I'm ambivalent on this. I don't think Zack Braff needs the money, nor do I think he would have that difficult of a time finding some small, aspiring studio to do a film with him.

But if he recruits a 9 year old and says she wants to direct a film for the first time, then I'll be on board. ;)

700K during first day, wow.
I know Veronica Mars reached 2 Million around 11 hours, but this makes Melissa Joan Hart's project seem like a joke.

"Wish I Was Here" is the story of Aidan Bloom (played by me), a struggling actor, father and husband, who at 35 is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life.
Jesus Christ just shoot me dead now. Aren't there enough mopey white guy movies? Even the title seems like a parody of this tired ass genre.

Things with huge fan bases as fan service need kickstarters for those who would t normally get funding ...

An angel movie
Buffy movie
A full house reunion movie

Not pet projects from people who won't have "full control"

Veronica Mars good idea

Isn't Scrubs in syndication? Fuck this guy.
Yeah, but so? That would make the producers and creators rich. Braff was neither; he was just the lead actor and nothing else. Some of y'all are acting like he created, acted in, wrote, produced, directed, scored and owns the rights to Scrubs. WTF

Kickstarter is really only for people with existing fanbases, who don't want to take out loans or deal with real financiers, and instead want virtually strings-free cash. A few others will break through thanks to hot button issues or some attention grabbing concept that an actual celebrity shines light on. The vast majority of users will only really reach friends and family, maybe get a few shares beyond that.

I can't wait for Braff to get this funded then sell distribution rights and make a cool couple million while having absolutely no one to repay.

This is why I hate kickstarter

This comment from comingsoon.net says it all.

Why don't these self-involved Hollywood hacks fund their own vanity projects instead of turning to the average hardworking citizen during a recession?

I still like Zach Braff, though. :)

That's so funny. I was just listening to the Garden State OST the other day and remembering how much I enjoyed that movie. I need to watch it again!

It's not like Braff is going to be the only one working on the film. Maybe financing it this way allows for more of the revenue to go to the creative personnel rather than the financiers? Anyone who wants to work on the film is going to know that there's no investors putting money at risk or expecting money in return.

I didn't back it myself, but I don't see the problem with putting it on Kickstarter.

too many lols at this
Why aren’t you offering a Digital Download or DVD reward?

I wish I could give you all everything you want. Unfortunately, giving away the movie could scare off the good distributors for movies like this, because the theater chains insist on having the “first run” of movies before they are available on DVD or digitally. I want all my fans to be able to see this movie in their hometown theaters on the big screen if they want to. I hope you like the rewards I am offering, and if there’s something you don’t see on the page, please comment and let me know.

I liked Garden State a few years ago, but I don't look back on it that kindly. I really like Braff and I like Scrubs, but I hate the idea of a kickstarter for a celebrity. He has plenty of money, and I'm sure this will be successful.

Though it has already gathered 800,000 damn.

Its more than likely the movie will not cost only 2 million to make, he might already be planning in putting a lot from his pocket as well as using the Kickstarter money.

Just a guess of course but 2 mill sounds kind of low for a feature film.

He did write and direct some episode IIRC.

LOL, Kickstarter is the worst example a troll could pick when mentioning economic issues. People out there pour incredible mounts of money into a wide variety of projects. Average and otherwise.

I want to see it. The movie sounds great from his description and it's not a direct sequel to Garden State, which is good. However.....the fact that none of the backer options actually gives you a copy of the movie is just dumb. No dice from me. I'll see it/buy it if it gets made.

One way or another, everyone except the backers are likely to get a payday off this.

Braff's clearly structuring this as something that makes money. He explicitly talks about selling it to a distributor.

I'm sorry, I'm not a fan of a business enterprise asking for funds while giving very little back. You don't even get the product here. There's also very little reason to believe Braff can't raise these funds another way. If he only needs $2 million as a minimum, I have no doubt he could find funding somewhere. But he doesn't want to work for it, and he doesn't want to owe anyone. To me, that's a problem.

Once again, people: STOP ENCOURAGING ZACH BRAFF TO HAVE A CAREER. In doing so you are just enabling an eventual future where he will end up playing Egon in a Ghostbusters remake. You'll all feel sorry then. Some of us already feel sorry.

This is so scummy I can't believe it. His excuse as to why he won't give out digital copies to backers is unbelievable, he tries to phrase it as a good thing. Fuck Zach Braff, Garden State is such a pretentious and terrible movie and the premise for this new one sounds even worse.

That sounds like a great idea to me, actually.

Garden State was one of the most insufferable, self-indulgent movies I've ever sat through. The world does not need anything else like it.

Request DENIED.
I couldn't agree more. There are few movies that have inspired such loathing in me.

I'd kickstart that.

This project seems more of an insurance against potential failure or budget mismanagement.

By not offering backers a digital download of the film, he's taking a huge risk, but apparently it's not mattering to people.

Then again I'd be willing to bet the majority of people backing are assuming they'll get a copy of the movie without realizing otherwise.

Dis muhfucka at nearly half his goal and it's the first day?

Sorry MJH.

Despite of all the hate he gets, I'm still kinda okay with the guy. His relationship with Donald reminds me of a friend of mine.

I'm sure he gets great residuals.
