So framed being 4:3 means you have black bars when playing at say....1440x900? Or would the frame itself fill up the rest of the screen, while the actual gameplay image is in a 4:3 window?

No, ironically, the game viewport is much closer to widescreen resolution -- it's the frame that fills up the rest of the space in the 4:3 window. So there will definitely be black bars.

Small price to pay, though, for far superior visuals IMHO.

I was just checking out a list of the games XSEED have put out and did a double take when I saw a wizardry game.

You guys have a wizardry game and you haven't put it on PC?

Either you don't understand the significance that franchise has with PC gamers or you *really* hate money.

The game doesn't have a PC version. XSEED isn't going to make one; they don't have that kind of programming muscle. All of the games XSEED released on Steam already had PC versions, and they just hired Sara to fix them up, not make new ports from scratch.

I really like the frame style, but I think i'm gonna have to play in chronicles screen mode and bgm with complete art the first time through. It just feels zoomed out for me, even though it really isnt. Might do it when blasting through the game on nightmare mode though.

Keep in mind that your actual viewing area is much larger in Complete mode (you can see more of the area at once). That's probably why it feels zoomed out.

Any quick tips for this demon bat? This is going to take forever and the bats are super cheesy. It also doesn't seem like the regenerate health ring works while sitting idle during the fight. :/

Fighting this boss makes me remember what I dislike about old school games.

Level up. In Ys 1, the difference even 1 level makes is pretty substantial.

I'm at level 10 already. No more levels to go.

I fear it has to be with my weapon. I'm still stuck with the Long Blade, and I haven't found anything else. Nor can I buy anything else.

If I have to go through the abandoned mines again that is going to suck. The only thing worse going through old school puzzle levels is doing so with barely any viewpoint of your surroundings.

So complete mode equals old art, chronicles equals new art. The actual framing/res is set in the config. Took me a sec to get that.

I just finished the game and I can firmly say that that boss was my least favorite part of what was an otherwise excellent experience.

Also, how do people normally beat the last boss? It's insane. I just sort of got lucky after dying repeatedly, ha. Had trouble with
the rock guy
as well. Anything with a lot of projectiles. I wonder if it has something to do with using a 360 controller?

Time for Ys II!

Edit:
I'm still stuck with the Long Blade
Go talk to the militia guy from the beginning of the game, if I recall correctly he'll give you a better sword for free.

What I did was just try to line up his flight path so that you run through him hitting him on the outside so that you don't get walled off into a corner. There's way too many fireballs to even think about trying to dodge them, so I just kept moving and luckily picked him off at the end having almost been backed into a corner. It looks like he flies in a set pattern, so someone with a lot of time could learn to kill him very quickly, I'd think.

Glad I didn't miss any silver equipment in the trip up the tower. That whole final area dragged on quite a bit.

Here bloody here to that. The worst thing about him is that you can't really get "better" at fighting him. Unlike pretty much every other boss in every Ys game I've played, he's just random nonsense, no pattern to learn, no dodgeable attacks, it's just rush him over and over and hope for the best.

I did get out and back into the mines quickly. Finally got the Talwar sword which has been eluding me. Thanks.

This boss is still a pain in the ass. I put on the double damage ring and it doesn't seem to work. In fact, no ring effects seem to work against the demon bat. Not dealing with this boss anymore tonight, going to sleep.

You actually will NOT be able to defeat that boss with your current equipment. You absolutely, positively NEED the Silver Sword to defeat that boss.

The method for getting the Silver Sword is extremely obtuse, but if you're OK with spoilers...
Find the Roda Tree Seed in the abandoned mine, and eat it. Also find Reah's Silver Harmonica in the abandoned mine, and return it to her. She'll play it, which will awaken the Roda Trees... whom you can now talk to, since you ate a Roda Tree Seed. Talk to the Roda Trees, and one of them will give you the Silver Sword.

Once you have that, you should be able to beat Vagullion with little trouble.

Interesting. I returned the Harmonica, and visited a tree after. It just played a cut scene of Adol looking at it and nothing else. Maybe I didn't walk close enough? I'll try again, thanks.

Sounds like you didn't
eat the Roda Tree Seed.

Either that, or it was the wrong tree. There are two of them, remember.

So before I get stuck in, I saw that there's three soundtracks available. Which one is the best for someone who has never played the Ys 1/2 games?

You can actually change your soundtracks at literally any moment during gameplay, so I'd suggest starting with the Chronicles soundtrack (the newest one, featuring mostly studio-performed arrangements by Falcom's in-house rock band) and just... periodically changing to the others to see if you like them better.

Personally, aside from a handful of tracks here and there, I'm a Complete fan, as I find that those particular synth arrangements tend to be overall superior to their instrumental counterparts in most situations (and fit better with the general look and feel of the game)... but my opinion seems to be in the minority on that.

Talking to the important NPCs give you hints from what I remember. They basically tell you what to do. You can miss stuff in dungeons without a map, make sure you find EVERYTHING in every dungeon and you shouldn't have trouble.

I really think people exaggerate how "obtuse" Ys I is. I had no trouble playing it on the PSP when it was released without using a guide.

Thanks, Complete it is. No chance the soundtrack features French accordion right? I love accordions.

Imo start with Chronicles soundtrack mode. Amazing versions of the boss themes, and two several dungeon themes in particular are outstanding. No accordions, but lots of guitars among other things.

I've still got a special place for the Turbo duo version's soundtrack too since that hasnt been replicated elsewhere...and it's got the best opening music.

I dunno, I like the rather sophisticated, symphonic music used in the Complete/Chronicles opening. But then, that might just be because of how well it fits with the visuals, which are absolutely stunning -- as one might expect from animation created by Makoto Shinkai.

I wonder how much (in terms of programmer months) it would take to port those. Can't be that hard, I mean I wouldn't expect them to have tons of custom SPE code :p

I had heard he worked for Falcom, and thought since the Ys openings looked like his style those must have been his work. Nice to hear that confirmed.

EDIT: Maybe I should disable auto-correct.

Just want to forward my thanks to all of XSEED, this is a fine version of the game indeed and I am thoroughly enjoying it. The bump combat definitively took a bit to get used to, but now I am liking it and it is interesting to see the birthplace of some of the more refined mechanics that are in the later games.

Yeah, complete mode is definitely the way to go. Chronicles mode looks horrible and gives you a smaller field of view, I'm not sure why anyone would prefer that.

I am glad there is no achievement with the description "Beat the final boss without taking a single hit", because I would wtf so hard.

I want to know if anyone has ever beaten it on Nightmare without losing any HP. I mean, that would have to require tool assistance or something.

I had heard he worked for Falcon, and thought since the Yes openings looked like his style those must have been his work. Nice to hear that confirmed.

Autocorrect beat the shit out of your post :lol

Ys I has been a blast so far, though the bump system is taking some time to get used to...what was the last Ys game to include the bump system? (I have only ever played Oath and it didn't have the bump system)

Ys 4

I might switch to my arcade stick. The X360 analog pad lacks that level of finesse, so Adol runs around slightly drunk.

I'm curious, how was saving handled in the PC88 version? Could you save anywhere like in these remakes?

Yes, you have always been able to save everywhere in Ys 1 and 2. In some versions, it can result in killing your save file. For example, in the PCE CD version, they don't clear spawns from your location so you can spawn right on top of an enemy and die immediately when you load a save. :(

I gotta say, I'm liking Complete Mode better. I remember reading Sara was going to look into getting the expanded area from Complete in Chronicles Mode. So I pulled out a quick mock-up. (Lame photoshopping skills and all)

Any insight on the dialogue fonts being (if I'm not mistaken) from the PSP release? Watching images on google the fonts from the Eternal version's translation were higher res. It's because Chronicles is a port of the PSP, right? But what about Complete Mode still using Chronicles fonts?

Yeah, while we're trying to get Sara to do more work, I'd really like the option to bring the font size up to something more like the fan-translated version of Eternal/Complete. The current sizing isn't unreadable or anything, but it is needlessly small, and it makes the UI boxes for the full-screen conversations look awkward.

Interesting! Having only really played Oath I was expecting checkpoints and was surprised that there's no structured save system.

Only the Ys games using that engine (Ark of Napishtim, Oath in Felghana and Origin) have checkpoint saving... and then there's Ys V, where you save at inns. ;)

As Pepsiman said, Ys IV was the last game to use the bump system... but note that only the 16-bit versions of Ys IV use bump combat. Taito's PS2 remake and Celceta both use hack-and-slash systems (though Celceta is, erm... a little more fluid, let's say). ;)

Last boss is indeed poorly designed, especially on higher difficulties. It's the damned falling blocks that makes the fight too luck-based, too easy to box yourself in after getting a string of hits off.

Played a bit last night and am really happy to have all these Ys games on Steam. Hope Ys VI will follow, although I already own the PC version patched. Best of all I can play Chronicles without the horribly choppy scrolling in the PSP version.

Lets see how many versions of Ys I have played in my life...

Master System
X68000
TGCD (10 times though)
Sega Saturn
Nintendo DS (BARF!)
PS2
PSP (4 times through)
Cell Phone
Famicom
MSX

And here I am playing through it all over again on an eleventh platform. One of the most replayable games for me without a doubt. Short, sweet, and awesome! Thanks XSEED!

The translation was formatted for the fonts that are used here, and the entire font method is different. I can't really implement the Complete fonts as it is here, unfortunately. I think the Chronicles fonts are probably more pleasant to your "average gamer" anyway, even though I personally quite like the charm the Complete font has.
