What is the native resolution of the widescreen mode? I ask because I want to use a perfect multiple of the native resolution in an effort to avoid messy scaling problems from either the game or my GPU.

This is a pretty great release. It's not very often where a publisher actually cares about putting extra effort into a release of a retro title to really enhance the experience for fans who are looking for a definitive release of an old game. Lots of great options in the settings, which makes it a lot easier to recommend to others too. <3

The duckroll seal of approval!

Oh god, the music at Dios' shop is so ridiculous, I can't stop listening. I'm using the chronicles arrangements.

I couldn't stand it anymore. Took the PC back to the old rental and downloaded the games while the service was still up. Looking forward to smashing through Ys later tonight.

the nonexistent hand-holding in this Ys 1 is something you just don't see done anymore. You're dropped into the world with the premise that Adol wants to check shit out. That's all. I guess they figured that everyone would take that to mean: talk to everyone and everything.

I finished Ys1 yesterday. I'll give it a 4 out of 10 based on the base score of 10 out of 10, followed by deducting 4 points for stupid pointless backtracking right at the end of the game, and another 2 points deducted for having a stupid final boss gimmick which can cause a few replays of the fight just because off some bad luck in positioning. :D

Used to do that in all JRPGs back in the day (talk to everyone I mean). These days, it seems like NPCs are kinda worthless/uninteresting for the most part (aside from a few choice jrpgs), so I can appreciate that.

It's always a little weird when I read comments on here where players don't talk to every single NPC. All I can do is shake my head.

Maybe it's a force of habit but I tend to talk to every NPC at least twice.

Oh boy, the opening in Ys2 is soooooooooooo good. I've forgotten how awesome the transition from the end of Ys1 to the beginning of Ys2 was. It's been so long. :D

You know, I'll say that having Ys1&2, YsF, and Ys Origin on Steam is already a really solid package. There's the secret origin of the world, then there's the original two games which defined Adol, and then there's Adol's first post-Ys adventure remade in the highest standard of the modern Ys6 gameplay. I think I'll be pretty happy even if none of the other Ys games are ever on Steam.

Hopefully these pave the way for other Falcom PC games though.

Ys 1 complete! Glad to see the game isn't super long. Doesn't over stay it's welcome. Besides a couple old school quirks, game was good. I enjoyed Ys Origins more, but it was cool to seeing a new perspective on the world in Ys 1. Tomorrow it is time to start Ys 2.

I have my Ys itinerary planned now.

Finish Ys2, go to Oath, and then play 7 on my Vita.

What version of Ys is being redone for Vita?

Yeah, I appreciate it too when the effort is put into the NPCs. Falcom's older games are fantastic at it. I don't remember Ys 7 being as well in this regard.

About how long is the game, would you say? Only a couple hours in and I'm already level 4 with the majority of equipment.

4-5 hours at best. There's a reason why Ys1 and Ys2 are always packaged together as one release since the PC-Engine days. They fit together very well as a 2-part RPG.

It took me about 6 and a half hours my first time playing it. Probably faster if you know where everything is.

Ys 1 took me 6 hours to beat with an hour of that being me beating my head against the wall trying to kill the stupid end boss.

After playing Ys Origin, listening to the Darm Tower lower level music rendition was great, especially with crazy power guitar.

Yeah, Ys Seven skipped out a bit on the NPC uniqueness compared to Napishtim and Felghana (though was still light years ahead of most other RPGs!). Fortunately, Celceta seems to have remedied that, and has much more in the way of NPC depth.

Beat the first game and tried the Boss Rush Time Trial. That... really fell apart once I hit the last boss. I don't think the Shield Ring is equipped in Time Trial. Can't beat him without it.

I don't think rings have any effect in boss battles.

Playing Nightmare and Time Attack on Ys I REALLY brings out how TERRIBLY most of the bosses are designed given the limitations of the bump attack system.

Vagullion in particular is just luck, as far as I can tell.

It's funny how Ys 2 has so many improvements, but none of them were ever rolled back into Ys 1.
About finished with Ys 2 btw, I figure I have another hour or so to go.

I need some help. I picked up Ys 1+2 for PSP and I can't get into it. I am constantly wanting to swing a sword and not just run into enemies...

Going from Ys1 right into Ys2 is a magical experience every single time. No matter how many times I've beaten the games, it never ever gets old. It's literally like going from a 5 hour demo into the full post-demo game. Everything feels better, looks better, has more depth to it, and is just more fun and significant. Just the first dungeon in Ys2 alone has more of a RPG feel than almost anything in Ys1. The mine is an actual maze, there are sub-objectives, etc. I love all the minor improvements in the presentation too. The chipping sound effect when you're attacking a higher level enemy, the bashing sound when you're at the right level, the various animation effects. It's just so much smoother.

Of course the best part is that while Ys1 has touches of shmup gameplay in the boss fights, in Ys2 it literally becomes a shmup. :D

I had the same issue at first too. But you do get used to it. You really just need to get to level 2. Stay close to Barbados and heal for free while grabbing XP for Adol. Once you hit level 2 everything else falls into place and the combat becomes easier (for the most part) the rest of the game.

Finished Ys 2, the last boss is 1000x better. Seeing all the story parts coalesce was great but the ending is so sweet I almost gagged. Increasing the granularity of power by increasing number of levels but decreasing improvement per level was a good design choice as one level in Ys 1 was the difference between running away in terror and steamrolling enemies. Magic system added a lot of depth
and I'm ashamed that I only learned about charging the fire spell in the Soloman Temple
, when I got the Alter magic I was like "aww shit" because it allowed backstabbing so much easier.

In hindsight it's so weird how Dogi and Adol are best buds when he wasn't given much screen time.

I noticed the icons for Ys I & II Chronicles+ are different than the ones in grid view. Are there 460x215 version of those icons to use instead of the default ones?

First time playing through on any difficulty and the final boss of Ys 1 is cracking my ass up on Hard. Nearly nonsense.

One of the things I like about the latter part of Ys 1 is that you reach max level long before you finish the game, pretty much no matter what, so you can't cheese the final boss by outleveling him or anything like that.

I'm always intrigued when I hear people say how much trouble they had with Vagullion or the final boss, since... well, I've never really had any problems with either!

But then, I also never tried playing Ys I on anything above Normal difficulty. The way I see it, if that's what Falcom says is normal, who am I to question them? I approve of the status quo! ;) Heheheh...

Sorry if it's been asked before, is this PC version very similar to the PSP chronicles, or a different interpretation altogether?

I did really like that. A loose remake of Ys I in the style of Felghana that keeps this element but gives the bosses more behaviors and ditches the save+heal anywhere stuff would be amazing.

Man, after Felghana and Origins, these Ys 1 bosses are a real disappointment. Though I guess that has a lot to do with the crazy combat system too.

Attention XSeed staffers - I half-jokingly tweeted to XBLA publishing head honcho Chris Charla about bringing Ys to XBLA and he said of course he would also love to see it but that it is basically up to a publisher to bring it to them

https://twitter.com/iocat/status/277333222243827712

If you want help hooking up with Chris just PM me...

God I would love to play Ys on a console again...it has been since I sold my Turbo Duo after getting married :p The music needs to blasted, the ass needs to be on a sofa, just my opinion. Tried playing it on my Vita and it is just not the same (and no achievements)

Thanks, for what it is worth I will probably end up buying Ys I and II on Steam too :)

First you should go ask Falcom if there's a Ys game on XBLA. No? Well there you have it. :p

XSeed being available to help with localization etc might make it a lot more plausible for Falcom to do it...if the game is running on Windows, getting it to run on Xbox would not be THAT much of a porting job
