I got so fucking fed up with ads on YouTube I just caved and payed for premium. The music service is a pretty nice bonus that justifies it though. Without it, it would feel pretty cheap.

what’s the best way at to block ads on iPhone or Apple TV? Is there even a way?

I use brave browser and haven’t seen any ads. On my pc I use freetube, but before my waterfox with ghostery and ublock origin also took care of them

I dont think youtube themselves would be hurt but content creator metrics would for sure, which means less overall viewership, less appealing sponsors and what not. I think YouTube would like to keep their creators happy as the grunt of the work is made by them.

freeloaders on youtube just make every view worth less, which means YT pays them less, which means that they are forced to do things like "and now a segue... TO OUR SPONSOR!" type stuff that everyone hates and complains about just as much.

I don't like YT ads, I think they are a pain in the ass, but ultimately the internet is shifting into this mode where people pay for content they consume and it's probably better that way.

With that said, they probably do get more money based on ad impressions if their channel is monetized. But, I've seen demonetized channels still have those annoying YouTube "skip in 15, or 5 seconds," or the long unskippable ones when massive banks like Wells Fargo tell you how virtuous they are. Which means that 100% goes to Google and they're fucking over wrong think creators.

Or grimy corporations that DCMA a 20 minute video for 3 seconds of playtime and steal the entire content creator's revenue. Another lame ass Google/YT rule.

With apps like ShareTube. You can disable the blocking quickly if you choose to support your favorite creators.

That would be my hope, and yet, fucking Comcast is still draining people's blood, demanding more each year. Hopefully, we'll eventually see a breakdown of these structures to allow more reasonable business models to enter markets across goods and services.

Youtube's ads are way too omnipresent to the point where its basically required to use an ad-blocker.

Even more so, the ads that are served have literally nothing in common with my personal preferences which i thought is a requirement for targeted ads.

I literally get ads on dog food, baby diapers and phone subscriptions, two of which i do not have (Dog/Baby) and i am fine with the subscription that i have (The ad served is from one of the big time commercial companies which i ignore anyways).

You know, i see it as this. I believe a lot of people would be more willing to accept an ad if it is relevant to their cause. The vast majority of ads, even so called targeted ones, literally aren't relevant to the user who is forced to watch them. Result: People like ads even less and are more inclined to use a blocker now.

Not that Youtube would care though. Over the years it has been clear that they don't care about their target base so i fully expect YT to do this. In which case ill just find a loophole.

I rarely watch stuff on Youtube these days, so if they push this, I'll use it even less often. Whenever I have to watch a video on my phone, I always get spammed with 10-30 second ads. Fuck that shit.

As terrible as ads are on the clickbaity videos, I can't fathom how someone who won't pay to use youtube and won't watch ads to use youtube could believe that youtube would somehow be hurt if they stopped using it. They deserve everything for free I guess and if they have to pay then the services deserve to die a painful death.

Just FYI the alternative isn't going to be totally free, either.

Creators with sponsored videos get the money of the retention time and even if we use an ad blocker it still is counted. So if they force me to watch an ad then I don't want to see a sponsored video anymore, can't watch 4 minutes of ads for 6 minutes of content.

Ever since they packaged it together with Youtube Music I started using it. I used to pay for Spotify and decided to make the switch. However, from saying all of that, they really screwed up with Youtube Red(shows and movies).

I could imagine a scenario where they not only had ad-free viewing and unlimited music streaming, but also exclusive high budget TV shows and movies to rival HBO or Apple TV. Instead, Youtube Red was nothing of the sort and was quietly rebranded as 'premium' due to how badly they fumbled things.

So it's pretty decent as a music service?

I pretty much stopped using Twitch once they cracked down on adblocking. Ironically I'm more likely to watch a YouTube livestream at this point.

But YouTube is different. I'd pay for the no-ad version. I'm not happy with how everything on the platform is handled but I'm still on YouTube all day every day.

So it's pretty decent as a music service?

It has improved greatly within the last 2-3 years. I'm sure that someone could mention how 'Spotify does _____ better' but as of today I think it's a great music app with it's own unique qualities.

For example, one of it's unique features is that it will pull from youtube videos to find music that you might not normally find on audio platforms, such as obscure movie or video game soundtracks or certain lost recordings that have been uploaded there. You can then add those to playlists as well.

0.000001% of YouTubers are making this kind of money. Let’s flip it around:

Are 0.000001% of doctors making good money? Lawyers? Managers? There are probably 90%+ occupations where odds are better in your favour. YT has no barrier to entry whatsoever and your success relies on damn luck - no, you are not god-tier content creator able to outsmart millions of other people. If you were you would be running Fortune 500 company.

Having said that I pay for YT premium - my time is much more valuable than the monthly subscription cost.
