Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

Someone should send this thread and the "best gameplay at E3" thread to Nintendo's Twitter or something- they should know that a lot of people are excited for this game and steal some of the ideas you guys have come up with. Paint shotgun! Target mode! Squid Girl Smash Bros. appearance!

I'll repost what I posted in the other thread.

It's really heartwarming to see all the love for Splatoon, a Nintendo shooter of all things. When I look at that game I see potential; if Nintendo go all out with game modes and weapon types, it could be something special.

The paint shooter/territory concept doesn't look to be truly original, though. Take a look at Mindware Studios' Color Wars from 4 years ago and there are immediate similarities:

It will be the squid mechanic and general Nintendo polish that will potentially elevate this to greatness.

I really need to stop reading gaming articles. A gem from Arstechnica:

To be clear, Splatoon does use the Wii U GamePad as a controller, but its primary gimmick is that the map appears on the touchscreen, something you'll barely glance at while playing this high-action game.

Even better, the headline: Preview: Smash Bros., Splatoon ignore Wii U GamePad for the better

The cherry on the cake:
At the very least, the foundation has been laid for one heck of a fight when the Wii U version launches in "Winter 2014," one that will leave the Wii U GamePad collecting dust.

To summarize this nonsense: "Collecting dust" is trending again, Arstechnica are uninformed, probably didn't play Splatoon and therefore don't know that you aim with the gyro sensor, the map is essential to your tactic and you need it to launch yourself from the spawn point to any other point. /r

"Off TV doesn't exist and thus can't be awesome. Anyway I never play games while watching TV."Or something like that, right?

It just boggles my mind how people can press the "Publish" button without checking their facts. I'd get my ass kicked to hell and back for doing something like this. The last time I made a small mistake, I mixed up the copyright for a picture, I had to pay a nice fine (hundreds of Euros). Yet, those guys throw words around without checking the facts and nobody cares. I need to get my ass out of Europe so nobody can sue me anymore :/

will this be the general thread where splatoon stuff is posted ? I am very interested in the game and wish to continue talking about it

Until we need to make a new thread or we get to Splatoon OT || Press ZL to Squid, seems like it.

I really need to stop reading gaming articles.

There's a reason why I try my best to avoid the gaming media, instead choosing to try to get the facts myself now. Lack of integrity, fact checking, and occasional overlap between "journalism" and fanboyism is enough for me to completely ignore the lot unless they have demonstrated to me that they know what they are doing.

The more I think about it the more excited I get. The mindgame potential with disappearing ink squids and the changing ink-splatter environments alone are insane. That's not even talking about traversal.

you have been saying what I wanted to say all thread, I only wish I could talk more about it, but I had work all week

I hope they try to include more movement options later.
Based around you standing on your ink. Instead of the super duper jump , maybe just a high jump or maybe a quick dash in case you don't wish to dive in the ink.

I also hope they include more types of levels, I get a jet set radio kinda vibe from this game for some reason. It would be cool if there more levels like a city at night or something like that, and I really liked the music.

New IP from Nintendo and watch how the media ignores it

Nintendo better market it make the people want it

There are quite a few articles about Splatoon:

'Splatoon' Brightens Up Nintendo's Wii U Lineup With Multi-Player Madness
The curious case of Splatoon, Wii U's dollop of squidly joy
Nintendo's ink-shooter Splatoon: the most fun game at E3

German press:

SPLATOON: Nintendo kündigt innovativen Multiplayer-Shooter für Wii U an (Splatoon: Nintendo announces innovative multiplayer-shooter for Wii U)
Splatoon - Origineller Multiplayer-Shooter für die Wii U (Splatoon - Inventive multilpayer-shooter for Wii U)
Splatoon - Farbenfroher Multiplayer-Shooter für Wii U angekündigt (Splatoon - colourful multiplayer-shooter for Wii U announced)

And some more.

I think now would be a good time to put pressure on Nintendo to include in game chat. I have a feeling they're gonna leave it out and I think that would be a huge misstep.

I don't have the link but i've read the voice chat will be there.

edit: but maybe just between friends.

I think there were four Treehouse demos? There were two with just the treehouse players, one with Sato from the dev team playing, and one with the 3 main devs playing. Anyone have links to the last two?

Will there be a way to fully enjoy this in local multiplayer? It does sound like the Gamepad requirement for control makes it likely to be online-only, which is generally something I don't have any interest in, as much fun as this looks.

I'm getting this feeling too. I asked my mate next to me if he would buy this full price and we both were thinking, 'not without more.'

Giant Robot, Project Guard, Star Fox, they all seem way too early for a year away.

I can't remember where they said it, but they talked about different maps and modes. I'm not too worried about this game lacking content, although I get a feeling we won't hear much more about it until next year. Maybe in the October Direct, although I feel like that'll be more focused on all the games coming out this year. I expect we'll get new game modes and stuff in February

Friend team chat is likely to be in. There seems to be enough visual information between the screen and gamepad that voice chat between random players won't be "needed" to work as a team. I've always felt voice chat wasn't "needed" for shooters in general. If one is simply observant of what is happening in their field of vision and the mini-map it's easy to end up working as a team or partnering up with someone. That's how I've always played Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty. I find voice chat actually to be distracting. Not saying having it is bad just it isn't as a mandatory as some make it out to be.

How about Blockbusters?

Large square arena (with obstacles, no straight lines from side to side).

Orange plays north to south; blue plays west to east. Objective is to paint a single unbroken line of your colour from one end to the other.

You score a point for every second your link is unbroken.
Good idea!

Nintendo just posted this video.

The kids seemed really into it. Mario couldn't even distract them!
this makes for a great commercial geared towards those who don't care about Mario

Don't recall these posted here, so here I go. :)

When I saw the paint roller weapon, one of my first thoughts was how a 3D version of that Mystical Ninja paint mini-game (and Tron Light Cycle rip-off/homage) would play out, especially with more than 2 players vying to cover the ground with ink without touching each other's ink trails or walls/obstacles. Especially when teams try to fake out each other and cause rivals to fall into traps.
Another good idea!

Wait a minute, I got this: Qix homage mode where you paint around an area to enclose it, with the negative space automatically filed with your color of paint. But there's also a hunter player out to get you. This could work well for larger maps.
Also a good idea!

Loved the metallic paint and glow in the dark paint suggestions as well. But I feel like we need more ideas that also take advantage of the squid part of the gameplay, and not just the painting.

Actually, I don't care if there's no extra content (there will be of course). I'd buy it anyway :)

oh okay. For some reason I thought octopuses didn't. I figured if they did I probably would have eaten it.

There actually is such a thing as Octopus Ink Soup...

I just got back from a session of Wind Waker. I can't understand people who have gripes about gyro-augmented control... It's so precise and intuitive, the way it works in WW. Do big movements with right stick, quick adjustments with a flick of your wrist.

I am a bit concerned that gyro is for tilt only and not side-side as well.

Also pro-controllers have no gyro so that means player 2 will lose out.

I can see the story mode being in the style of De Blob, where the main goal of each level is to paint and bring life to the city, with various missions popping up as you progress.

I didn;' like how long each level dragged on for in De Blob, so I'd be happy to see someone else take another crack at that gameplay theme.

This game looks incredible, and it's one of the main reasons I'm thinking about picking up a Wii U. New EAD IP is never a bad thing.

This looks like a lot of fun. If only Nintendo had things like this available at launch, the Wii-U might be in better shape now. Will buy.

Nintendo would be insane not to include Wiimote pointing as a control option. It's a scarily perfect fit for this game.

I propose

Splatoon OT || Squids are better than CODs

As much as I like pointer controls I don't think they would fit here. You aren't shooting in a straight line. The paint/ink is arcing and the goal isn't to kill other players so really accurate aiming doesn't like it would be required. Could be wrong and it would be idea. However if this is meant to push the gamepad (from the map and getting back into the action really fast) I don't see them adding it for that reason.

Really looking forward to this. Looked like a lot of fun, and I just really like the idea of playing a great multiplayer shooter that isn't about killing, blood shed, and all that crap.

No idea is ever truly original. The third person shooter genre is old as dirt too, but iterative design processes are what make these games feel fresh. If it was just a re-skinned Color Wars, nobody would have cared. But it's definitely not that. It's a combination of components that make the game design unique.
