Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

watched some videos about it, still hyped and loving the idea, but the shooting sound is getting really annoying after ~30s. I think they are at least partially responsible for my headache right now. But it's pretty early so I hope they'll adjust this

People is fast these days

are these actual plush dolls?

DAMN

This is still my surprise of all the E3 conferences this year. I knew a new Platinum game was coming, Project Beast been leaked etc. When this was first shown, for the first 10 seconds with the orange squid, I have set a rather low expectation.

The game looks better every time I look for videos, I also love shooters which require some teamwork and thought outside of just killing the other team.

Old maybe? I'm not taking the time to check.

Edit: Vaguely remember it from the day one reveal hype day. Oh wells, still amusing for a repost. :)

Just watching these Nintendo Treehouse vids... fuck man. This looks pretty deep already and they're only using SMGs, none of the class /alt weapons stuff have been unveiled yet and it's a single map.

It's a game where territory control actually means something, where in-game stealth is a viable option without just making you completely invisible, with this beautiful sense of movement and of verticality (i mean you can HIDE in the wall patches I'm pretty sure)... Trying to figure out if you're invisible in other people's ink as well (even with the movement penalties)

Not really getting the people who are saying it looks like an eshop title or something... I think there's huge potential here.

Did they say anything regarding voice chat?

They didn't confirm or deny it they just said that there would be some sort of communication possible.
They highlighted that the fact that everyone sees the map on their gamepad allows everyone to make quick tactical decisions, which is true, but it seemed to indicate, as always that they're not really hot on full voice-chat.

They also talked about possible more classic shooter controls, and some sort of character customization.

Edit : typo :P

man, I don't have much hope... :(
voice chat is a must for strategy in this game IMO...

I like how they handle stealth in this game. It is a very powerful tactic if you want to kill enemy players without dying BUT the game isn't about that. If you just camp you will lose simply because that is not the objective (neither you will gain score for that so there is no point at all). Then again sometimes doing an ambush like that might be the best thing to do even the objective in mind.

The depth in this game is going to be insane.

Join me for this game, Ponpo. Let's play this and Zelda Musou. I'll convert #gafgundam to #gafWiidom

I like the idea behind this, and it looks pretty fun, but at the same time it looks like it could get boring really fast. I mean I got bored at the 5 minutes mark watching a match. It also seems shallow.

I don't get the shallow comment. Seems like the mechanics are very simple but very deep to me, and I consider that the best kind of game design. So much room for strategy when using squid mode.

Also, they haven't even unveiled the vast majority of the game yet. The demo station only has a couple of weapons and one game mode.

They need to make a lot more modes...which I'm sure they will. Some sort of a single player would be nice too.

I'm really loving the fan art. I didn't expect that. There's some great art out there.

I played it, and it's not that amazing, however, I am not Nintendo's target audience.

It's definitely not a shooter game. You spend a lot of time just painting stuff, and killing people didn't really seem to matter as much. In fact, you could strategically use death to respawn behind the other team and win that way.

Controls were terrible OR gimmicky. I'm sure they'll allow more controls, but aiming with tilt as the main method of aiming is SO BAD! You could only move left and right with the right analog, no up and down. Definitely uses tilt.

I destroyed the other team getting like 15 kills in a the second match that we got to play after I got used to the controls. Even then, the final result was almost even, just slightly favouring my team in terms of percentage of painting the level. So I really feel like this isn't too much PVP as it is just passively shooting up floors and walls.

I do enjoy the squid mode of travel and loading up ink from squid mode, but the overall mechanics available feels really shallow that I can definitely imagine myself getting tired of the game real fast. They definitely need more that painting mode.

After playing a bunch of indie games that are like this quirky shooter kind of game, and they were free, I guess my opinion of this new IP isn't in high regards. It needs more content for sure.

i played it too, and while killing people isn't what nets you points, it does matter in the long run. i likened it more to something like team fortress 2, where the main objective is capturing/defending a base, or retrieving a flag. there's deathmatch in tf2 (and there may be death matches in this game too), but the key gameplay isn't who gets the most kills, and i really like it that way.

furthermore, i noticed the guy next to me was having issues with the controller, and i recall the person at the booth telling him that the motion/tilt control can be turned off, but i don't know if it was available for that demo. maybe someone can confirm tomorrow. nintendo's been pretty good at having a variety of controller options this generation, so i don't see why they would limit that (especially if they have local multiplayer).

what was fun for me was seeing a real grudge match taking place in the middle of the map while i infiltrated their base and started painting/capturing the shit out of their spawn area. we only lost by a single point, but i was the top-scoring player.

Thanks for the impressions, sounds like it just didn't click for you. Did you know you can turn off motion controls though? Sounds like that may have affected your opinion.

Can't wait to get my hands on this, I love shooters but got really bored of the ones that keep coming out. Ghosts was the first COD I haven't got since COD4, just bored of the same old same old. This really looks like an interesting twist, really hope they go crazy with different maps. Feel like it could do with some variety in the setting as well? Would love a map by a beach or something with water randomly washing up and taking paint off so both teams go ah shit and have to paint like crazy again.

They're currently demoing one game mode on one map with one weapon type. They have already confirmed multiples of all of those.

In one of the Treehouse segments they showed turning the Gyro on so it is an option.

I'm pretty sure the game isn't solely about killing folks like in Call of Duty or Battlefield. The point seems to be a good mix of both. Controlling and taking over territory with ink seems to be first and foremost in how to win. Killing another player is just a secondary thing that can be a part of the overall strategy. Going in with the mindset of simply killing players is the wrong approach to a game like this.

Can I be Zelda? If so, deal.

Well as much as I think this game looks cute, I think the single game mode could get boring fast. I should read more E3 impressions.

That is true...for the only game mode currently being demoed: "Turf War". I am sure there will be a deathmatch style mode as well.

That's true. I was more thinking about the game they're currently showing. It will be interesting to see what other modes they're gonna add in.

No, I'm Zelda. Or Impa. You can be boring Link. Why would you want to play this singleplayer, what are you, some kinda friendless plebe?

I swear if Nintendo doesn't do a Shinryaku Ikamusume tie-in with this in Japan, they're dumb.

No I'm Zelda she looks like Orie >=(

And I said single mode not single player mode! Painting floors could get boring, even with map variety. I'd rather be a friendless plebe with regards to this, though. I have visions of people turning this cutie game into something way too serious and competitive and yelling at me on voice chat (._. )

I played it and loved it. The controls felt great and the overall mechanics were really solid. Everybody I saw seemed to be having a blast too. It was pennant the second most popular game behind smash.

Play with friends rather than anyone and only befriend nice people.

what if they upped the team amount?

8 vs 8

or 4 vs 4 vs 4 vs 4

I would like this if they could have up to 32 players on a single map would be chaos :)

maybe add in some ink themed vehicles??, a tps battle field like game vibe :)

or no vehicles, just up the team count.

Squidfield: Inkline

I was a bit skeptical about this game at first but after watching a few videos it's starting to grow on me.
The 4v4 miffs me a bit. I was hoping for bigger teams.
I'm sure they tried it with different numbers though.

People who play it enjoy it and there's always a line for it.
But no one wants to be the journalist to like a "kiddy kid shooter".

True statement, sadly.

Also, it should be noted that Splatoon has also likely been "lost in the shuffle" with so many other games and news items from Nintendo. No excuse, though.

There already is a vehicle -- the squid.

I doubt it's accidentally "lost in the shuffle". It was the last big game they showed on the Digital Event, they have demoed it extensively on Treehouse, it's at the very top of the page on their E3 site, and it's overall their big new IP. They are definitely promoting it the best they can. If other press aren't covering it, it's intentional. Outside of Smash, Splatoon is their game with the most presence at E3.

When I saw this I thought it would be some crappy downloadable title but the gameplay shown and the treehouse event has made me want this bad. It looks so fun, and it has some cool concepts and meta game.

capture the flag where you drop the flag immediately if you touch the ground/walls that are the opponent's paint

control point where you need to fill a giant bucket with paint (so you are occupied while the opponent can attack you)

racing game 2v2v2v2 each team has 1 squid racer and 1 guy painting up hte track so their racer can go faster

and that's just off the top of my head

edit: an assassin multiplayer mode like assassin's creed perhaps?

How about Blockbusters?

Large square arena (with obstacles, no straight lines from side to side).

Orange plays north to south; blue plays west to east. Objective is to paint a single unbroken line of your colour from one end to the other.

You score a point for every second your link is unbroken.

Nintendo's ink-shooter Splatoon: the most fun game at E3 | Wired
Wired said:
Nintendo's new arena shooter may just be the most fun game at this year's E3. Sure, Call of Duty is more technically impressive, and the likes of Ori and the Blind Forest are more artistic, but for pure, uncompromising fun? Well, Splatoon is going to be hard to beat.
Wired said:
It's all terrific... well, fun. Splatoon is bright and cheery, and even though you can shoot rival team members, or "die" from their ink shots, it's never more than an annoyance -- you'll respawn and be straight into the ink-spraying anarchy. If the wider game expands on the excellent map we played, Nintendo could well have their best new party game since Smash Bros on its hands.
Sounds goooood.
