A video like that easily quiets people who just want things like they used to be, but it doesn't change the facts, really. That is, it would be more interesting to have the dialogue equally split between snake and ocelot in a scene like that. Kojima just doesn't seem capable of working it out like that...or he refuses to. There's plenty of room for the facial animations to say things the character shouldn't have to, while developing snake as a character through dialogue that isn't just exposition dump or questions on a subject. We'll see when it's finally out, but I'm not holding my breath that he's learned his lesson on that front. I expect him to give BB the same heavy handed, preachy dialogue he always does when he finally gives the main character a chance to talk at length.

I think that it will all balance itself out by the game's end. I think Snake will ask a ton of questions as he wakes up from his coma, not say much until he finds Kaz, then give at least one "We are Diamond Dogs." speech a day, every day for the rest of his life. I think it's reasonable to expect the same "ratio" (if you will) of Snake dialogue to support character monologue as we got in Ground Zeroes, you know?

I was talking about the David Hayter Simulator vid. It's funny :)

:) ?

Simulator vid?

i had no idea that aizuchi existed until that video. that completely explains why we've had to deal with the whole "blah blah blah metal gear" - "metal gear?" style dialogue in mgs for years, and i'm glad it's finally fucking gone.

By the way, did you notice the Mother Base staff limit?

AP1v8RN.png

Looks like it is 50 for each unit, was it 50 in Peace Walker?

Probably placeholder. Peace Walker's Combat Unit was double the size of the rest, and pretty much the main income for GMP.

Yeah, that's awesome haha. I hope he's interesting during his radio dialogue, though and not reduced to a generic radio contact. Like, I hope we hear some interesting radio dialogue from him.

Ocelot as a radio contact is fantastic. If they add the same amount of briefing tapes as they did in Peace Walker for Kaz, we are in for a treat for sure!

Very possible, maybe the unit size will increase as Mother Base grows?

That also explains all the "hai"s the woman said while talkin to Kojima.

Fucking gone?
Am I doing it right?

That vid is hilarious. It should be pointed out though, it's not like Snake repeating statements in the form of a question is David Hayter's fault. He has to read what he's given and try to do the best he can with it, which is probably frustrating considering he himself writes for a living as a hollywood screenwriter, so he probably would have preferred the character to be a bit more subdued himself. He's mentioned many times in the past though, he's been denied when he requests to say something differently and he has to stick to the script almost 100%.

And it's not like the scripts were written that way just to make up for David Hayter being unable to emote either, it's probably like that in the japanese version as well and Akio Otsuka is still there dubbing over. This should all be obvious but it does feel sometimes like he's the scapegoat for the Snake character not seeming very bright by fans, when a lot of it's due to Kojima's script and how he talked doen to the player. He feels more comfortable I suppose now that he has a hollywood actor doing the facial capture to convey things, but it's not like that was absolutely required for him to tone that down.

I think the biggest problem was when Kojima fired Jeremy Blaustein, Hayter/Snake was awesome with MGS1's localization.

There is also the fact that Solid Snake is based off of Plisken from Escape from NY who also has a habit of asking questions by repeating what others just said.

I posted this a long time ago last year when everyone was complaining about the horse stealth, I made a mock codec conversation of how it would probably be explained, this is how your usual codec conversation goes:

Ocelot: Ah, Boss I see you're riding that new horse.

Snake/Big Boss: Yeah, it's pretty handy getting around this rough terrain.

Ocelot: Indeed, but you know you can use a horse for more than simple transportation.

Snake:
What do you mean?

Ocelot: Humans have been riding horse for centuries Snake and as such many civilizations have developed different tricks and techniques with regards to horse riding. In fact, the Russian Cossacks, known for their mastery of horse riding, developed all kinds of tricks when riding on horses, they called it "dzhigitovka." This style of riding eventually became very popular so much so that in the U.S., during 19th Century, large shows were put on to showcase what was called "Trick Riding."

Snake: Trick Riding?

Ocelot: Yes, at these Equestrian events some of the countries best horse riders would display the most daring and technical "horse tricks." Some of the earliest famous tricks included "Roman Riding," where a rider would stand upright on two horses, as well as "The Drag" where a rider would hang off the side of the horse.

Snake: Alright, but how does this help me?

Ocelot: Snake, I know you aren't a Equestrian Master but you could learn a few horse tricks yourself that could help you in a tight spot. For example, hanging off the side of a horse would allow you hide your self from enemies who aren't looking to closely. If you recall Odysseus used a similar trick with sheep in Homer's "Odyssey." But be careful, enemies aren't blind like the cyclops in the old epic. "Dragging" on the side of a horse should only be used on enemies who are at a medium distance so as to be sure they can't get a better look.

Snake: Ok, I'll give it a try, how exactly do I pull this trick off?

Ocelot: It's simple really, find a horse and mount it pressing the Action Button. Once you are mounted, press Forward on the Analog Stick to move forward. Next, hold the Action Button and the Analog Stick in the direction you wish to "Drag." You should then be able to hang from the side of the horse. You can hang on the side for as long as you hold the Action Button down. But, remember in this "Drag" Mode you won't be able to steer the horse as well or be able to control it's speed.

Snake: Thanks, I think I got it.

Dude, I laugh my ass off to this day thinking about that post. Seriously, you should have been given a tag. Sweet Jesus, that was so good.

^That's pretty much how it goes.

Also, it should be noted that asking too many questions afflicted Raiden as well.

Thiry Billion Dollars?!

Those are a MEDICOM TOY product called KUBRICK (sorry, no blocks, only figurines):

MEDICOM TOY - METAL GEAR SOLID COLLECTORS EDITION #2(クローズタイプ)

Good finish with fine texture and great detail, cool ones! The BE@RBRICK collection from the same company has been in high-fashion for many years now.

I'm actually playing MGS3 for the first time. I knew the story, but the gameplay... HNNG. So good. Can't believe this is from two gens ago. Although I gotta admit, there's some cheesiness in the dialogue. Kojima has surely grown up in his writing.

Ya know, the more I reflect back, the more I'm thinking I liked MGS4. Sure the plot was all over the crazy place, but that mission at night in the city was cool.

MGS4 was great. It certainly has the most elements that I didn't like (the plane interludes, some of the writing and tone, cutscenes/ending were too long) but I'll be damned if it isn't an awesome game in general. I liked the overall story, themes, gameplay was fantastic, bosses were awesome, and I thought the very end-end was legitimately emotional.

I love MGS4 but those cutscenes could have been edited down dramatically and the classic sneaking past guards gameplay should have lasted past the first two chapters.

Still, I personally hold the game in regard with the rest of the numbered entries.

i recently ran through it again. awesome game, horrible story, especially once you meet big mama and after. i still can't believe how many and how long the cutscenes are. unbearable.

Oh yes! Though it would be really nice if there are VHS tapes or something - so we get video footage of Snake interacting with characters.

Hell yeah, man. I never had a problem with MGS4, but the more and more I've played it over the years, the more I appreciate that mission. When attempting Big Boss runs, I would feel so much regret during the bike chase, like "Why the hell am I doing this and why do I hate myself?" MGS4, while probably my least favorite Metal Gear, is a game I still value more than my favorite game outside of the Metal Gear franchise. These games are just on another level to me. ;-)

Fixed for Phantom Pain accuracy.

Yeah, the plot was crazy, but I'm strictly talking about the gameplay. The first level in the city was cool, and I loved the second mission out in the woods/field. Plus the boss fight in the cabin was great. Oh, and going back to the MGS1 level was awesome.

Ya know, the more I reflect back, the more I'm thinking I liked MGS4. Sure the plot was all over the crazy place, but that mission at night in the city was cool.

I love it. As for the story, I'm amazed it tied off everything as well as it did for a series that had been so all over the place with ambiguity and misdirection.

Hey, weren't Ocelot and Raven part of Outer Heaven according to MGS1's backstories?

Raven was, which I didn't know but apparently he did, Ocelot however is unclear, before being headhunted into Foxhound he did lots of mercenary work, so it's possible he was helping Big Boss during the Outer Heaven uprising.

... But it was annoying as well. The first section involved tailing someone. I hated it so much. Everything after the next cutscene was great. I especially loved the chicken comes home to roost end section.

No one is asking for him to repeat the last word of every sentence, but I just find it odd that while Ocelot is detailing him on miller, his cohort and somewhat friend, he doesn't say anything.

Not even a bode of confidence?

just weird IMO.

@SRJB gets it.

Hey, weren't Ocelot and Raven part of Outer Heaven according to MGS1's backstories?
According to Naomi, Raven was a part of "those rent-a-war bastards at Outer Heaven inc.". Keep in mind this is one of those kind of lines that may have not translated over properly or is kind of outdated. I doubt they'll ever be called "Outer Heaven Inc.", for example lol but it was probably the root of Kojima's idea of introducing them as a private military "company".

Ocelot might have been part of the Outer Heaven Uprising, I can't recall if he mentioned that, but that line with Raven that definitely exists kind of implies there were people a part of Outer Heaven that Snake just never encountered. Kind of like in the Phantom Pain depending on how you play, apparently you can miss Boss encounters :P

They do skip a tutorial, maybe Big Boss says something then. Plus I'm sure there are briefing tapes where the two converse.

Dad I got an F on my history test...
What!? How?
Apparently the Cuban missile crisis didn't occur to get Sokolov back to Russia?
That's some straight up bullshit right there son! Why else would they send Naked Snake to Russia on a virtuous mission... God... Tell your teacher to get his head out of his ass!
