Zach Braff wants your Kickstarter money for a Garden State follow up

Yeah, this one is ridiculous. I'm with Dynamite on this one. They guy is still a bankable star that could take any number of projects to any number of studios to get made and just also happens to be a multi-millionaire. Asking for donations when you're far, far richer than the people who have your hand held out too is just crass. Then add in the fact that the rewards are written is such a way that it legitimately seems that the actual "reward" is donating your money to Braff.

No thanks.

This.

If you donate $7000 you still don't get to see the film. Well you do, you just have to pay for it.

Someone who donates $7000 for this one surely has another $15 for the movie ticket ;-)

I mean people above $750 already save TEN fucking bucks on shipping, so it's actually just $5 for the movie ticket.

-edit: Wait, you don't even get a copy of the movie with the low-tier rewards? Well, that's just a pisstake. Kickstart something, but not actually getting the product? Is that even allowed?
Kickstarter is not a store, so I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to do rewards that don't give the product.

Kickstarter is not a store, so I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to do rewards that don't give the product.

Because you're funding a project on Kickstarter, as they say themselves, not for profit for yourself, but because you really want to see that project made. If you're both not getting any profit from backing a project, as well as not getting any the actual product from that project. And still have to spend money afterwards to actually (in this case) SEE the product that directly profit the creators. At this point you're literally spending your money on thin air as well as filling Zach Braff's pockets needlessly. You don't get anything, and he gets free money to make the movie and additional money to go buy an expensive car or something that has nothing to do with the actual project.

Sure, they don't have to, but that doesn't make it "right" in my book.

As I said above, I'm not the boss of Kickstarter, but if I ran that website, it would be mandatory for a reward tier to include the actual product for an acceptable price.

But if they want to avoid looking like a store, it is something they should avoid.

Also, for the people saying he should have enough money:
I'd like to use Kickstarter to get my project out there, but I don't really need money. Is that okay?
Absolutely. Kickstarter is about more than just money. A Kickstarter project is a great way to connect with your audience and spread the word about your work.

No. You're kickstarting something. That something should be what your investors obtain.

I'm fine with people donating just for the hell of it, whatever floats your boat. But your store analogy makes no sense. Kickstarter is not a charity for donations, it's also not a website with intention of producing profits for all, it's about crowdfunding something you want to have. Not actually delivering what you're making is a big pisstake, whichever way you want to look at it.

Only donated to the AVGN movie and the Pure Pwnage project.

You just have to be smart and donate to good people. Most will learn their lesson in time after getting their fingers burnt by greedy old 90's devs and bored multi millionaires.

I love Zach Braff but he's a couple years ahead of me so I'm not really into the subject matter of a struggling young father.

But best of luck etc etc

I like Zach Braff.
I remember vaguely enjoying Garden State.
No way would I throw money at this Kickstarter.
I still hope it succeeds though, just to twist the knife in Melissa Joan Hart.

It's baffling that they're fine with giving you a return on your investment if you're a film studio, but if you're some dweeb sitting behind your computer, they'll take your money and generously allow you to act as an extra. Disgusting but it allows fans to think they're in charge or something I suppose.

I really don't think it's 'disgusting' to put a deal on the table and offer the fans the *choice* of whether that deal is worth their money.

I like Braff, and I really enjoyed Garden State that one time I saw it, but this gives me weird feelings.

Garden state was one of the most insufferable films ever made. Ever.

I hope this gets less funding than that Walk of Shame movie.

Rich people asking me to donate money to their cause. Let me think about this one for a minute.

Those reward stages always make me cringe.

$2.500 to be an extra? Well have fun being the idiot on set who spend $2.500 to be there while all the other average Joe extras got there for free (and maybe even get paid)

A new garden state soundtrack would be worth it alone. One of my all time favorite soundtracks.

BE A CAST MEMBER// For one of my biggest supporters, here’s one of the biggest rewards. You will be a credited as a cast member of "WISH I WAS HERE". Visit us on our set and if you want, I'll put you in a scene we are shooting and write a line just for you. And, we'll give you the star treatment. Hair, makeup, wardrobe, and a space to practice your line. We'd like to shoot in August in LA, so if you would like a walk on role to complement your credit, you’ll need to be available then. You will provide your own travel and accommodation.
whoa! if you want, he'll write one whole line just for you!

Even better, for 10k you can get credited, without even having to shoot a single scene.

I've heard of people getting credited that got their scenes deleted from the films, but getting a credited role and not actually having a role at all is new. I wonder if IMDB has a special tag (like the (uncredited) tag for cameo's) for this.

John Doe (Paid for credit) ... Not actually in this movie.

I loved Garden State, a really wonderful film and I think Braff and Portmans best work.

Ill be honest the pitch doesnt thrill me, and the tone idea doesnt thrill me either, Garden state was a real tonal shift to what I was used to seeing in films and I really digged it, but it didnt feel like a new genre or new way of filming, not the extent that I particularly want to see any more films with that kind of tone. But the talent invovled was good, the movie was good and i think for how much I loved it ill pitch in.

Braff you fuckin' scrub.

Crowdsourcing - the newest way for rich people (leveraging their fame) to exploit dumb middle class/poor people.
Its uninformed posts like this that make my day great.

In for $100, i like the guy and his work. If you don't like it or KS simply don't back it. Crying on the internet is going to do nothing but make you look like a bitter and jealous fool.

Hey Zach, how well did Garden State do?

Now his investors get nothing, and he gets everything!

Hi bibiani. Take a deep breath. I don't have 22 million dollars. I am putting PLENTY of my own money into this movie. This is not some type of scam. If I wanted to print more money, I'd just go back to TV. This is about making a smaller, personal film for my fans with no compromises. In terms of the script, I only showed it to 2 producers; my favorite ones; (Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg) They produced Pulp Fiction, Reality Bites, Django, my first movie and many more. They said yes. As I explain on the page, I could have this film financed yesterday if I agreed to deal points I think are unfair. The day will soon come when fans can invest in a film like a stock and reap the financial rewards if it's a success. That is not yet legal. So in the meantime for $10 you can essentially subscribe to an online magazine about filmmaking and I guarantee you, you will like the content I put up. This isn't a con. It's a hail mary pass to make something for you without casting some fuck-head in all the roles.

Well, if he's putting his own money in as well, and the cash he's obtaining from Kickstarter is additional help, that's alright by me.

Still, I won't donate to this cause - don't like the prizes.
