PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Well, it's the worst Sakura Wars game, and most people were salty it's the one they chose to localize instead of the PS2 version of Sakura Taisen 3.

It was the most practical choice for NIS America. A brand new title not requiring familiarity with the core cast.

It's an SMT-esque situation too: even the worst Sakura Wars title is still a solid game.

Are there any EU exclusive jrpgs?

I've got a couple of Japanese games and super robots that I've been playing on a friends' nodded ps2

I know of one: Oz, a Konami RPG. Don't know if it's any good.

Raw Danger
Disaster Report
Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne

You're definitely missing Castle Shikigami 2. A must-own. GrimGrimoire's a notable as well.

I'm glad you have both Growlansers. I know everyone hates on V/Heritage of War, but I like it too.

Also, no Ace Combats? The PS2 trilogy are works of art.

Lastly, Drakengard. Just the first one.

I was never too big on Ace Combat but I tend to not like flying titles in general, with the exception of maybe Star Fox, and even then it's iffy. I'll look into the other games along with the stuff the other poster mentioned. I did look at the OP and noted that these looked interesting, but I have very little knowledge of the deeper areas of the Ps2 library.

Shadow Hearts
Fantavision
The Bouncer
SMT Nocturne
Grimgrimoire
Nano Breaker

If nothing else, play Ace Combat Zero. It cuts right to the chase, and has the best dogfights in the series. If you like that, you're in.

Looking at the Castle Shikigami series, I can't find any record of an original game (just the 2nd and a third one for wii?), any ideas?

Ghosthunter, Gregory Horror Show, and Kya Dark Lineage are all really fun and exclusive I think.

The first Shikigami no Shiro is available in North America as "Mobile Light Force 2"

Mobile Light Force 1 on PS1 is actually a localized Gunbird by Psikyo. It's unrelated to the Castle of Shikigami series. Blame the bizarre naming convention on the crazy publisher.

I've now clocked up over 400 PS2 games and rather than trying to collect everything I've been trying to get hold of every RPG released. I've never found a trustworthy definitive list of RPGs - maybe people here can help.

I'm not sure if I can bring myself to buy all of those Romance of the Kingdoms games, but now that I'm getting close I'll probably pick up most of what I'm missing eventually.

I've not played that many RPGs on the PS2, but one that I do have, Musashi Samurai Legend, is missing off your list.

I've got that game but for some reason thought it was more of an action game. It reminds me that a community member on Giantbomb wrote an extensive love letter to the PS1 predecessor Brave Fencer Musashi not long ago. Did you like it?

Never played the original, but from what I've seen of it it looked better than Samurai Legend. It's an action RPG, similar to Kingdom Hearts in a way. The battles take place in real time and the main enemy type always reminded me of a mechanical version of Kingdom Heart's Shadows. There was a hub world, and the levels branched off that. The game was fun from what I played, but it's really slow. The into cutscene shows Musashi zipping around super fast and doing flips and everything, then the game starts and your run speed is equivalent to a lot of games jogging pace.

The game had a pretty unique visual style; it reminded me of an uglier, cel-shaded Okami. Musashi had the most annoying voice though. According to IMDB it's the same person who voices Anna Williams on Tekken and Axl on Mega Man X7.

How good is digital devil saga? I still have 1 and 2 sealed

I was going to get those years ago in a 2 for £30 (I think it was that) in GAME because I thought the box art looked cool. When I went to get them the first one was out of stock though. Was gutted haha.
Just checked Amazon UK and they're both under £9. I'm extremely tempted, especially now I know it's good.

Came in for Planetside 2...

I dont know what I was thinking

iDgeWWXBkdJWQ.gif

I picked up a copy of Castle Shikigami 2 from my local thrift store. I'd never heard of it before, but it's a shmup and I like em shmups

So it seems that leaving my PS2 controllers with the lead wrapped around the middle for several years untouched has somehow wrecked them.

Anyone know of a decent place to order an official Sony PS2 controller in the UK? Preferably new and priced within reason.

You can wrap your cables but be careful not to bend or pull on the part where they go into the controller. Always leave that with a little slack.

I've seen people trying to trade in so many busted controllers that looked like a prolapsed rectum.

Popped in king's field and i literally took 10 steps and died

but just like the souls games, i gradually figured stuff out, got far, got cocky, then died again

if the turn and look speed weren't so atrocious, this would be much better, but it seems worthy of a playthrough regardless. i just gotta restart because i killed all the NPCs for some reason.

Taito Legends 2 is the jam.

so is TL1! I considered importing Taito Legends Gekan vol.2 from japan just for Rastan 3 (which I didn't even know existed) but there's too much overlap with the USA collections...

I have so many great games in my PS2 backlog that I'm sure I'll never finish. But they'll always be there waiting for me if I have the time, and I know there must be many more hidden gems I can seek out if I want to. And plenty of great games still need fan translations. (Someone get on that second Wizardry PS2 game, PLEASE!)

Great console, great hardware.

Wonderful game. (Whichever of the KF games you're talking about.)

What I love about the instant deaths is that they're deliberate design decisions. At the beginning of KF:TAC, it's placed there to set a tone, to remind the player who's in charge and what awaits them. Just like the Dark Souls games, really. <3 FROM

Excellent.

2 is the better but part 1 is still fantastic. Give them a play :)

Fantastic, belongs in the top 5 on the system. You have to play them in order, direct connections.

unseal and play

You have one seriously odd definition of RPG... what, to you is most of the strategy and simulation games on the PS2 actually an RPG? They are different genres! These are not RPGs.

Everblue 1 and 2
Way of the Samurai 1 and 2
War of the Monsters
Alien Homonoid
Every Onimusha title

Colors I'm not sure we even got!

ps2_color_1qmxqz.jpg

I'm not sure if these have been touched on, but these are from the European Automobile Collection. There are 2,000 worldwide of each color. 666 per region with the extras, well, somewhere else. The serial number indicates what number system you have. I believe the US systems were available for purchase on Sony's website.

These were painted with real automobile paint and there are few pictures which really do the system justice. I was lucky enough to find one of the Metallic Silver (the one on the far right) here locally. Sadly, it did not include the stand.

Every Onimusha title

nah, Genma Onimusha on Xbox > Onimusha 1 on PS2.

yeah, the ancient city.

Forgot to check my feet!

I want to love The Ancient City. I really do. But whyyyy dooooo youuuu tuurrrrnnnn sooooo slllooooowwwwww. It drives me insane

Eternal Ring, which came out before, has a much more tolerable turn speed. I really like that game actually.

Normally turn based tactics games are known as tactical RPGs (or sometimes strategy RPGs) which are at this point a pretty well established sub-genre of RPGs. Almost everything you listed as not RPGs fall into that category. Harvest Moon type games are different and maybe they're considered pure simulations rather than RPG-lite.

Been on a big PS2 kick lately. What are yalls thoughts on gaming through a 60gb bc PS3? Do you find the input lag to be detrimental (or even noticible)?

It's a bit obnoxious when I used to do it, but I did game on a fairly high-lag LCD. I now game on a monitor/TV low lag hybrid and I imagine if you do its serviceable.
