Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

if you break it down splatoons done well. top MP shooter (not sure what no mans sky would be), its 4th if you discount ones with no gameplay (though bloodborne had leaked play). 4th for first party, 2nd for first party gameplay. dunno if can think of more spin :p

Seriously Splatoon was probably the biggest suprise of E3 2014 for me. After they showed the mechanics of the game I was instantly sold.

I thought this was a MP only type of game. Never knew they have a single player mode in the works too.

Either way, looks great!

I hope it has lots of stats and such, Nintendo's own take on the shooter genre.

I think $40 retail with dlc map packs later as well as free update events like the ones the poster mentioned above should be good.
With the events, you unlock new costumes and accessories.

I've got to get this fan art my sister did uploaded somewhere. She drew an inkling with an afro-tuft of hair and I'm like "I would TOTALLY buy cosmetic DLC for an Afro-ling".

I don't expect it, but I want Sakurai to add the Inklings to Smash Bros. as post-launch character DLC.

We already know from the third Gematsu leak that post-launch character DLC is planned. And we have little reason to doubt the Gematsu leak at this point: All of the newcomers have panned out, including the exact name "Mii Fighters" as seen in the third leak.

If DLC was already Sakurai's plan when the leaker got his intel, then chances are they've already started conceptualizing the DLC and perhaps even working on it (separate from refining and balancing the core roster). The question, then, is what characters they might put together. Cut characters would seem simplest, but there is the possibility of all-original content.

Adding the Inklings would work wonders for Splatoon as a new IP, endearing the the Inklings to a huge audience. If timed correctly, to coincide with Splatoon's launch in 2015, it could translate to direct sales of Splatoon, as well.

The Inklings also seem like they'd work exceptionally well as characters in Smash Bros. Granted, the ink splatter probably couldn't linger on the stage that long due to memory restrictions, but temporary splashes would work just as well. Slow down other players, disappear into your paint and reappear elsewhere, rocket-jump for a recovery, melee with the paint-roller, throw ink-grenades and fire off ink-shots, cyclones, etc. The Inkling could be available in both male and female forms, with all of the team colors from Splatoon.

If we don't see them as DLC, I'm sure we'll see them in Smash Bros. 5. As combat-oriented EAD characters, they're ready-made for Smash.

It's possible, but I doubt it. However, whenever smash 5 gets announced, I see no reason for the inklings not to be included as part of the playable characters. Assuming that Splatoon does well by Nintendo standards of course.

Wonder how people would respond if they paid to play the Inklings in Smash as DLC,, then Sakurai says he's putting them into the next game as part of the core roster. If the next Smash is several years off anyway (perhaps if Nintendo's console cycle shortens due to lol Wii U), then I wouldn't mind in this scenario.

I was thinking about UT2004's Onslaught mode and how enormous the maps are (same goes for Tribes, though fast travel's different from using vehicles to cover ground). A similar mode for Splatoon would be hard to design, but I bet it'd be graphically impressive and would provide variety.

I think it's likely that this game will have a CoD4 like unlock system. Nintendo LOVES unlocks and it'd add a bit of incentive for people to play the multiplayer longer. This also probably fits into Nintendo's philosophy of figuring games out one step at a time and not overwhelming new players with options. As you gain "levels" you'd gain guns as well as customization options for your character.

Not sure I'd want that. The number of weapons they'd need to introduce to cover all tactical and strategic possibilities would be fairly small for an unlock progression to feel relevant. After that, they'd have to market variations on each specialty one of the weapons already satisfies.

There a good chance for unlockables in this game, but I doubt that the weapons will be one of those things. Probably going to do mostly with customization, and maybe stages I think.

I scoured youtube for good moments but in the end the Treehouse stream was still the most interesting. Let me know if these are too big (20 MB, 13.4 MB), I'll change them to links.

This game is nuts. There are already so many strategies intuitive to the game's core mechanics. Seems like another game that could use the MKTV treatment.

By the way, is this footage taken from the Devs vs. Treehouse match?

INSANE. The more I watch, the more I need.

You know what would be great for this game?

Being able to jump higher/faster as a squid and then maintain that momentum after switching back to a human midair.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Maybe a charge jump mechanic? Hold jump, and when you release you fly higher, but if you want to get as high as possible you have to build speed/use ramps effectively.

I've seen some instances where in squid form the player manages to jump clear over the grate that you normally need to pass through. Mostly on that ramp leading up to the grate spot but I think I saw it once on a flat surface. Might be a glitch.

No, I like Splatoon's movements because it's relatively grounded and smooth. The last thing I want is for people to high jump all around the arena.

Of course I'm also usually not a fan of shooters and movement in multiplayer tend to be very jerky and random from my limited experience.

I agree. Ground movement tactics are already robust, and high mid-air movement wouldn't work anyway since the squirt gun has very limited vertical range. Too easy to cheese.

I wouldn't classify movement in this game as grounded. I think it'll be a lot of splatterhopping/squidhopping all over the place. Could be wrong though.

EDIT: Actually you can superjump to your teammates at any time right? It'd be insane to see in an objective based mode- Like let's say you have all four of your guys spread out and you each start spreading ink in places. That spreads the enemy troops out to cover every entrance. Then everyone superjumps to one dude's location and makes a 4 person push that route.

The goal wouldn't be height. It would be to have a way to shoot and move quickly at the same time if you're moving through your own ink. If they have loadouts that affect the movement of the character, this could be a thing. It would allow for a more technical style of play, like the scout in TF2.

But you know, the problem with getting carried away about this is that it inevitably leads to disappointment.

Anything that allows for more movement is better.

I totally think that should be in. Getting around the arena in a very efficient matter is one of the most important parts of shooters.

And being abel to propel myself off walls could make that easier.

Also I would assume that type of stuff would be higher level play anyway, to which my response would be git gud. But the game doesn't exist yet , so ya know. Preemptive git gud

edit: also isn't their footage of the inklings going up a plank then being boosted into air, apparently there is some type momentum type stuff already in the game. Dudes are going to figure out with in minutes how to wall jump or some shit.

Between this and Steel Diver: Sub Wars, Nintendo EAD has been doing amazing new things to one of the oldest 3D video game genres (that is, shooters, particularly FPS/TPS)!

But you can already move quickly and shoot at the same time using splatter jumping in the various gifs shown.

Splatoon's primary innovation has to be the same-ink hide/traversal mechanic. I think a lot of games have painted before but nothing has had the benefits attached to area of splatter, afaik

I've recently started watching videos of this after seeing all the great fan art and I have to say this game really does look amazing. And the concept behind the game mechanics is simple and intuitive, you can understand it and start the meta game almost immediately.

on another topic:
some people mentioned keeping your speed from a squid jump and that doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I think the game is fine as is. It would lead to players constantly jumping around for the speed boost and would destroy some of the great things we've seen so far. The game looks to be at an almost perfect pace right now. I think the guys making this know what they are doing.

I'm sure the speed will be capped. The main benefit people are hoping for is for it to be a an advance method of movement that's faster than just gunning an area and swimming through the paint.

When this game arrives Splatoon TV needs to happen. MKTV is godtier and it will be for this game to. 60 seconds highlight reels of amazing stunts and kills? Color me interested ;-)

This keeps everyone on the same playing field tho, and shifts the focus towards strategy.

Since they're hosted on GfyCat you can actually share the leaner WebM versions here and here. Although even those are larger than I could get them (around 3MB). WebMs are definitely the best alternative.

Agreed completely. They need to go all out for this. Just seeing what people have come up with on the show floor makes me feel like I'm already bad at it.

I think we'll see *something* in that vein. It's very, very clear from the way people like Miyamoto have talked that they are aware of the huge potential for viral things like the Luigi Death Stare, and the impact of things like MKTV. Nintendo clearly have an interesting push & pull with what seems to be a desire to open things up in that respect, and a conservatism that dislikes surrendering control in large part to the community. They seem to be heading in the direction of striking a fair balance, so it will be interesting to see what that means for games like Splatoon.

We need a spectator mode for both games.

One thing they have to adjust is the sound of the guns. If you watch a video with a direct sound capture it gets annoying real quick. Just adjust the volume a little.

They should do a competition for the gaming media. That could be hilarious.

Polygon vs. Kotaku. Splash!

can you imagine how bad theyd be? :p But they could do that for like an additional reviewing/previewing event, though Id imagine people who didnt win would have sour grapes >.>

edit: the thought i was having was, if you got a fairly srs/pro group of people playing, itll help show people who think they are too cool for school that its a good game objectively.
