I don't buy it. People are looking to say he played it wrong or wanted something different when there's no basis for that.

I'm referring more to your character dying and having to restart. If people come into it with gameplay expectations developed from playing countless other games then they'll probably come away disappointed, or in some cases thrilled.

It does however suggest the need to read the review itself and weigh it up personally.

I really need to make an effort to demo some of these games. I suspected this may happen - no Wii U game will get an aggregate higher than mid-80s purely because it's not the SNES era anymore. It's extremely tiring. Makes it hard to know what's actually bad and what isn't. I mean, Red Steel is genuinely shit. Good chance Zombi U will be the same. But Excite, man. Excite.

Reading the content of the reviews is sometimes worse than just reading the score, by the way. So many Wii reviews are literally wrong.

Seems to be that the tl;dr version of this whole situation is:

Game probably isn't great, but the GS reviewer spends more time on subjective bias issues, overshadowing the legitimate issues the game appears to have. Massive debate ensues.

I think it's more:

One reviewer didn't like the game, panic ensues.

Whether you agree with the score or not the fact people seem to expect uniform opinions when it comes to reviews is ridiculous. Not everybody likes the same things, SHOCKING.

It sounds like this is backfiring in Ubisoft's face if the only advance review out for this game is a 4.5. Let the other sites put out their reviews already! Your assumption is that he means reviews give a game 6/10 when they're "factually" 9/10 or whatever. While he may mean this, reviews can be factually or literally wrong in specific details they call out. Sometimes even in a more general sense - for example, this ZombiU review keeps talking about how the focus is on the cricket bat, but the game could come out and we discover that you're given plenty of opportunities to use other weapons, meaning calling it a "focus" would be wrong. It'd be like saying Galaxy 2 focuses on Yoshi when he's only in a handful of levels. That sort of thing.

Of course he's not providing quotes/examples of facts that are wrong, so we don't know, he might be referring to the subjective number or he might be referring to the objective details.

It's kind of exciting how all over the place this game will be scored.

I mean, it's nice to see Mario get such consistent scores but that was boring.

I don't believe the game's embargo was held until Sunday for this reason though.
