Xenogears/Xenosaga games - worth it?

Gears was cool when it was released but the graphics now are really crappy and if you dont like games with insanely high random encounter rates anymore (I don't) then stay away from xenogears.

I notice that many Japanese developers seem to have a distorted view of western religions like Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. I don't think they "get" gnosticism either. Their use of symbolism and dialog belies their misunderstanding.

I doubt many of them really care whether they "get" it or not; western iconography in Japanese games is used mostly in the same spirit as Greek mythology, etc. in D&D and lots of fantasy stories/RPGs. Most Japanese don't take religion terribly seriously anymore, so even living religions are fair game.

Seems to give less weight because it is so often thrown around..

So what other game soundtracks have I said that about, exactly?

Chrono Cross I hope. Because that's also in my top 5 favorite soundtracks ever.

Zeo should take his droopy ass face and just march back into the closet where he came.

He looks like that movie with Cher, Mask.

Yeah, Honeybee Manor is the shining archetype of video game orchestration.

I like when people, when trying to make a point that something is bad, look for something below average in a pile of greatness, then uses that to make their point. :P

What pile of greatness? Honybee Manor is the best thing on the FFVII soundtrack.

All these years? I came back in February of this year, after posting for like 5 months in 2001 (whenever DQ7 came out in Japan and Chrono Cross came out in the US, and when ohpa got to 10,000 posts).
O rly?
You write FAQ's right?
Maybe that's what I meant.

LOVED Xenogears. FFVII and XG were what got me back into gaming after taking a few years off in high school / college.

Didn't try Xenosaga for fear of it sodomizing my love for the original Xenogears.

Let me guess Zeo - FFVII was your first Final Fantasy / Uematsu composition you heard, right?

Because his work for FFVII I thought was, overall, mediocre, with some good pieces (i.e. J-E-N-O-V-A, One-Winged Angel, Aerith's Theme, Still More Fighting, and...that's about it.)

I mean, when even the Prelude manages to sound irritating, then something's wrong.

FFVII soundtrack = weak.
Everything else FF music related = greatness.

xenogears' problem was that it was too ambitious for one game. imagine if george lucas crammed all of star wars into one 3-4 hr movie .... that's how i felt about it. it just came across as muddled. it had alot of other problems but i haven't played it in over 5 years so i can't really remember the problems i had with it exactly ... i wouldnt recommend playing it unless you have alot of time on your hands.

I haven't read any of the posts in this thread and I will never check it again because I don't want to become entangled in this.

I'll just say that Xenogears was one of the best gaming experiences of my life and Xenosaga ep1 was excellent as a potential start to another epic. But then XSep2 was horrid and the series is dead to me.

Would I recommend either to you? Well, since I don't know you personally I'd say no because most people hate these games. I recommend them on a personal level to friends who I think will enjoy them greatly, but that is all.

I'm guessing this thread is filled with lots of negative energy, but yeah I'm out.

Figures... Bebpo enjoys obscure games (like Killer 7). Not even gonna give Xenosaga DS a try? What a shame.

:lol

Xenogears-- fuck yes. Loved it and found it far more entertaining than FF7. Don't know how it'd do on a retry, but I loved it. The only RPG storyline that I felt was truly 'epic'. I would think about the game and all these different stories and shit and then realize they all came from the same game.

Xenosaga-- ugh. couldn't even get through the first one I was so bored. just keep ziggy and chaos in your party and you win.
