Yes you can move however you want. Even escape. If you're locked on an enemy the camera keeps it in view, so maybe that made it look stiff to you.

There are multiple levels of cutscenes in the original xenoblade. Its probably the same here.

Leve 1: El cheapo
These cutscenes are little more than flapping mouth animations and stiff turning.

Level 2: Slightly better:
Eyes move, heads turn, some facial expressions try to be made.

Level 3: Holy shit.

Oh I had no idea they weren't uniform quality. Well guess that explains it then. Kinda sucks they have to do the the "el cheapo" level cutscenes though. I'd imagine that's due to budget/time constraints of some kind.

This looks even better than I expected in real gameplay.

The music and environments just fit together so well. It's nice to see day/night versions of the tracks too.

I'm not one to usually like exploration in JRPGs too, because most of them tend to be huge soulless worlds devoid of any interest and too many invisible walls and limits, but this just looks really fantastic and avoids all of those poor decisions in other titles.

I always set my sound effect balances much lower in order to hear the music in any game.

It was one of my biggest complaints with Persona 4.

I don't get why the battle music has lyrics at all. Especially for the English release it will be distracting hearing English/Engrish lyrics while hearing the Soul Voice cries from your party members and general battle chatter.
