Xbox One gets external storage, real name support, auto-sign in w/June system update

I'm gonna look into getting a TeraByte Hard Drive now but I'm pretty miffed we didn't have a TeraByte to begin with. Again, the for the price of Xbox One, this should've been included.

The most requested features by Xbone fans are largely things PS4 already has.
Like what? The only things I can think of that the PS4 has that the Xbox One does not are remote play - but then MS doesn't sell a handheld console to take advantage of that - and the game DVR recording 15 minutes instead of 5. There are loads of things the Xbox One does that the PS4 doesn't though - and there's a Sony website full of PS4 owners requesting those features as proof of that.

The most requested feature I see on the Xbox forums is related to media support and being able to play videos/music off an external hard drive or stream from a PC. Both consoles are terrible for that stuff right now, but at least the Xbox One allows me to use the "Play To" function in Windows to stream videos to my console.

Has Sony come out saying that they're going to allow external support too? Could you provide a link please as I don't recall this at all?

BTW this is coming from someone who has never owned a Microsoft console, who has a PS4. I just don't feel that Sony is communicating with us very well in comparison to 6 months ago/Microsoft currently.
Nope but they will, external storage support is something i think is important enough with the rise of digital games.

The most requested features by PS4 fans are largely things the Xbox One already has. The top 5 most wanted features are the ability to delete 0% trophy games, the ability to change your PSN ID, the ability to view your trophies offline, a YouTube app, and the ability to change a sub account to a master account. The Xbox One already has 4 of those 5 things and I'm not sure the sub/master account is even relevant to it.

For a "hardcore gamer" console, the PS4 is light on features. There's not even a way to organise your games, get notifications when friends come online (2 more highly requested features on Sony's site), or quick resume a game from standby.

That list is laughable. I guarantee you that is not the top 5 most requested features. The fact that enhanced media support is not even in the Top 8 is all you need to know.

The 256gb limit kinda sucks. No thumb drive support unless you buy a $250 256gb flash drive.

How is this an issue? Flash drives have huge variations in speed and quality because of so much cheap flash memory. Hard drive performance is semi dependable and super inexpensive...easily fine a 1 tb hard drive for around 50 bucks

Because clearly adding features that are already on PS4 is beating Sony. And no adding external storage support is not better than the ability to change your internal storage to whatever size you want but it will be a welcome addition when Sony adds it to PS4.

Its funny reading these threads, with every update Microsoft releases you see these comments. Most of the update features are things that were on PS4 from day 1.

You guys come out of the woodwork for every xbox update thread. Where were you complaining when 1.70 added a bunch of features xbone already had?

I don't see how it is a bad thing that they're trying to keep up with each other

When it's a bog-standard 2.5 inch HDD?

Knowing that Microsoft sold these separately for absolutely insane prices for the Xbox 360?

Yeah, i'd call that a scam.

You just typed 3 completely unrelated sentences but you seem to want there to be a connection between them.

I learned last generation that you need as much storage as you can get.

Free games, DLC, all these things add up over time.

Last gen i ended with a 250 gb harddrive and it is not cutting it at all...i have no where near enough storage. 3-4 tb addon will do fine hopefully :)

Now please give me HDMI-CEC. My Smart TV doesn't like IR blasting, and won't switch inputs automatically without it. PS4 does it amazingly, pressing the PS button quickly brings me back to the game. It's legitimately faster to have a cable box / antenna plugged directly into my TV or receiver and tapping the PS button to return to the game input than it is to say "Xbox Watch TV".

Reordering the pins is going to be so much easier on Smartglass than on the console itself, which is kinda weird but nice.

I got a 4 TB external hard disk in preparation for when I get my Xbox One, I'm glad I can use all of that space (or most of it after formatting).

Go through my post history and find any post from me in any Xbox One update thread.

And to answer your question, no. I was not complaining, I was however disappointed they did not add feature i'd have loved. Instead of you lot talking about this update, you instead become faux concerned why PS4 does not have external storage support. The first few pages are people "hoping" sony would add external storage support.

I wonder if the 256GB minimum limit is because the console reserves a big chunk of space on the drive? I hope not, but I can't see why else they would have that limitation.

Have they explained how we can use the record feature without Kinect? Is it part of an upcoming firmware update?

You could always use the record feature without kinect; it just sucks to do it that way. You have to snap game DVR (you can do this from the dashboard) and click 'end clip now'

They need to add a shortcut like double clicking the home (or view) button or something so it works like the share button. I hope if/when they add screenshot support there is a shortcut

Good stuff. Having the HDD non-replaceable is nothing but a scam this day and age.

Say what now?

Scenario 1: Replaceable hard drive.
- Console comes with 500 Gb hard drive
- Buy a 1Tb drive and swap it out
- Total drive space available 1Tb

Scenario 2: External hard drive supported
- Console comes with 500 Gb hard drive
- Buy a 1Tb drive and plug it in
- Total drive space available 1.5Tb

Scam me more, Microsoft!

edit:

Did you realise you can buy any off-the-shelf USB3 drive to use (>256Gb)? It's not a Microsoft-branded one only.

.

So damn true... I have already had to clear out my X1 a couple times (I buy too many games).

The only thing on my big list that NEEDS to be done MS is update Xbox.com to include games .. achievements and more like they have for 360. I really do not understand why this is not there since it was day one for the 360.

Outside of that.. fantastic update support and being clear about what is coming soon is awesome.

Very impressed so far with Microsoft's turnaround on these system updates. They've been quick to respond to many user requests, which is appreciated. I wish Sony's system updates were as fast, that's one of my only complaints about my PS4 actually.

Such as? The only thing that comes to mind would be preloading and even that only works in the USA on the PS4.

Well the ability to take a screenshot is the most obvious one I can think of.

Smartglass remote play from a Windows 8 device would be nice too.

Yeah, it's really bizarre. Even worse though is the xbox one "store" at store.xbox.com

Smartglass is not a good replacement for a decent web site

Screenshot functionality would be nice aswell. "Xbox take a screenshot" and sort it in an individual page in Upload.

Microsoft again killing it with updates..meanwhile my playstation sits there with 1 update adding nothing of value to me :(

That external storage will come in handy for demos i think

Man reading through the comments, am I the only one who is disappointed for not having Music or videos support on HDD :(

That's exactly how I feel. External is better than internal for storage in this case. It would be nice to to be able to put in a hybrid drive, though.

EDIT: Just realized auto sign-in. Bruiserbear is gonna love that.

Plus you can take your hard drive loaded with games over to a friend's house, plug it in, sign into Live, and play them without having to download them on his/her machine.

Of course it would be better still to offer both, which the PS4 may do, but the Xbox One won't without a hardware redesign.

The way it was handled on 360 I considered a scam, hence why this is a welcome change.
Or did they actually patch in external support for the 360 too and I missed it? I haven't used mine since 2011 or so.

Maybe I should edit my post because I do see how it's easily misinterpreted.

Thats good news. Alot of great software additions. This is one of the things that im liking so far from the XB1. Im hoping Sony finds a better way to get software updates out more often.

I doubt Sony will do this anytime soon, they'll point to the ability to replace the internal HD as the reason, which is fine, you can throw a 1.5TB drive in the PS4 right now, maybe a 2TB model even, I know there's an elusive 2TB 2.5" drive out there that people have experimented with.

Why not have both and just call it a day? Or is that to easy?
