Yakuza show IGN review: 4/10

Verdict

Without the Like A Dragon name attached, this series would get very little attention. There's so little that's very Yakuza in tone, and it’s so limited in inspiration from the games that there’s hardly much you’ll recognize from them. There’s great character work from some of the cast – particularly Kento Kaku as Nishikiyama – but sadly nothing very interesting for them to do.

...?? Go watch it if you're interested, there's no we.

Nothing about it inspires confidence. The trailer was awful and the showrunner was actively disrespectful of the source material. IGN is notoriously softball so a 4 is a terrible score from them.
Was jus (initially) teasing...I don't put much stock in IGN but you make a good point ☝️

I'll say in here what I said in the Off-Topic thread:

Remove the title Yakuza/LaD from your head when watching this and you'll enjoy the story it's telling much more.

I don't like IGN. I've been a fan of LAD since the first game on PS2. Watched the 3 episodes and didn't like what they did with the story and characters. I had low expectations and they really changed the plot to the point the original game was edgier. I would give it a generous 6/10 because it had some fun action sequences. I'll still watch the final 3 episodes once they release next month.

I agree but then you are better off watching Tokyo Vice on HBO or older movies.

True, I guess the above post would be my recommendation for those who have already seen Tokyo Vice and the older stuff.

This seems to want to tell a tale of two childhood friends, who just happened to be named Kazuma and Majima, as they make a life changing mistake that slowly drags them into a life of crime and gang violence while others around them suffer the repercussions of that mistake, within the 10 year time span that this show takes place in.

On paper, the premise I just wrote sounds good and I like what I've seen so far. That's why I'm not looking at this as a Yakuza/LaD show, because I want to see how it turns out on it's own accord.

Yet another shitty show based on a game where you should just play the fucking game instead. It’s amazing this even got made. Yakuza is really that big now huh?

Fucking gross dude.

Yakuza series has so many great characters, locations, stories, substories, quirks & funny moments (karaoke!), easter eggs and all other RETURNING stuff fans love each time they play a new game.

So instead of building on all of that to capture both existing fans and newcomers they've decided only to take the general concept and prepare their own version, ending up with story differences and a generic product that may as well have a different title.

Personally I don't buy the idea of "forgetting it's Yakuza and just having fun". I love the series too much to accept something like this and be fine with it.

They’ve also been very wrong lately.

Lately? You mean: For many years now.

Maybe I’ll give the show a try. Not sure just yet.
One of my biggest regrets in gaming is to have never played a Yakuza game. There are so many of them now it’s overwhelming.

In this case I believe the rate, as the trailer didn't convince me, but normally a 4 from IGN is an 8 for any normal person with good taste. Their critics are a bit “special” and they make it clear in every review.

An ign 4 is like a TV 8

Reminder they gave Agatha like an 8 and the penguin a 5.

The latter is far and away the better show

I've watched the first two episodes, its not as bad as a 4/10, however it isn't faithful to the original in any way, so die hard fans will defo take issue with it.

Kiryu looks so frail how could anyone think this actor could sell the dragon of Dojima ?

Miike's adaptation is still the only one worth a watch.

I’m going to give you all a tip since all I do is watch foreign TV, if you want a Yakuza show like Yakuza.

‘The worst of Evil’

Thank me later.

Not everything in this life needs to be filmed, not everything needs remasters, etc. I don't think the result surprised anyone, they tried to take and film a game, the plot of which was told over the course of decades and it took 6 games, it is not possible to squeeze all this into a series. Especially considering how much attention was paid to the construction of characters, we actually watched the life of the main character from the stage when he was 20+ and until his old age, and looked at the events of his life from the outside.

As soon as the showrunners said something like "We havent watched/played any of the source material, we want to put our own spin on things" it was obvious this would be dogshit.
Why don't these turds learn from EVERY previous mistake people have made "adapting" games into film?
People don't want your own spin, your spin is shit, they want to see on screen the stuff they saw in the game, is it that hard?
No one wants naked, helmetless Master Chief, Mexican dumbass Leon (and the rest of the casting clusterfuck in that film), Wesker and his diverse daughters or Tiny Kiryu. Just...fuck sake.

This looks like a J-Drama to me, not an American show. J-Dramas are their own thing, they're cheesy and low budget and over the top. I wouldn't mind seeing a review from someone a little more used to that genre.
