One thing I don't understand is the naming conventions, I thought that in general in Japan you would put the last name first and that makes sense everyone calls Kiryu, Kiryu, but on past cards he refers to himself as Kazzy and before I played the game I would have thought that was his name. Some other characters it seems don't follow this convention Daisuke Kuze for insistence, I've heard Daisuke as first name plenty of times and everyone calls him Kuze and it's hard to believe that everyone is on a first name basis with the muscle of the Dojima family
It annoys me because if my name is Dave Smith and I go to Japan my name doesn't become Smith Dave lol. But for some reason we reverse Japanese names when we refer to them in the West.
Anyway his name is Kiryu Kazuma, Kiryu being his family name. I think Kazzy is also a localisation thing. Not sure about Kuze but I guess his actual name is Kuze Daisuke.

So his name is kazuma? I thought that before I played the game but everyone called him kiryu! Then I heard them talking about kazasan and thought maybe because he was adopted he had his family name. All this is very confusing

Also when do you get to switch protagonist when ever you want. I farmed Mr. Shakedown with majima and want to give Kiryu some money for the real estate

Names are used differently in East Asia. I think even his close friends would call him Kiryu-chan or some other pet name. Nobody is referred to by just their given name as we do in the west.

His given name is Kazuma, his family name is Kiryu. Everyone calls him Kiryu because this is a game about ultra-manly gangsters and nobody calls eachother by their given name in that world
lol i think every page has some version of this exchange. it's a dumb item.
Regardless, you're not wrong, Majima > Kiryu when it comes to fighting styles, easy.
in the post-game now, trying to finish the real estate stuff. It's really dull, and super expensive at the end. Just having the game running in the background and checking in every few minutes to reinvest is not exactly my idea of a fun minigame. I really liked Majima's hostess club tho.
Just finished the main story. 29 hours, 55 minutes with about 26 % completion. I explored quite a bit in the first 2/3 of the game but felt like the story drove me forward in the last act which I didn't mind at all.
Some general thoughts on the game, story and characters as a first time Yakuza player...
Game: It feels like a labour of love. The details, the writing, the characters, the subquests and humour all tie in together so well... and there's so much of it!
Story: Probably the best story I've played this gen, are all of the stories this good? I imagine this was an even bigger treat for long-time Yakuza fans but as someone who didn't know any characters going in besides Kiryu, it really delivered for me. Plenty of turns, great writing and excellent VA. It's sold me on Kiwami already.
Kiryu: Very cool customer - I liked how the game made fun of him whilst equally developing this badass persona behind him.
Nishitani: An absolute bro
who I did think might flake on me at certain times but towards the end realised that would've never been the case.
Reina: Unique character design wasted?
Is she an important character later in the series? It felt like she was going to be implemented further and then never really was.
Majima:
I feel like Majima was the more likeable character in the end. Maybe because he was driven by love, which is more relatable than revenge. Either way, both protags do a superb job of pushing the story forward and giving you a reason in each fight to think "I'm going to fuck these guys up!"
Awano: Most punchable face I've ever seen.
Kuze:
Guy doesn't quit, gets his ass handed to him multiple times and somehow doesn't get the sack.
Shibusawa:
It was quite obvious he was going to come out on top of the three lieutenants from the start but they really turn up the baddy factor in the last act.
Kashiwagi:
Ehhhh, I didn't really get him. I understand he's respected but he flinched pretty bad when it came to the crunch - when he arrived in the trucks at the end, I wasn't sure what side he was on.
Sagawa:
Douchebag! I hated him throughout. Somehow they made him friendly/redeemable in the last scene before he's killed but damn, I wish Majima had just beat the shit out of him once. Is this dude meant to be likeable, I don't know.
Tachibana:
I'm glad he remained honourable to the end. I wasn't sure if he was meant to be aware from the very beginning that his own grandfather had own the Empty Lot? Anyway, he was always interesting to have around as he exuded mystery quite a bit and you never knew where a story beat with him would go.
Oda:
Yeesh, Oda. Why'd you have to do it? I'm guessing from what you're told from right at the end that Oda was a traitor through and through? His reveal as one of the nasty men is great after they throw you off the scent with Tachibana earlier in the story.
Ending:
Felt like the most fan-servicey part with the two protagonists making their aesthetic transformations in to their Yakuza 1 counter-parts. But a reasonably nice epilogue/bow.
Overall: Incredible game through and through. Great cast of characters, lovingly detailed world, loads of fun, meaningful side-mission stuff to do.
Thanks to all the Yakuza experts as well who have answered my questions in the thread.

Yes, Majima is a lot of fun to play as and he is a pretty awesome character too. I am damn mesmerised by this game and have been playing non-stop for 15 hours now. Yay Sunday!
So I spent like an hour last night trying to fish the south side of the river (right next to Majima's apartment) for a turtle. I'm using the rod from the pawn shop, and the premium bait from the store in the northeast of the map. Anything I'm missing? What type of shape is the turtle?
Damn, maybe my favorite in the series. I cannot WAIT for Kiwami. Great story, not too over the top, and it might be the most violent game in the series. Beyond that, I think the extra depth added to the characters from part one in this one is pretty much amazing.
Still need to
beat the Amons. Fuck them.
So does stuff you do in Premium Adventure mode carry over to your clear save so you can transfer it to a Legendary play through?
And Yakuza? How is it you have the best final boss music in every game in your series? I mean come on: this is amazing. Not only in the composition but how it ebbs and flows with the fight itself. It's so damned good.
And:
all those last fights were great. Every damned one. So satisfying. Taking out Lao Gui was satisfying, though I really thought it would have been Kazzy who fought him. I was also surprised that there was only one Awano fight, and Kiryu never fought him. Especially since you fight Kuza what like 4 times?

Steel Business Card may just be the best weapon in the game. It's heat action costs only 1 bar, takes only 1 hit of damage AND heals you, it has attack power of 210 and durability of 30 hits, it's heat action is easy to execute and you automatically unequip it after doing it, and since it's just a small business card it doesn't even drop your movement speed. And to top it all off, it's comparatively cheap to repair.
It's only issue is that the only way to get it is by a random drop from 1 000 000 Dream Machines, but I would still suggest everyone to get it. It's god-tier item.

I guess that makes sense... So nishki s given name is Akira? And majima is actually goro ?🤔🤔🤔
Well know the judgement kazzy makes more sense

Basically all characters in this game are referred to by their family names.
This is why the interactions with the Pocket Circut Fighter are funny, because he's a grown man calling a bad dude by his given name+kun. By calling him Kazuma-kun, Kiryu is basically being treated like a school child, and that is part of the joke.
Once you have the bear hug for beast style with Kiryu unlocked you can farm Mr.Shakedown for billions upon billions of yen. Since only Kiryu gets the extra money from the CP perk, he is the guy you want to farm with.
Majima is in desperate need of a power boost but i keep on spending it on the clubs since i know i can eventually get the billions from Kiryu. Need to progress the story a bit further for that, but holy shit at the reveal in chapter 10. What is going to happen next?
Apparently majima isn't a playable character in the other games, that's disappointing. I like kyriu as a character but majima is so much more fun to play as.

Now you understand my comments as to why I wish I could just send money to kyriu from majima from the start. Because I could just buy all of his upgrades and play a mini game that's actually fun. When I started the cabaret club I didn't stop playing it until I was done. It took me the whole week here and there to do so. It's incredible and worthy of mentioned how much they nailed that mini game
Steamrolled the third Star of the hostess business, the previous 2 were close but this one had no chance. This minigame trounces the other one. The platinum girls all have their interesting backstory too.

So, the card system in this game is essentially a pornography recommendation service, right? Did the developer have to secure the rights for each of these JAV actresses to use their real names/likenesses? I love Japanese video games.

I think so and I find it very cool (for very selfish reasons)! Supposedly Yakuza has been doing this for a while. I wonder who else cameos in the other games when I get around to some of them.

Lol basically. Also they voice themselves in the game as you see them in a lot of sidequests. Heck, even the older games had AV/Gravure models as well.

He wasn't a main character. Heck, he wasn't even a main villain. He got so popular that his role continuously got bigger till he finally got that Deuteragonist role. He's the definition of a breakout character.
Fwiw - he's playable in Dead Souls, which I feel gets a bad rep.
It's tied to one of the real estate districts, I can't remember if it's the 2nd or 3rd but you have to advance your shares. If you stick with doing the real estate you should get it. When you go back to the bowling alley you'll be able to advance it from there.
