Official Destiny Alpha Withdrawal Thread

Welp, I'm a little peeved.

Preordered Destiny on the PSN store a few days back in preparation. Took a look at the countdown timer... "Oh great, it unlocks at 12 PST".

That's 60 bucks down the drain. Looks like I'm still waiting in line at a Best Buy to get my copy at midnight. Yay~ -_-

I thought their pre-loading stuff would unlock at midnight the day of? That seems really odd; enough so that I'd give their CS a call.

Also, how is that $60 "down the drain"? Midnight releases are great and all (if you don't have work the next day) but you'll likely be playing this game for a long, long time. Waiting 12 hours (if it really won't unlock until Noon PST the day of) is still only... twelve hours. Save that extra $60, or put it towards another game. No need to throw $120 at Destiny on launch day, fellow GAFer.

Its 3am. I live on the East Coast, so basically I can go to a store, get the game, come back, play for 2 hours before the game unlocks. It especially sucks since I planned on taking launch day off so sleep wasn't going to be a factor.

It basically makes any sort of digital purchase pointless for something I want to play at midnight. I'll be lining up at brick and mortar regardless.

You would pay an extra $60 to play a game 2 hours earlier?

The game may not be playable at all until midnight PST. It's an online game, after all. So you could be sitting around waiting 2-3 hours with your physical copy, unable to play.

That "would" be kind of stupid. Since literally you'd be buying a game that is broken at launch. I don't recall any MMO's doing such.

Well, If its two hours of gameplay, sure.

Some online games go up at midnight ET, others PT. D3 was PST I believe(not that it mattered with how the servers were when it launched, but yeah...) I had my copy of D3 installed and ready to go over an hour before it went live as I'm in the central time zone.

ANyone else notice the descriptive change from 'raids' to 'a raid' from Bungie since the alpha?

Yup, only one folks.

Yep, sounds like only one raid. That's a bit disappointing to hear and makes me think the game won't be as big as I initially hoped. I assume we'll see some raid DLC shortly afterwards though.

Reaper of Souls was playable at midnight EDT.

Weren't matchmaking and multiplayer for the Halo games up days before?

Vanilla D3 went live midnight pacific: https://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/5203659/Diablo_III_Midnight_Launch_Events-4_25_2012

Alpha times for Destiny were also done in Pacific time. Of course, it was already running before it went public and it lingered for a bit afterward, but the fact they've been using Pacific time isn't changed by that.

Edit: It's not as though I'm saying for certain it won't be up until midnight Pacific in general, only that there's been absolutely nothing that hints otherwise. And that there's precedent for online games to go live using Pacific rather than Eastern. Perhaps we'll learn more in time.

Its not really good business practices. Midnight launches for games you can't play because reasons. Might as well not have midnight launches if 3/4 of the US and Canada can't play until the wee hours of the morning.

Meanwhile, those on the other side of the country often aren't very happy that everyone else can get ahead of them "just because". It goes both ways.

Remember, I'm over here as well, so I'd also benefit from being able to run to the store and get in 1-2 hours early so I'm certainly not against it =p I'm just making a point here.

Wish they would confirm they are or are not doing a special / collectors edition. What would you like to see?

I'd like:

Some sort of statue, like three guardians or the traveller or a fallen captain

Soundtrack

Mini encyclopidia of races, enemies, weapons and locations

Art book

Making of documentary

Not too bothered about exclusive armour or weapons but would love a digital code for the game itself so I don't have to get a physical copy if I want the fancy stuff.

Well, I mean, it'd be one thing if retail stores had to wait until 3am to release things. But the fact that they don't makes it redundant. There's no point to digital transactions if you aren't on the west coast. (well, for people who want to play at minute 0 I mean)

I'd buy a sculpture/statue of The Traveller suspended above the last city so hard.

Sorry if this has been answered before, but are beta codes supposed to come at a later date if you pre-ordered online on the PS Store? I got the standard order email receipt, but no mention of a beta code ... from what I've read, others who have pre-ordered through stores have already received their codes ...

I think I read you will get a notification through the system itself. I know in the alpha, people got notifications through the console itself that it was downloading automatically.

Except that it's an online game, where even if you have a copy, you can't get in without the servers being up. They're the only games those on the west coast have a chance to be on a level playing field at launch. It also gives full control where even if a copy is leaked, it's completely useless.

There's also the fact that, even on the east coast, buying digitally still saves you a trip to the store. The value of that varies from person to person, but to say there's no point to anyone is a bit much, I think.

Edit: Anyway, I think we've drifted a bit off topic. Looking forward to the beta and hoping they get the centipede error I was hit with during the alpha and its kin fixed by then.

Sounds good to me ... was semi-worried seeing others got their codes already ...

Only ooe raid???? Da fuck Bungie? No nickel and diming please
Depends on how challenging and how big that raid is. They are making it sound like a colossal challenge. I just hope it's possible to save progress through it. I'm a dad who works full time and have a lot if commitments. The most I can every play is about 3-4 hours straight. It's sounding much longer than that.

Yeah, all this talk of 6-7 hours is surely to long?

For a super hard uber challenge I think 3 hours seems about right. I remember games of L4D that lasted for more than an hour got to feel like a real chore, despite loving the game. There's just no way I'll find a 6 hour block these days.

The servers will be up before Midnight PST. The game would come crashing down immediately if they waited for 12am in one specific timezone to open them up. Thousands upon thousands of users logging in at the exact same time would be disastrous.

Perhaps they already have other raids completed and/or in the works, but are holding them back for updates/dlc to stretch out the end game.

I won't belive there will be only one raid. This game is so awesome and Bungie know how to make addicting game, either in PVE or PVP.
People would get really mad if there would be only one raid for 6 people and the rest were only strikes for group of 3.
I hope there will be much more in the game, not in the later DLC's.
I think everybody knows that this game will be a real money-maker with whole micro-transactions, but please Bungie, don't cut out cool stuff like raid and sell it in separate DLC...

1 raid would be fucking awful, as a matter of fact, I expected strikes to be with 6 people cuz thats what was shown at e3 last year, I assumed I could play most of the game with a group of 6.

It seems the Guardians are actually dead: http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/28ggf1/our_guardians_we_are_dead/

Yeah, groups of 3 are good for exploration but for Strikes I also hoped for minimum 4 or 6 persons. During alpha I've got many friends to play with, but we had make tough decisions like who can go and who needs to find someone else. I hate stuff like this really bad.
I know they won't change groups of 3 in Destiny, probably in Destiny 2 which should be focused only on next-gens and forget the past-gen.

COD does it every year

I haven't played the last couple of CoD's at launch, but MW, WAW, BO1, and MW2 did not wait for one timezone before turning on their online servers (on consoles). People went out at midnight in their own timezone, came home and started playing with zero problems.

I don't even think CoD uses central servers for their console games, unless somehow Live's servers count.

Strikes have always been described as 1 fire team, i.e. 3 guardians, so I wouldn't get your hopes up. I think it's a deliberate decision rather than a technical limitation. The want each guardian to feel vital.

No, there's been a very obvious shift to talking about 'a raid' in the most recent interviews so I think we can safely say its only one - probably that Glass Vault thing in the Jason Jones video.

I'm happy with one, especially if its going to be a 6 hour epic. Really hope they allow that to be broken into smaller chunks, but somehow I doubt it. It's meant to be super hard-core right?

Where the shit are people getting the 1 raid thing from?

Is it from the Angry Joe interview? Its clear what he meant by one raid was "one of the raids"

Wasn't here someone from Bungie here? It would be nice to here some more infos about this raid(s).
I know they won't tell us the truth until the realease of the game, but damn...one raid?!
I was hoping for like minimum 4 or 5 really long and hard raids for 6 persons.
At least one raid for each planet :(

Joe asked about raids, and Deej responded with "we have a raid." So it certainly sounds like there is only one.

Well, maybe he said that by mistake or wasn't really paying attention to what he says :)
At least I hope so... I was counting so much on raids and the info with only one raid just kinda let me down :(
Don't get me wrong, Destiny will blow me away and I will spend with it hundreds of hours, but it would be nice to have something more to do in end-game, than just one raid :)

Here is the interview with Angry Joe if someone didn't saw it:
