This coming Thursday, almost certainly. Like I said before, they had a special with the voice actresses this week, so the show hasn't even really begun in Japan yet.

So, seeing as how attempting to recommend Detective Conan is a bit unfeasible given it's staggering episode count with more than 700 episodes, about a dozen OVAs, and coming up on it's 18th movie, I thought it might be beneficial to present a few great episodes to give a small taste of the series and hopefully persuade others to dive in. Because simply not suggesting the show isn't acceptable it really has earned it's place in both anime and detective stories in general.
That being said, below you'll find episodes that work perfectly when viewed by themselves. In case you don't know anything about Detective Conan, here's a very brief story summary from Detective Conan World to get you started:
Ep. 11 "Moonlight Sonata Murder Case" (1-Hour Special)
Ep. 22-23 "Luxury Liner Serial Murder Case"
The Luxury Liner murder case gets on this list because it's an entirely classic "whodunit" scenario where everyone has a motive, everyone's suspicious, and the tension continues it's rise until the very end. The cruise setting is often repeated after this case, but I think this is my favorite of the bunch.
Ep. 27-28 "Kogoro's Class Reunion Murder Case"
Ep. 34-35 "Mountain Villa Bandaged Man Murder Case"
These episodes always stick out in my head because of how macabre they are. The story centers around Conan, Ran and Sonoko going to a villa and spending some time with some of Sonoko's acquaintances. They're not there long before violent attacks begin happening from an assailant cloaked in bandages and wielding an axe. There's some surprises in this one and even a unique deduction show.
Ep. 76 "Conan vs. Kaitou Kid" (1-Hour Special)
Currently, all of the episodes Funimation released are streaming over at their website. However, the quality of their videos leave a lot to be desired. Especially since the Luxury Liner and Alpine Hut cases now have remastered versions, so if you can find other means to watch them, do so. I'll probably just end up using this post as a way to direct people towards episodes to watch when recommending the show, so happy sleuthing folks!

Even if you don't follow Detective Conan, you've probably seen the characters if you've been around anime. One of the more striking and fan-loved characters is the gentleman thief Kaitou Kid and his striking white suit. The episodes involving a heist with Kaitou are always a treat, but none have been as great as his debut appearance in this 1-hour special.DCW said:

Very interesting finale, but it hardly brings closure to the story.
I guess it's sort of fine considering the story is a bunch of essentially folk tales haphazardly linked through a single character, but the lack of any real resolution probably was annoying when this first came out. I feel the series could have been better with maybe more recurring characters building upon their characters so I feel this show was roughlya 8/10

Cool that we take a small step into Ginko's past and see some interesting effects of the imbalance of mushi though.
I went into it with nothing but then I saw that rainbow and it just kept going from there.
That's a pretty solid list, all of these cases are very classic Conan. I have watched them so many times, but from that list Luxury Liner Serial Murder Case and Mountain Villa Bandaged Man Murder Case are my top favourite ones.
There shouldn't be any, Star Driver is the best of BONES studio's original series.

I liked this a lot. It's the usual perverted comedy with waifus and all these hijinks, but somehow this all worked together. I'm also a fan of the animations, the colours are sometimes screwed up, but the general scenery is appealing. I have no idea what direction it's going or if it will get worse based on the source material, but the first episode was promising.

Well for Crunchyroll-availabe comedies, I'd suggest:
Tonari no Seki-kun! (Basically reeks of Calvin & Hobbes, to me at least.)
Golden Time (More drama and romance, but some seriously funny moments and characters spread throughout)
Little Witch Academia (If you haven't watched this yet, you dun goofed.)
I dropped it around them too. For it was the setting characters not being interesting at all to me.
This is the worst thing anybody's ever said about BONES.

Star Driver was around a 7/10 for me if I recall correctly. I enjoyed the characters and the animation, hated the indecisive girl with her "IT'S SO HARD LOVING TWO BOYS EQUALLY AS MUCH". Also neither of my best girl choices, pink haired ones or the stockbroker, won. All because It's a Pinch had some fascination with the blonde girl.

Someday I want to tackle Detective Conan, I read the manga until 3XX, it's a shame I don't have as many time now as I did last year or I would try to watch it.

Rowdy Sumo Wrestler Matsutaro 1
That was more fun than I expected. It feels like a show from the 80s, say Chie the Brat, which is not surprising for the adaptation of such an old manga with its Showa-era setting. The first episode doesn't even get to sumo, instead establishing Matsutaro as this big, dumb brute, selfish yet somehow lovable in his dull-wittedness. He gets into various hijinks which start with him plucking out nose hairs and sneezing all over his classmate's test and escalate to an absurd degree. The character designs are appealingly retro, the art design is simple yet attractive, and the whole thing is surprisingly lively animated for a Toei show - might just be a first episode thing, but I'm still impressed.
You should definitely watch this if you like 80s hijinks anime.

Fun episode. Half the plot being "Honey's song is such an earworm", with Hime being annoyed by it being stuck in her head. You and me both. I'm glad they're not dragging out the Yuyu = Honey storyline for too long, even if it took Yuuko herself telling Megumi and Hime directly, since they couldn't quite figure it out themselves. She may call it a Baton, but I'm pretty sure that her weapon is on loan from the Suite girls. I'm also glad that next week we finally get to see her transformation (and finisher?). Yuyu becoming a regular member of the party means good things. And she has a secret.

))))))))Well animated, simple though unambitious story that has a clear message, likable protagonist, great soundtrack, as well as the best BONES ending.
How can any person say otherwise? Will you also be telling me that the messes of DtB, Eureka Seven, Wolf's Rain, or even the first FMA adaption come anywhere near?

Wolf's Rain is one of the greatest, most powerful anime series ever made, especially the gut-wretching ending which drives home the affection for the characters that's been built up over the full course of the series. It certainly does not deserve to be called a "mess".
The final handful of episodes to the end that throws away the meaningful buildup before it cannot be overlooked.
I only kept going because of Kanno.

Yes. Yes I would.
I'd even throw Xam'd in there and god knows THAT took a total nosedive when protagonist went on to lose his way for a third of the show. Star Driver was seriously garbage in comparison, an incomprehensible mess fueled by libido and a completely one dimensional and uninteresting protagonist who experienced -1 character growth during the entirety of the series, ass pulls literally everywhere.

Wolf's Rain is probably the best ending in a BONES original series. RahXephon is pretty great too. The ending isn't as well executed as Wolf's Rain, but it's still probably my second favorite anime series ever. Eureka Seven has a pretty great ending too. Good thing they never made a sequel or a movie or anything like that. Whew.
Star Driver's ending isn't awful, but it's just not particularly memorable, other than all the amazing mecha animation in the final episode.

God damn it, god damn it all, I wanted to like this, I really did, it feel like a throwback to another time, another age, it feels like a 1980s anime/manga thing. It has an unique art-style and is clearly on the higher end of TOEI animation talents, clearly some of the money they save doing One Piece episode is flowing to this work. That being said, a I absolutely hate Matsutaro, I can deal with selfish jerks being protagonists, this guy is just worthless brute and a bully who uses intimidation and violence to stratify his urges. Worse yet any and all attempts to make me laugh failed utterly and that is the worst thing a comedy can do. The motre I think about this show the more I get angry over its presentations of callousness and tepidness being attempted to be passed off as endearing, one of the worst of the season thus far avoid at all costs.
