Lock if old or not needed.

Be assured we are investigating reported PS4 issues. The number is very small compared to shipped, we believe they are isolated incidents.

Trying hard not to hyperventilate. I'm going to remain optimistic that he's right.

I hope he's right, but we'll found out soon enough.
And to be honest, the first few units that will fail will always get a lot of public attention.

Said to be 4000+ consoles out there being used atm.

8 reported defective units...

0.2% defective rate.

PANIC!

Taking the peak ~30% RROD defective rate initially, that's 15000% better!

Taking the day off work tomorrow. Hope the one Amazon brings me works. Got my fingers crossed it is just a small few and not a big issue.

Yoshida's been doing a great job in terms of being candid, transparent and responsive in the past couple of weeks. If this is a sign of things to come for the PS4 era, more of the same please.

We'll find out tomorrow how many units are affected.

Looks like around 3 million units will be out in the wild by the end of the day tomorrow.

That's a pretty good sample size.

It's like people have amnesia and forget that stories about bricked machines and bugged out hardware are a part of every console launch. Aside from the limited software options available at a launch, it's basically THE reason not to buy a day one console, any day one console.

(And with the exception of the Xbox 360's RROD issue, it's almost always far few units than it seems through anecdotal evidence.)

This is just silly; not everyone with a defective unit is going to report it online to the masses.

Obviously the units that have something going wrong with them are going to attract way more attention than the units working just fine. This isn't really surprising. Hope it is indeed a marginal issue.

EU lets USA beta test hardware ?

seriously hope it is a few isolated incidents, very challenging bring new tech platform to mass market

Because everyone who got a broken system definitely made a YouTube video or blog post about it, right?

Still, hopefully a small number of defectives in line with the usual failure rates.

I would think that most probably did. Unhappy customers are always the most vocal, and in 2013 there are many, many ways to be very publicly vocal.

How do you know its 4700? I thought Taco Bell shipped 2000 consoles?
But yes, even with 2000 consoles it would be <0.5% and there's nothing wrong with that.

Taco Bell had 4000 consoles for prizes. Now, not every one may have been awarded, but we have no evidence to the contrary.

Hardware failures will be exaggerated this gen because of social media. Imagine if Twitter was a thing during RROD. It would be the end of the world.

While I agree with this premise, you realize that this is the age of broadcasting, ie, Twitch is built right into the console.

The nonsense (while hilarious) stream from last night is enough to see that the visibility on hardware failures is going to be exponentially higher this generation than the last one.

Not every failed console has been counted, of that I'm sure, but I'll bet that most of them were.

If the media/journalist PS4s and retail store PS4 kiosks are all used consoles from the tradeshows, then this is actually expected.

Those consoles have been locked in plastic cases for long periods of time.

But that guy who was streaming last night wasn't a gaming journalist, was he?

He had a brand new unit, right?

I'm sure that they had some black belts six sigma-ing this shit from the start. I'd be surprised if we got the catastrophic failure rate of the 360.

I hope for many over-reactions. currently enjoying sitting out the new hardware launch. Look forward to purchasing my brand new system of whatever brand next april-ish.

Exactly. They'd just call Sony.

It's ridiculous to think that it's only 8 consoles, when the majority of them are consoles that are in the spotlight(kotaku, ign, reddit user, gaffer, polygon, hi11zone). What are the odds of that?

There have to be more. We just don't know about it. I'm not saying the failure rate is 1000000000%, because of course it isn't but it's larger than what people are downplaying it to be.

Once people get the consoles we'll know better if there is an issue but for now it seems like it's only a problem for a few people and those people are often the most vocal. I won't be afraid to use it normally because if you're scared to use a console then that's an issue.

Curious to find out the root cause of some of these issues people are having. After reading around it seems like sometimes initiating downloads possibly corrupts the HDD. I don't want to be affected by this issue obviously so I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it.

Glad it's something Sony has acknowledged and is looking into.
