You get 10 minutes with your younger gamer self, what do you say?

Let's say you had 10 minutes with your younger gamer self. What advice, warnings or insights would you share?

For me, definitely: fanboyism is stupid.

I was 11 when Microsoft dropped the OG Xbox and I picked the Playstation side hard. I was deep in the "my console is better than yours" mentality, constantly hyping up Playstation, and trashing xbox without ever giving it a real shot. I remember being genuinly upset when they "stole" my favorite fighting game when they made Dead or Alive 3 an Xbox exclusive. Looking back, I realize how much that mindset limited me. I could easily have spent a little bit less on some mid PS2 games and buying the xbox to enjoy some of those games.

Looking at the last years, it became more obvious that good competition is healthy. Xbox struggling lately has definitly taken the pressure of Sony, which you can see in their decisions, fewer bold risks, more price hikes and a heavier focus on monetization. When a company doesn't feel pressure, it stops trying to impress.

tldr; Stop dickriding your favorite brand and enjoy both worlds while they fight their ass off to give you the best experience.

Honorable mention: Don't throw away the cardboard packaging of your Nintendo games. Seriously. Past me was an idiot.

"Don't let your grandparents sell your Sega genesis at a garage sale"

"Buy that used copy of skies of Arcadia for $20 at gamecrazy"

Don't believe the hype about the CD32, despite being the "1st" out of the 32-bit block, it was the LEAST powerful compared to the 3DO, PSX and Saturn, hell even Atari's very own CD32- The Jaguar..

Don't play Lineage 2. You'll sell your soul for it and you'll still be grinding a whole day for 10% exp in 2025.

When the Dreamcast, GameCube, PS2, Xbox all hit $99 or less on close out. BUY THEM and don't open them. Also, a couple new controllers.

I'd say invest early and everything you have into Nvidia stock. Technically, that deals with a gaming related company.
Yuppp!!

I jumped in late but that stock has already paid for all my PCs, graphics cards, consoles, even some guitars and partly a car. It has also paid for all my online subscriptions and home delivered pizzas.

The stock market is currently trash though and I'm out waiting for some stability before loading up again. Down for the year but not too bad, I stepped out early in the year.

  • Take more care of your SNES boxes
  • Buy Mario RPG and Earthbound, don't let the 30 level cap or the 999 max health deter you from doing so
  • Don't hang the posters that came with the boxes, keep them tucked inside
  • If you see a Wild Guns, Hagane or Aero Fighters while shopping, buy them even if you don't like the genre.

Spend every penny you have on SNES, NES, and Saturn games, keep them sealed, and sell them graded in the 2020s so you can buy a mansion.

Don't let your wife convince you that you should stop mining those "worthless Bitcoin things" in 2010 because it makes your gaming PC too loud.

Keep all NES boxes and everything in good as shape as possible.

I used to open the box and toss it, just keep the sleeve and instruction manual.

Also, for those saying "go outside" as what they would tell themselves, cant speak for anyone else, but man, my childhood was outdoors until momma flashed the porch light. Non issue for me. Me and my twin sister would play outside sun up till sun down, board games, bikes, trampoline, walking our subdivision with the neighbor kids. Playing in the woods. All of it.

That and also how to invest in an index fund, how to invest in your IRA and 401k and explain how easy it'll be if you do it right to retire at 40 and then do whatever you want for the rest of your life. (Play videogames, take up BJJ/Judo, learn to fly planes and helicopter, take some physics classes, etc.)

"Just buy 2 games a year. Right now, you get one game for Christmas and one for your birthday. Keep it that way. When you grow up, you'll have your own money to spend on games, but you'll blow an absolute fortune, have hundreds of games but no idea what to play and severe choice paralysis. Also, don't get sucked into FOMO or overblown hype nonsense. Also, you're gonna go bald."

I would hand myself the technical layout and documents for a Raspberry Pi processor and tell the little shit to sell them to Commodore, so Amiga can live!
Also: "Bitcoin is not stupid, buy as much as you can and make multiple accounts!" & "Buy the fucking TNMT comics and bag & board them, I don't care if the art is ugly".

The fanboyism is just part of being a kid though and it actually helps the industry by introducing more competition.

I would tell my 10 year old self NOT to trade in my N64 and games (Ocarina of Time included) for an extremely shitty Ghost Recon game (think it was the first) on the GameCube. Dude, this game was so shitty the guns weren't even rendered. The developers just put a fucking reticule on the screen and called it good. The graphics were absolute ass too. Not gonna lie I cried when I figured out how bad the game was.

I NEVER bought a game without looking at reviews and gameplay after that. I wanted more mature games since I was getting a little older so I literally just picked the game based on the cover. I still get mad when I think about it. That was one of the biggest ripoffs of my life. The guy running the game store should have stopped me. 😡
