Ys: Memories of Celceta |OT|: The Ys-iest Purchase You'll Make All Year (Now For EUs)

Tell me there's no more of that terrible fish/frog boss.

Fights are never fun when attacks are easy to dodge but you only get to attack once in a while.

Only cowards hide behind shields.

only cowards dodge attacks. real men take them head-on.

speaking of which, think the balance is a bit off in this game. there is more reward and less risk to dodge vs guard.

slowmo is way more useful than a 1-2 crit hits.

They just unified the defense stat into armor in this game.

I don't think there was ever a shield equip lol. But it fit his 'protective' character better imo, and it made more sense because all he did was hump enemies to death ;)

maybe, 'feels' about the same for me, and even then, if you mess up you usually end up dodging the move. poor timed guard could fuck ya up.

I dunno. I could consistently pull off flash guard on attacks quite easily, but the dodge didn't feel near the same and I had more trouble pulling it off.

Got the platinum just a little while ago. It took me ~45 hours I think, would've been 3-4 less if I didn't struggle to find the last couple harvesting points I was missing. Nightmare was a joke at level 60 with Adol's best weapon and armor fully enhanced. Overall I really liked the game, and the plat was fairly simple to get.

Did not really like the fight at the top of Vesuvio. Locked off camera angles meant there were far too many occasions of the boss being in a blind spot.

99.1% map completion while on the last couple of dungeons. Guess that means I'll have to go trawling through the map again...

Just finished this at around 22hrs on normal. Good stuff, although the story and exposition later on are so ridiculous that I couldn't button through them fast enough (Roos?). New skills, new gear, new refinements, new monsters, new areas, exploring the map, and putting together those awesome AoE and mega damage chains are the real draw for me.

I don't think I actually used the guard button the entire game, but doing lots of dash rolls due to the +SP scarf allowing me to have an almost always full SP bar. By the end of the game my go to party for rolling was Adol for Blade Barrage, Karna for Homing Daggers & Napalm Shot, Calilica for Gravity Bomb, and Frieda for Ice Drop and the nightmare circle one. I'd usually take Adol out for regular combat and put him back in for boss fights, more fun to run with all women. Major refinement pushes were +heal, +evade on armor and then +poison, +para, +freeze on weapon. By the end of the game I had these as +20/+30 enchant setups on all three weapons and it made rolling through just ridiculous. But fun ridiculous :).

I missed the final artifact and a few percent of map complete, I had thought there was a post-game but it looks like it's just New Game+? That's a bummer, I don't really feel like playing the entire game, I just want to putter around and finish up the remaining bits of missed map. Or did I somehow misparse the endgame? There was some complaint about not being able to save after heading to the lava mountain, so I have a save before that, is that considered 'endgame', or is endgame only on NG+?

Back to Dragon's Crown which I never finished...

There's really no endgame content, unfortunately. All the optional stuff is the sidequests.

Roger. I thought I had done every quest (would cycle back checking every now and then) but I'm not sure I saw a specific trophy activate or anything. Maybe I'll go back to that last save. Only other mystery I can think of is those rocks on the far east of the map that couldn't be broken, should figure out what that was about...

Just got to the
Sparda dungeon final boss (I hope).

I don't think I've hated a water level as much since OOT's water temple, which really wasn't that bad. It should be a rule of thumb for gaming where you are not allowed to have a water level if you cannot freely control the camera. There were so many times where I thought I had nothing else to do in the dungeon. Underwater combat is shitty, those underwater tentacle things are assholes, and the heavy currents sections are the least obvious obstacle I believe I've come across in gaming. Fuck this dungeon.

What's ridiculous about Roos? They've always been a pretty central part of Ys lore. There was a nest a lot like the one in Celceta in Ys II and Origin had Roos everywhere that reinforced your shit.

It was kind of ridiculous how one sub-boss on nightmare was harder than the final boss of the same dungeon. I had to clear my entire stock of potions to cheese my way through the sub-boss fight.

Maybe some Ys veterans can help me out here. Just got a vita and I've played Ys VI: Ark of Napishtim for ps2 and thoroughly enjoyed it.

How does this game compare to it and really how does Ys VI stack up in the grand scheme? Is it considered one of the best ones?

If it isn't the best Ys game do u think I'm in for a treat if I were to get the other available games on the PSN in addition to MoC which are Ys 1 and 2 Chronicles, Oath in Felghana, and Ys 7?

I don't think I ever saw someone list Ys VI as their favorite game in the series, it's more of a "middle tier" game. If you liked it, try Oath in Felghana, it's the most similar in style.
But really, you can't go wrong with any of the games you listed.

I've played 7, OiF and Origins before and don't remember them, but let's face it, the Ys stories are entirely forgettable; it's really about the mien of adventuring and exploration as the backdrop for the combat and levelling system. But even within the context of Celceta there's a story about exploring a great forest full of hostile monsters, discovering an ancient human civilization, the invading/encroaching army, etc., and then out of nowhere anthropomorphic kangaroos that talk with a tree. It's just very awkward.

My daughters got a kick out of the Sacred Beast Collar, though.

jeezus. I messed up the first quest with the merchant about the gold.

damn. about 30 mins of gametime I may have to redo again. already covered 17 percent of the map. Even killed that giant level 18 ogre which bumped me from level 6 to 9..

ughhhhh.

Roos have always been a part of Ys IV, though, so they kind of HAD to be in there or fans would be REALLY upset. I mean, I certainly would've been! ;)

And while there were no Roos in 7 or OiF, there definitely were in Ys Origin, so I'm kind of surprised you don't remember them. How can you forget the awesomeness of Roos?! They're like the Ys series' answer to moogles! Heheh...

Ys VI is pretty good, it's just that Oath in Felghana refined the formula. It's sort of like comparing Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World, plays roughly the same but the latter is better executed and has way better music.

Also Flash Guard's main purpose is to combo it with your special. You Flash Guard, then hit the left trigger and you take away large chunks of someone's hp. Other than that, Flash move is better.

Easy question. First Ys game in 20 years: Is this where I start?
It should be fine. Just don't do II before I (how the fuck?) and Ys Origin should probably be done after Ys I & II though given it's a prequel there's a valid angle for tackling that first, though I think that's better for marathoning a series replay or whatever.

Yeah. Pretty much all of the Ys games are episodic with the notable exception of the first two, so pretty much all of the XSEED published Ys games (with the exception of Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles) are good starting points.

Sounds good, gonna order now. Thanks! I have such fond memories of Ys years and years ago, especially on my sega master system.

BTW, who wrote the Roo untranslated dialogue? That was some strange, strange shit. I know that the Roos always spoke english, at least in the modern Ys games, but I guess you guys did a bit of a rewrite this time?

Well map says 56% and I'm at 18 hours. I usually am one of those guys that finish games without alot of playtime (unless trying to do everything etc).

I must really be turtling on this game.

.....that or it's because I'm not using a guide, which is something I havent done in a long time.

Either way, I'm loving it just as much as Ys 7 and more than OiF and AoN. (Ys 7 was my first Ys game, so I'm partial to the party system and fast paced combat.)

I felt like I was the king of the world with my +72 Rune Cloak and Rune Blade.

And then Forias Doras came along. Fuck that guy.

We've done a bit of a rewrite in every game we've published that features Roos, actually. ;) It's hidden dialogue, after all, so its mere existence is an easter egg. Might as well give it that personal touch, you know? Heheheh...

I really like the bartender guy. Next ys OT should be:

Ys: I am a mayuuuun.

who translated that ? what was the literal translation ?

The literal translation (and original Japanese) was:

MACHOOOOOO!!

Altering it to "I am a mayuuuun" wasn't really much of a stretch at all. ;)

Pancakes

hot, steaming, as melted butter slips into the cracks, drizzled with sticky sweet syrup OH GOD
Finally beat the game. A bunch of cute girls only to not choose any one of them.

You call yourself a man, Adol!?

Adol's true love is adventure!

(Playing through Ys Seven now, gonna start this one up after I'm done.)
