XCOM 2 |OT| Be Aggressive! Be Be Aggressive!

When do you unlock the attitude options? Kinda pissed that the ten or so characters I created and gave backstories/personalities, are having then be contradicted by their attitudes. For example the guy who's wife and children who were murdered in front of him is always smiling like an idiot.

It's in the customization options by default I thought

Oh damn. I'm researching magnetic weapons.. should I / could I have researched an armor upgrade first?

Can you equip upgraded armor on rookies? Man, I have so many questions about this game.

Mag weapons and advanced armor are both necessary, no need to turn course now. I guess armor could be slightly more useful early because you only need the research and to purchase one unit, with the guns you'll need a separate research for the sniper/cannon weapons and you'll need to buy one of each type of gun. But you'll want both before long so no need to worry about which one is first if you're already headed down one path.

What is it sitting at now?

Mine has been consistently about 2 pips from completion. I kind of like it as it keeps me focused on entering new territory and expanding communication. And hitting Black Sites, which is always fun.

Mine is also 2 away from completion. At the rate it is going I just don't know if I'll have time to get to the facilities. Every time I wait on a new territory it jumps up or a mission I can't ignore comes up.

Don't forget BLAZING PINIONS! where they fly up 700 feet into the sky and become unhittable.

The bane of my existence. Not only do I have to run away and find new cover, but the jerk basically gets a free hit when he comes back down. And it's always at the worst possible time when my squad is just barely hanging in there.

The first time I saw that move I stupidly thought that the four blazing points of light were the only part that would be attacked.

Cue him collapsing half the roof my guys were standing out, mangling 4 of my guys and coming in for a followup slash

Luckily even once it is full you still have a decent amount of time to hit a Blacksite.

Just don't mess that mission up or its all downhill from there.

welp, just learned that mechs have a grenade launcher too.

Had three guys stacked up on the door on the blacksite facility. A total loss with some of my most seasoned soldiers.

Things are looking grim

a bajillion hours into my playthrough and I just now am looking at continent bonuses. What the hell, I could've had an extra weapon upgrade slot! Not that I had any time to go around building relays until now.

Also does building relays stop retaliation missions or anything like that?

Waiting to establish contact with a new region and the damn Avatar meter jumps up yet another notch. That is 3 in less than 10 minutes. What the hell, man. I am beyond fucked.

My Avatar meter is over halfway now - I have no idea if I'm fucked or not - I'm about to take on a facility mission so I hope that helps. Had to focus solely on intel so I could make contact with two countries so I had access to the facility.

I think I made a few mistakes with how I made my base early on, we'll see if I can recover.

Also is there anyway to have character be promoted into a particular class or is it just random?

Once they are given a Nickname and hit Sergeant, that can be changed.

welp I guess I waited too long and now the avatar project is in the final countdown. I scrambled to be able to do a base assault mission had to skip 2 others, council didnt like that) and it barely moved the bar, only 1 tick wtf. this feels fubar

Blazing Pinions was singularly responsible for turning a VIP extraction from letter perfect execution to immediate disaster. I had 3 team members, including 2 snipers, on a tall building covering 2 Rangers going in to take the VIP from a vehicle. Archon pops on top of everyone over the building and sets up Blazing Pinions. I'd never seen it before and (mistakenly) though that it would go away if I took down the Archon. So he goes down and I resume the mission, not moving anyone on the roof.

Next turn it detonates, the floor collapses and everyone falls, killing one team member and heavily wounding the other two.

To make matters worse my designated extraction zone was on that roof too.

Still made it out with just the one casualty but it was intense.

I haven't personally experienced that but I've read that you can still recover from that. It's not all lost.

Armor is definitely important (extra inventory slot etc) but guns are far more useful. Things can't kill you if they're dead first. Being able to reliably one shot sectoids is a huge gamechanger early on, basically puts them in their rightful place as the least threatening enemy in the game. The accuracy bump is nice too.

Well this game is lost.

Next mission I had one turn, moved most of my guys into position. Last movement triggered a group who promplty got their "free move" to flank everyone. Then they got their turn and promptly killed 3 troops and sent everyone into panic.

game was game
they really should have found a way to balance the game without keeping the same free move mechanic

1) Avatar progress just went up by 3 -> the 'normal' increase, then a new facility opened in North America, and then a facility in Australia pushed it forward. This is all post skulljack/Black Site. It now sits at 1 before max, and I may be farked.

2) I am farked. I was about to assault a facility in West Africa when a retaliation mission popped up. I went to deal with that, but got a fatal error/CTD during the loading process. Reading others have run into this and it sounds like it is a hard error that reloads won't avoid.

XCOM2 is an incredible game, however I think I'm going to shelve it until the more serious performance bugs get ironed out. Hopefully Firaxis has something in the works.

Your last move shouldn't be one that potentially uncovers new territory.

Granted, there are some random bullshit situations with LoS.

I've been riding one or two pips from the end for my entire run. It doesn't seem to change anything, I just let enough black sites accumulate so I can go take care of it when necessary. Maybe it'll bite me later but if the Avatar counter is the end-game, it's going to be there forever and I'd rather feel the pressure after I have accumulated the tools needed to take them on.

Avatar went up another notch. I still don't have access to the regions that have facilities. I think I just got bad luck with the facility spawns being as far away from me as possible. It's pretty lame that I'm going to lose over something I really have no control over. This Avatar nonsense can go fuck itself. Probably going to just start over.

Avatar isn't something to worry about that much. I didn't knock it down a single peg until full. With story missions and alien facilities it's now back down to just 3 pegs.

I ignored the Avatar meter and just focused on upgrading my guys until the countdown began.

I barely managed to get enough intel and supplies to make contact with a country that had a blacksite to make it go back down

This was pretty much the only way to get screwed over in the last game so it's something I'm very careful about. Feels like every time I don't respect it, I trigger something horrible.

Phantom rangers are INCREDIBLY useful as spotters. Combine this with the sniper's Kill Zone ability and you can turn the 'free move' into a death sentence for them. The only things keeping this from being 100% effective are line of sight weirdness and turn limits.

Here's something I don't understand, how can a Specialist with 90 hacking score not hack an Advent Mech with 80 hacking score and 37% chance to take it over? I mean, it seems like it should be doable, but I've reloaded several times and can't get it to go.

The RNG might already be determined. You're supposed to see a 37% and say 'nooope', not 'I'll just reload until it works'.

37% isn't a very good chance. Also if it works like Enemy Unknown, reloading and attempting the same action immediately will never lead to a different result. The random seed for your action is set with the save if they didn't keep the "Save Scum" second wave option as default in this game.

Game's probably still using some variation of a seed roll or whatever it is called. Do someone elses turn first before executing the hack, or move to a different square. anything, really.

i've done a bit of save scumming (i prefer to call it trial and error since i'm still getting used to the mechanics) and from my experience the actions can be different. in one game i had a fast hands sharpshooter hit an enemy in half cover with a 53% chance to hit, and on reload miss two 53% chances from the same spot on the same enemy.

It can be the same action but if it isn't done immediately after the reload the outcome can change. The way EU worked was if you saved it on a turn and took the same action immediately on loading, that action would always yield the same result even if it was an 18% hit or a 95% miss. If you took an action with another soldier first though, the outcome could be different.

oh shit this second facility sabotage dropped the bar by 3 ticks, thats better!

also I cant believe my grenadier didnt die from being ganged up by 4 guys. 2 of them missed lol.

i see. i'm pretty sure i did the exact same actions with the other soldier but i guess that can affect the outcome too.

Anyone playing the with the 3 mods by the Long War folks? Are they worth it? Impressions?
The Leader skills are good as it affects the whole squad. Takes a while to learn and they can't go on missions whilst learning them.
Not used the SMG's but seem fine.
The Muton Centurion can be a real git with lots of health, but doable.
So yeah, the mods are fine. The Leader one inparticular.

So does the game assign a hit value you need to reach to actually hit an enemy before the start of a turn? I'm messing around with this one fight and nothing will his the unit upto 93% chance to hit.

Phantom ranger save me from doing at least one horrible move that will end in tragedy per mission. Just the general ability to not be surprised by pods is possibly what is making this commander ironman run go so smoothly.

that puzzling face
Went on a downed UFO mission for old time's sake, things goes south, Major Grenadier panics, runs off into the fog of war, and fires at an unactivated 2-man Codex-Shieldbearer pod, 1-shotting the Codex with a crit.

That's XCOM ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Do you mean reloading and taking the shot over and over? The save games deliberately save the position in the random number generator to prevent what you're doing. In fact savescumming (real RNG) is a Second Wave option.

Thanks for the suggestion. Doesn't seem to have helped though sadly.

Oh well, guess I'll just have to blow the thing up instead of taking it over. Pity really, it could've done some massive damage to that pack of Mutons that's just round the corner.

Beat the game on the default difficulty.
Actually found it kind of short/easy towards the end.

Game starts off super hard. But once you get the tech, game becomes pretty easy.

Also i felt that the "story missions" weren't as good as the last game.

Still great.
Gonna try an ironman run, as I have never done that before. and had i done it the first time, it would have been a complete disaster over and over again.

Someone will make a "save scum" second wave option at some point. Speaking of, what's with the lack of second wave options? Are they unlockable, or were they removed completely?

Speaking of which, do we know if there are Second Wave options in XCOM 2? I really miss Not Created Equally/Hidden Potential.
