Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

This, there's no such thing as "too big" when it comes to TVs.
Actually there is, you don't want to see a soap opera and wake up the next day with your neck like you've seen a 3 hour tennis match from the first row.

But on top of it all there is visual acuity, objective is sitting within a distance where you don't discern pixels, the so called "retina", at ideal distances we've had it on TV's for ages. (hence why 4K is mostly silly)
Yes. It has higher peak brightness than the x900B for example, which seems to match the w900s brightness on Impulse (according to my memory at least). I compared Impulse on the two of them directly, and the X950 clearly reaches higher brightness levels. It looked phenomenal even in a very bright area. Blacks blend right into the bezel as well. Very beautiful set.

edit: after looking at it, I briefly went through different scenarios in how to justify buying it. lol! Worst part is I could seriously consider it depending on how it's priced early next year.
Thank you for the feedback.

It's unlikely I'll be able to see one functioning over here anywhere soon. (our stores usually have crap selection)

So I got a sony KDL40w600b for the master bedroom.

It was between a Samsung f5000 and eh5005 and the older sony 40inch, think it was 470b.

I'm really blown away by how much TVs have improved over the years. For actual tv watching, an older tv is fine, but my gaming experience is so much better, I'm coming from an old Panasonic HD plasma 42 inch 8 years old and then a sony 40inch LCD 5 years old.

The LED is so much brighter to game on, the image really pops, I paid $2800 Australian for the sony 5 years ago. I paid rm1500 ringget which is about $500 for the w600b. If that's in your price range, go for it.

I'm glad to hear you like it! I just ordered mine, and I'm upgrading from a 27-inch Samsung monitor/TV hybrid (that, even at the time, I thought kinda sucked).

Right now I have my "current" consoles (360,XB1,PS3,PS4,Wii U) hooked up to a 70" Sharp LED/LCD TV. The size is great but the input lag is pretty bad. In fact I would say input lag is pretty bad on all the TV's in my house. I have a 65" Samsung, 55" and 46" Sony. Turning the motion plus and everything else off helps, but fighting games and sports games have a definite lag. I guess I bought the wrong TV's for gaming.

You have to watch out with W8 - it seems only 50" and up are MVA , 42" is IPS like last year

And they also hate diffrent XMR ratios so 50" is faster

The 42W828/829 has a VA panel just like the 50 inches version, but it has passive 3D and no adjustable motionflow.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but i fear it may have more input-lag than the bigger brother (22 ms), so i'm waiting for more data.

Is 55" too big if you're sitting 7 feet away from the screen?

I just got a 60" and sit something like 4-5 feet away, I love it.

BUT be aware, when you sit close to these big sets, you end up hearing fan noise and plasma buzz a lot more easily. ;-;

I sit about 6 feet from my 65”. No fucks were given, I like the immersive feeling of being near a larger screen, that's why I still go see movies in theaters!

Set on getting the 55" Sony W905A, no plasma for me. Guess I'll have to "suffer" through another LCD for another 3-4 years. Hopefully OLED will be mainstreet by then. Forza LG!

According to displaylag.com, the largest TV with an excellent rating is the Sony 65 inch KDL65W850A. None of the stores locally have any more in stock, however. They do have the 70 inch version, but the amazon reviews seem lukewarm.

The lag is only 6ms more, so it's not that big of a deal, but I'd also like good picture quality. I think the only difference is the lack of the Triluminos display? But that seems more like marketing than actual quality.

Are there any newer models that displaylag didn't test yet that are 65 inches or bigger and have a lag of less than 20ms?

W900A if you can get it in Asia or something.

Only available in 55" size in North America though. Thanks Obama.

That's what she said.

The W850A might be the best for you. As long as you don't care about Impulse Mode you should be fine.

Yeah, it's what I want to buy, but I can't find any in stock, and I can't buy the display models because they don't know if they will get more shipments, which means they can't sell the display model yet.

Got my W850A a few weeks ago online from Sony Canada. Loving it, happy hunting

W8 is what I'm going for my 42 inch arrives on Friday I am going to size it up and see if I want/need the 50" if I get the 50 will get the w7 as it's £100 cheaper and I don't care about 3d. god bless 30 day hassle free returns, getting setup for destiny!

The Sony online store might be a good option here.

Boo-urns.

I got an offer to buy a Bravia xbr55850a for $1560 after tax. I'm currently using a 42" Panasonic plasma. What say you GAF?

XBR-65X900A, Any lcd TV that you would say is better than this one in 2014? Only for Movies/Cable. Idc about gaming that much on tv. Got a PC.

^ Panasonic AX800. Easily.

Also Sony X950B according to feedback on this thread.

That TV was kinda turd actually. It was first generation 4K with processing engine caught with it's pants down. Not enough bandwidth for high speed 1080p action (hence it hid that option and imposed not solving a 1080p checkerboard properly).

Ugh, I'm worried that Sony Bravia firmware might be shit. I won't know for sure until it persists, but I'm having a hard time getting my wifi connection to "stick"--that is, for the TV to automatically connect when I turn it on. I think it might extend to the rest of the settings, too, as the tweaks I made to the sound were also reset.

Has anyone heard of this problem, or has it happened to them?

my netflix ap stopped working and I had to reset my tv and deny Sony updates to get it to work again. So far so good.

Hey guys, this is a tiny bit off topic, but I'm hoping people in this thread can help me out. I'm not buying a new TV; I'm choosing between two that I already own.

I currently have these two TV's and I need to get rid of one of them:

1. Pioneer Kuro 4280 (2007, 780p, 42")
2. Panasonic Viera 42U2 (2010, 1080p, 42")

I've loved my Kuro over the years, love that it has so many ports, and of course the picture quality is amazing. However, the fact that it's not 1080p is starting to irk me these days. The Viera is 1080p which is great, but I'm not sure if the display quality is on par with the Kuro, plus it has one less HDMI port.

The big reason I'm having a tough time making this decision is because I'm gaming a lot on my PS4 now. Before, almost all of the content I took in was 720p (PS3, cable TV, etc.) but now with my PS4 and Netfix offering higher HD content, I dunno.

I'm not a tech head, so I'm looking for opinions on which set you guys would stick with.

For the record, I sit 9.5 feet away from the set, so I'm not sure if 1080p would make a huge difference. I've switched back and forth between both sets (unplugging and plugging my PS4 HDMI into both), but I don't have any content that I can look at side-by-side.

Anyway, any input would be appreciated. Cheers!

What about, the best TV that has only 1080p. No 4k. What's the best LED TV from last year that is still available now. (I'm so sad the w900a isn't).

Stay with the Kuro.
At 9+ feet the extra resolution bump shouldn't be noticeable by that much.
Not worth sacrificing the drop in image quality.

Ok so I'm going to and check out the un46f5000 one of my college mates is selling and is this still accurate for determining the panel?

EDIT:Ok maybe not because the official owner's thread has TS01 as a Samsung too. Should read more.

EDIT2:Is it possible to go into PC mode and have it limited RGB for WiiU purposes?

It's the letter after the inches in the service menu denomination:

32H6AF0S - H=Sharp
32R6AF0S - R=AUO
32A6AF0S - A=Samsung

You can also determine if the panel behaves well enough or not by gaming on it, with the TV in gaming mode and looking for transitions between light and dark. FPS's are optimal.

Here's a good example:

Albeit I've seen worse.

Hmmm, not a lot of options in US, I'm afraid.

I'd say the W705B is a good deal, but they are not selling them over there. Sadly same is true for 42W650A's, 32W650A being a whole different beast (and US only got the 32 inch model)

No one other than Sony was focusing on PQ and input lag last year, closest was Panasonic and now they both all but deprecated their 2K offerings.

After doing some quick research, I think I've settled on the Sony KDL40W600B. Can anyone give me any opinions or better recommendations please?

Mine arrived yesterday, and I'm loving it so far. I looked around quite a bit in that price range and it was the most appealing model to me.

Got a 4280XD here as well. And i have 2 LED tvs, 42" LG and 50" LG. Both of which albeit 1080p, offer nothing in the experience the Pioneer achieves at 720p. Both LEDs give subpar colour reproduction, and at similar distances to you, the Pioneer outshines the others and is in my living room connected to all my AV gear.
Now if only i could get my hands on a 50" Pioneer 1080p plasma.

Seriously though, the only thing that i would switch to today is a 50" Panasonic VT50 plasma.

As for playing more 1080p content, it wont matter, i play all my PC games on a GTX 780 at 720p on the Pioneer, looks great.

I have an audio question but figure you guys would know.

What provides better sound quality - HDMI or optical?

I have an Onkyo SR505 receiver which I've always just used the optical inputs, and then ran HDMI from the device straight to the TV for the video. But being an older receiver I'm finding I'm running out of 'modern' inputs. The receiver has 2 HDMI in's which I will have to start using to add more devices - and it just got me wondering if I should be using those anyways.

Optical will be limited to 1.5Mb/s DTS, which will be the core of a bluray DTS master audio stream and honestly sound fantastic on most home setups.

For games though, I'm not sure what each console encodes to - possibly DD5.1. If so, you will probably get better quality from PS3 at least if you use HDMI and send out linear PCM.

Also need to check what formats your receiver supports over optical and HDMI. Older ones may only take LPCM (mine previous one did), and newer ones will support things like DTS-HD over HDMI.

Edit: googling your receiver seems to show it only passes through video/audio over HDMI, it can't decode audio from HDMI and play it through your speakers. So you'll need to use optical as well to get sound through your speakers.

Dont think thats right, that would be quite silly for an AV Receiver. It does passthrough and decoding. Without decoding you wouldnt be able to get the DD/DTS/DTS-HD from the blu ray to the most TV's anyway. Page 23 of manual confirms.

Anyone with thoughts on the panasonic tc-39as530u?

I recently picked one up but I'm somewhat dissatisfied with how it handles motion - there's a bit too much distortion around players in FIFA when the camera pans quickly, for example.

The question is, can I do better? Is there a perceived best (or better) option for a 40" that will be used solely for gaming, and that is less than, say, $600?

I'm considering returning a panasonic tc-39as530u and picking up a Sony KDL40W600B. My primary concern is how it handles motion. Do you have any thoughts?

(If you see my post from above, my issue with the panasonic is the amount of noise/distortion/artifacting/whatever due to quick movement. I see it with players in FIFA when the screen pans quickly; I also see it in Infamous around the main character's head when he moves around.)

Also, is dropping from a 120hz with the panasonic to a 60hz with w600b not a downgrade?

My PS3 should be arriving soon (I just moved across the country) so I'll report back when it does. I've been watching quick movement-free TV and movies, both of which look fantastic.

It was unfortunately quite common for the first and second gen of AVR's equipped with HDMI to not extract the audio at all (basically just acting as an HDMI switch). I don't know if that fits the 505 specifically, but it is not as preposterous a claim as it may seem here in the year 2014. CEM's don't really give a fuck about common sense, I mean they gladly made 1080p TV's with no 1080p inputs and 4k TV's (even PC Monitors) that are limited to 30Hz.

What do you guys suggest in terms of viewing height? I'm in the market for a TV stand right now, and I'm wondering around how high I should be looking for. My TV is 40-inches.

I've got my 60" on a 2 foot stand, it feels a little high. A 40" set would probably fit on there just fine tho.

Source? The 2014 models are supposed to be a major step back from last year.

I know this is a month old, but I felt compelled to follow up on this considering I've spent the last week over researching Sony/Samsung/Vizio/Sharp and just saw it rereading the thread.

After reading that Sony TV's were some of the best for low input lag, I just typed into http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/ Brand: Sony Year: 2014 and the lag range for their TV's were 17-31 ms which according to their site is "Excellent to Great". Personally, I don't know what is considered "good" as when I set my 2007 Samsung to Game Mode it "feels" just as responsive as no lag, but who knows.

Also, rtings.com does TV reviews and although input lag numbers don't match exactly, they are pretty close to confirming displaylag.com's #s http://www.rtings.com/reviews/tv/lcd-led/sony/w800b

I can't comment on Picture Quality or anything else for that matter, it may indeed be a step back, but at least you know the input lag is minimal.

I'm personally on the fence on the plasma Samsung PN8500, 2014 Vizio Model M (closest to dark blacks at a cheap price), or one of the Sony sets. I've never had a Plasma, but I feel I might be falling for the "once you go Plasma, you can never go back" hype, so I'll spend the next couple of weeks checking it out.

Alright, this thread is really overwhelming to me lol. I'm moving into my own place and I want a decent tv for my living room. I'm thinking 46-50" LED or LCD. Low response time. It doesn't have to necessarily be a Smart TV. My budget is like $650ish

I'm currently gaming on one of these: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0039RRCJ8/?tag=neogaf0e-20

any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'll post impressions of what it's actually like to game on the thing, but Sony's 48inch W60 might work. The black levels are excellent.

According to this page from the manual, only he US version of the 505 has HDMI inputs, and they only work as a switch, it does not decode audio over HDMI - you need to use optical/coax for audio.

It isn't uncommon in older receivers, just as HDMI was coming out. My first HDMI equipped receiver supported LPCM only, not DD etc. it also didn't pass 1080p/60.
