Xbox's recent track record of total uncertainty and lack of exclusives, to invest $1k with them?

This ad is basically stating Xbox exists outside of the traditional console, so when the first and last options are gone you will still have the other ones available.

Right now, sure, and why would he? He would lose all of his games but a lot of people like your son may switch to PS6 and keep their old Xbox for games they bought if they feel like support won't be there and at this point 3rd party support might be second guessing their future Xbox plans.

PC is where they are going to attempt to transition their remaining console users to.
I've been saying this for a while now.

Just look at the Game Pass pricing since the increase.
d2167ef9cfe84f95ff34ec3aaf2ce5f5bd52_1920xt1080.jpg

It's was obvious (to me) the second this happened.

Just look at that chart!

PC Game Pass getting Day 1 releases and for less money than Game Pass Standard (that doesn't get titles for up to a year or longer) on Xbox is pretty fucking telling if you ask me.

And honestly I don't them being competitive in the PC space either. Steam has more mindshare in PC gaming than Playstation does in console gaming.

Microsoft is really not doing themselves any favors by not only not sharing their long-term plans, but also apparently changing their story once every few months. I would be pretty scared if I had a big library of Xbox only games, not knowing what will happen to it in the future and is it worth it to keep buying new ones.
