Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

The reception to this game seems overwhelmingly positive, both reviews and comments on gaf. Glad to see as a long time Yakuza fan.

Quoting some impressions for anybody who might be interested. I know i need them compiled to show them to my dark souls / destiny / final fantasy friends. They need to know the truth!

I started this last night and I must say - I am very very impressed.
It's classic Yakuza but it's easily the best looking one. Can't wait to play more.

This is my first Yakuza game, i'm in love already after that first karaoke bit where Kiryu imagines himself performing as a rock band.
Shortly after that I was able to fight hooligans and learn rush combos from a drunk. Where has this series been all my life.

This game is addictive. Very interesting story (hey Mafia 3, this is how you write a 'Mafia' story) and very cool minigames which are actually really fun to play and not easy at all. I love it.

So after finishing the first chapter I think Im kinda in love with this game and its really just starting. I hope my love continues!
edit: I also really like the fake business card they gave you in the holder. :lol

I chose... wisely!
First Yakuza game and I'm loving it! Very Shenmue!

Played a bit after the beginning of chapter 2, this game is really great so far. First Yakuza game. I am just getting into the side activities, they are really weird and fun. Also I suck a Karaoke.

Chapter 1 done.
This game.
This God damn game.
Lives up to expectations already, and I'm nowhere near the absurd bits. I need that kick out of the window in gif form.

Hoooooly ****
As stated before, this is my first Yakuza.
Only reached Chapter 2 right now. So far, this game is awesome!
Love the setting too! First boss gave me some trouble but the combat system is a lot of fun!

Ok, just finnished my first 9 hours in a Yakuza game ever.
Impressions -
Wow. What a blast.
What a well developed great fucking title. Kicking myself for having ignored this series in the past. Bravo Sega

Holy shit at that boss fight at the end of chapter one. I'm actually glad that I played this on hard cause it made that fight much more intense and fun.
And oh God, that music. It's drilled in my head. Soooooooooo good.
Wow, I'm 23 hours in and only on chapter 8, this is a HUGE game. Granted, I spent a lot of time doing side missions and entertainment. Absolutely loving this, and loving that I have more game left. Surprisingly emotional scenes too that were unexpected. It's rare to see this quality of story in video games very much.
Here's hoping this game is a huge success for Sega in the west!

I've never played a Yakuza game before, but I don't know about "new style", but to my eyes and ears, there seems to be three styles.

1) Fully cinematic "main" scenes

2) Voiced scenes with lip sync and gameplay graphics for "normal" scenes

3) Voiced scenes without lip sync, but thoughtful mouth movements and expressions for more subtle, thoughtful scenes, not directly inner monologues, but deliberately subtle..

Ok, I always consider "clickety-clack", no VA, regular gameplay graphics as a separate style as well. Especially because my first Yakuza was 4, where they switched between VA and no-VA constantly, throwing in some cutscenes whenever they felt like it.

Is there a guide to doing all the side content? I'm almost sad that we didn't get ?'s because I don't want to miss these. It's on witcher 3 level of writing. Great characters, great stories. This is basically another game that does side quests correctly and it's now one of only two this generation to do so.

Wait, there are no markers for side quests anymore? That sucks, it was nice to play Yakuza 5 without a guide, like I had to do for 3 and 4.

not my favorite story hook BUT such a huge improvement over 5 in terms of pacing that doesn't matter, the story so far is moving along at a very comfortable pace.

rush stance is sooooo fucking fun. cancelling attacks with dodges and dodges with dodges and oh man this is FUN. playing in hard mode I got my ass beat by the first boss but eventually figured out how to overwhelm him with rush.

really good start.

Maybe I didn't hit a side quest then lol. I just know stifling said a lot of markers are not actually on the map

I haven't played a game in the past decade that didn't make it clear how saves work...

Either having manual saves that you can do yourself from the menu or telling you the game auto saves, etc.

I am just a little upset (but way over now since I'm caught up) that I lost over 2 hours cause of this.

I feel you, man.

I almost turned off my PS4 assuming the game autosaves, but I asked here to make sure and that's what saves me :/

It shouldn't be too much of a hassle if someone exits before the first save point though, all or at least most of the cutscenes are skippable from the pause menu (press option button, as usual) and the battles were just tutorials.
The cards are just collectibles, they should be in your inventory on one of the tabs, you get a collectible book that they are stored in.
IIRC it's called Granhara something. The description on the map says you can watch erotic videos .
I can't remember the name of the place, it's on the east side of the map.
The phone card catalogue is in the third inventory tab. Press R1 in your inventory until you get there. There's three cards of each girl: Type A, Type B and Type C. When you complete a set, there's a sleazy guy in an alleyway on the eastern side of the map you can show them to and he'll give you 5 million yen per set.

Most of the cards are in the overworld, but there's a bunch in different buildings as well. That big dude next to the shrine gives you a card detector that beeps when you get near one, which will make it significantly easier to find them.

Ah, I definitely tried to enter the place before getting the card, but the game won't allow it.

Thanks for the tips, looks like collecting the card will be my side mission priority. I'll do it for the trophy ;)

As for spotting the guy who steals your money I found him pretty obvious with the $$$$$ over his head. You can also buy and item thats helps out in those situations in the pawn shop.
Look at the mini map. The controller should vibrate if he is within your vicinity.
You'll he's spotted you because a red arrow will appear which indicates he is nearby you.

Also go to a video shop/parlor, press Touch Pad then Triangle I think and you'll see a list of available shops. Go to the video shop to know what those pictures are for.

Great then, he definitely made me more cautious when exploring lol.

On the other hand, I didn't know you can expand the minimap by pressing the Touchpad.. Thanks!

I like playing games on Easy. Is that a bad idea for this game?

Nah, I don't see why it would be. I've been playing on easy cause I'm having a really hard time getting a hang of the battle controls and it's been nice. You still have to actually play the game, it's not like everything goes down in one hit. Difficulty only affects the battles, too.

You can change the difficulty whenever you want, too.

I like playing story-heavy games on Easy. Is that a bad idea for this game?

This game (and series in general) really offers no challenge in easy or medium I feel. I'd recommend starting you off with hard but I believe the game will offer to switch to normal mode if you die a couple of time in the same segment.

Cool, thanks. I'll try out Hard when I get a feel for the combat and see how I like it.

I'm playing on easy and having a goddamn blast.

Just finished Chapter 1 last night and had to pry myself away to get some sleep.
I always thought the series would appeal to me but I had a hard time jumping into the middle of the story in the PS3 era. Not going to miss this chance to start from the beginning :)

4 attempts and i haven't yet finished OutRun. that's embarrassing :(
It's not embarrassing to lose, it's embarrassing to stop trying. That's the creed of the manly men of Yakuza.

Now, ask yourself this: are you going to give up and die a dog's death? >: (

I can only reconfirm my statement that you have quoted.
Played for 10 hours straight yesterday, this stuff is like crack.
Haven't enjoyed a game like this in years.

It's funny, I felt really burned out on gaming as a whole recently, but DAMN, this game.
What a breath of fresh air. Story is awesome too!!!

Man, I wish I got the Trouble Finder on Kiryu (I picked the Tour Shirt). Been trying to farm Mr. Shakedown and it's usually five-ten minutes of running around between encounters.

On the bright side, Shakedown's currently walking around with about twenty five billion yen of mine, so it'll be a nice payday when I do find him.

What quest gives you that choice?

Hehe, I had exactly the same problem during my playthrough. Finishing up Kiryu's real estate stuff, I burned through a lot podcasts searching for Mr. Shakedown to get the funds to purchase all the different businesses.

Do items carry over into NG+? I grabbed a one-time item from the clown at the shrine and it said I could only use it in premium adventure.

The substories are brilliant in this, the localisation is fantastic as usual. The Yakuza games always have me laughing out loud especially where I have to
buy a porn mag for someone and it goes all Metal Gear so you have to get past some ladies 'patrolling' near it

So this is my first Yakuza and it's not what I expected. I often see this series described as its own thing; with elements from games like GTA and Shenmue, but decidedly not either.

After playing for a few hours now, I feel like what I'm playing is a modern riff on the brawler genre. It feels more closely aligned to games like Die Hard Arcade, Zombie Revenge and Spikeout. Certainly more expansive and with more to do on the side. Certainly with a better story and characters than those games. But at its heart, it feels like I'm playing a modern Streets of Rage. I love it.

Holy shit at that Disco Minigame. It is wonderfully dumb
(and sexy)
. Kazzy boy can cut a rug and I hope to every god up there that Majima gets his own moves.
While I do enjoy it, I am finding it hard at times to nail the timing. I usually stick to pressing as the prompt hits the squares in the corner of the blocks. Yet there are times the background blinds me so I cannot check it anymore.

Beyond that, still fucking around with minigames. Hopefully I can get my fill after I complete batting cages and kill that beast.

Got a couple hours of Yakuza time in last night and got through chapter 1. Shit was rough, but I might just be really rusty. I bought a few Toughness++ drinks and had one left when I got to
Kuze
and I beat him, on Hard, after like a dozen tries. I went looking through posts this morning and people kept saying to use Brawler, but Rush was the only way I was ever able to get any hits in, so I guess I brute forced it. I almost turned it off in frustration, but remembered that I hadn't saved at all and figured there probably wasn't an autosave...seems I was right. Still! Chapter 2 tonight and more fun ahead.

This is what I've been telling everyone, this is nothing like Shenmue at all but more closer to Streets of Rage with RPG elements thrown in, pft even River City Ransom is a more apt comparision then Shenmue. Since Nagoshi was the man behind both SpikeOut and Yakuza, they do share a similar feeling.

Seriously. I think Yakuza Team could easily make a Street of Rage 4 based solely in that stance.

Best game ever - and only 3 hours in!

How they managed to balance serious drama and bonkers side quests and get it so right I don't know. The oomph of the fighting is insane, and I love all the characters I've come across already. I also love pretty much anything Japanese, so just walking around the city and checking out the shops and food places is great. Can't wait to finish work and carry on playing!!!

Question about the batting mini game - what's the trick? I'm playing on beginner but whether you hit the ball or not seems random. Also don't get the mini-car racing game, only one boost allowed and then you sit back and wait for the others to past you?

Name me another modern made game that doesn't use autosaves?

Most people logically thought the game did, only to boot up their consoles the day after playing to find out "hey, why can't I load my game?"

The game doesn't even tell you "visit phone booths to save your game" it just expects you to magically know this before you stop playing.

I'm pretty sure the game told me that like 3 times...maybe I'm crazy?

Then again, I instantly started running up to everything and hitting "X" as soon as I started the game to see if stuff did anything. Blows my mind people could drop even an hour into the game and not notice the giant "S"(s) all over the map..haha.

My first Yakuza ever, but I had a blast last night. This game is hilarious.

Okay, so it's not just me then? Every time I tried to go in with brawler I just got destroyed, which is sad because up until then I was wrecking face with it. I'm just glad that fight's over, and now I'm hoping to grind up a little cash to put into skill ups. I just forgot how bullshit Yakuza bosses can be sometimes.

A question on heat moves, how long is it before you get more heat moves?, I still only really have the "face slam into floor" one.

I can't stand the rapid button presses in that minigame. In the later rounds it's impossible for me to keep up with the AI and I always end up losing solely because of that. Not cool. Otherwise, the distractions in the game are amazing. Love the cabaret club minigame especially!

Yeah. Imagine having to win a tournament 10 times on this mini game (all for one bloody trophy!). Not looking forward to doing that again!

Are Hang-On and Fantasy Zone Majima's arcade games?

Out Run is very good, but I wanna play Hang-On :(

Both Kiryu and Majima have side missions with Club Sega clerks where you level their friendship meters up by playing Space Harrier/Outrun. Once you max out the friendship gauges you unlock Super Hang On and Fantasy Zone. Don't worry, its dead easy to max out the gauges.

Wow seriously? That's MGS4 territory.

Just watch out for the ending, I think the only games that had longer endings were MGS4 and Yakuza 6.

I don't think I've ever completed the original Outrun :x I'm super bad at it but love it so much.

This is why I'm eternally greatful for Yakuza 6 putting different cabs in the arcade - one for normal difficulty and one for easy difficulty so I can actually finish Outrun and Super Hang On.

Just finished Chapter 1, and I'm loving this. I mean, I've loved every Yakuza game to varying degrees, but it still surprises me just how fucking good they are. One damn chapter and I'm totally hooked on this entire storyline, and I already have like five favourite characters.

It did for me, but perhaps that's because I went into the options before starting the game and changed "tips" to "more," which it suggests for people playing their first Yakuza game.

Either way, the game really should autosave. C'mon, Team Yakuza, this is 2017. I was late to choir practice because the first hour of the game wouldn't give me a phone booth.

The hardest difficulty unlocks after you beat the game, correct? Is it after beating the game on hard, or after beating it on any difficulty?
