Have you tried ditching the stealth in the game and just going all out combat. The stealth mechanics are more there as a homage to the series and isnt fun. It is a character action game afterall and the combat is where its strengths lie.

Stealth is shit in this game, play it like a hack and slash title

Yeah that's what I ended up doing. I couldn't help but try the stealth when it seemed appropriate though. I tried my best to stealth takedown those asshole ape-like cyborgs that stomp the shit out of you because I couldn't figure out how to properly fight them. That could be linked to me reluctantly playing through the game when I realized it wasn't anything special. I played through only once.

That's how most people felt about MGS2 the first time they played it. Maybe you weren't in the right frame of mind? Have you thought about giving it another chance, trying it again?

I didn't have exactly the same experience. The stealth mechanics are definitely more simplified than MGS4---actually they're almost exactly the same mechanics as Metal Gear 1: Enemies have a pixel thin like of sight, they're alerted if you pass through their line of sight, unless you're prone in a box. Pretty simple. Biggest issue I have is that the walking animation takes to long to start/stop and the animations don't look stealthy---MGR2 should have a separate set of animations for the same actions depending on if enemies are in alert phase or not: Alert phase looks more vicious/badass/ready to kill while otherwise his profile would more resemble Big Boss in MGSV.

I absolutely agree with you on the way it looks. The mainline MGS games all have incredibly strong aesthetics. MGS1's John Carpenter influence, MGS2's digital vibe, and MGS3's groovy naturalism are a huge part of what makes the series great to me. Platinum didn't put nearly any thought into the color grading, art style, visual motifs... It's mostly the same look as every other game they've done besides Madworld. The boss designs were great, but every other part of the visual production felt phoned in to me.

I disagree on MGS:R's original story, however. We already know what happened, and I don't think there's enough room in the canon to create some epic story with huge metal gears and interesting characters between 2009 and 2014.

I was thinking about doing another playthrough. I'm not entirely sure, though.

Well the stealth mechanics I understood, it just didn't work well since it just looked like Raiden wanted to run around and slash people (so I did). Those animations were the biggest issue.

Yeah, the art style was the final nail in the coffin for me. It wasn't aesthetically pleasing like the other games.

I understand, but I was hoping they just did something small scale, nothing globe trotting and epic with a ton of new characters. It'd be his teams first time on their own after all. I just think it was dumb that Raiden fell back into that life in the first place after the ending of MGS2. It was even more shitty that Kojima GrayFoxified Raiden just to make him 'cool'. I didn't mind him in 2 for the most part (he was quite whiney though).

Off the subject of Rising for awhile, NeoGAF user XOF Unit, do you think the MGS series should have ended with MGS2? or with MGS3? or MGS4? Are you glad it's still chugging forward? At what point, if ever, should the series end or have ended, in your opinion?

That parallel was kind of set-up in MGS2, not just when he got the sword in Arsenal Gear, there was a whole section of Substance all about "Ninja-Raiden" in an exo-suit.

I'm a huge fan of this series & I have been since I got my first taste on that Playstation Underground demo of MGS1.

I'm glad the series is still going, because it's my single most beloved series in gaming, but I am not a blind fanboy in any sense. I think that MGS4 is a result of Kojima being pressured to answer questions about MGS2 when he clearly intended it to be left to interpretation. MGS4 should have been PW and gone from there. Don't get me wrong, 4 is a great game, but for what it did to 2 (& 3 with the Patriots)? It leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I love MGS3 as well.

I think MGSV should truly end the story of Metal Gear Solid. Do I think there should be more MGS games? Sure, I think it'd be cool to remake both MG1&2 to address canon and let everything tie in better. I see this series as the story of Big Boss (like Darth Vader) and Solid Snake (Luke Skywalker). Star War is simpler to understand, so I figured I'd make that connection to try and get my thought across.

It's a 50 year chronology ('64 - '14) and there are bound to be continuity issues, but after MGS3, the gap had to be filled for Big Boss' storyline.

That parallel was kind of set-up in MGS2, not just when he got the sword in Arsenal Gear, there was a whole section of Substance all about "Ninja-Raiden" in an exo-suit.

I can't help but wonder if that was planned or if it was added due to the backlash against Raiden. I figured it was just a nod at the Gray Fox VR missions of 1.

Some people still don't get it. I don't give a shit if he just talks about MGS on his next Kojima Station episode. I take it as a hint for Solid Snake to be in MGSV. Kojima will now more and more talk about Solid Snake to build the hype and then BOOM!
Sorry I didn't humor your delusions.

Well, the sword bit at the end of MGS2 would've been implemented well before that. The sword mechanics were already in the game, so I imagine it wasn't so much because of the backlash but rather to explore the mechanic and add more variety to the VR stuff.

If it was just as a nod to the Gray Fox VR stuff, then Kojima is drawing a parallel between the two, right? :)

Right, but story-wise it just seemed weak. Leaving Rose and completely going back on what was said at the end of MGS2 seemed dumb. Like Snake, for example. He went from, 'pass the torch, make your own future, etc." to "let the world be". It was a total 180 of his character in terms of motivation. I get the whole getting old and not giving a shit thing, but it seemed too convenient an excuse. Then again, it was just mirrioring what Kojima felt at the time I suppose.

That's kind of accepting one narrative contrivance over another. At least it is if you didn't think that MGS2's opening "betrays" the ending of MGS. In one of MGS' endings, Snake basically gives up fighting and says he is going to live for "someone else" (ie Meryl).

Snake : A reminder of how to live. Until today, I've lived only for myself. Survival has been the only thing I cared about in my life.

Meryl : That's not just you. That's how everyone is.

Snake : I only felt truly alive when I was staring Death in the face. I don't know, maybe it's written into my genes.

Meryl : What about now? What do your genes say about your future now?

Snake : Maybe it's time I live for someone else.

Meryl : Someone else?

Snake : Yeah. Someone like you... Maybe that's the real way to live.

Meryl : So...where to, Snake?

Snake : David. My name is David...

Meryl : Okay, so where to, Dave?

Snake : Hmmm. I think it's time we look for a new path in life.

They pretty much brush over that completely till MGS4.

That's very true, you got me there. That can be linked to Kojima's mindset of each MGS game being his last. I still can't get passed him forcing answers where he didn't intend there to be any for certain things in MGS2. In retrospect, MGS4's story could've been handled much better.

Yeah, by Kojima's definition the themes of MGS2 and MGS4 are antithetical. "Meme", The concepts that a person can pass on, and "Sense", the concepts that a person can't pass on. It makes sense that Snake's motivations would change along with that shift in subtext. I like to look at each game as if it were originally written as an original IP, and then re-written to work as an MGS game. All the inconsistencies in character development make more sense that way.

Regarding MGSV being the "end" of MGS, are you sure you don't want to see a Boss game set during World War II? Because man, if there's one series that could make Nazis fun again, I think it's MGS.

That comes up a lot I've noticed. I think it'd be cool, but unecessary. Where would the titular Metal Gear come into play? First iteration wasn't until 1964. I've always wanted an alternate version of MGS2 to take place through Snake's perspective at Shell 2. That'd have been cool.

True, true.

To me, Raiden getting over his violent past because Snake gave him an eloquent speech is a heck of a lot less "believable" than Raiden's demons catching up with him a few years later.

It doesn't really matter. I think with Metal Gear you kind of have to go with the flow. Unfortunately, because Kojima felt he had to "end" the series with a ton of fan service, MGS4 made it really difficult. Rather than going with the flow it tried to shore up all the holes and patch everything together which led to some inelegant and ugly 'solutions'.

Kojima is at his best when he does what he wants to and ignores the fanbase.

Yes pls. We could have a steampunk-style Metal Gear AXIS.

I've always thought this would happen. Playing through MGS2 again it's amazing how many times snake will say contact you via codec saying stuff like: "Raiden I've just done some really cool stuff over at shell 2. It was amazing. Really you should have seen it". The first time I played it I was just waiting to switch over control to Snake but was always left wanting.

I get the impression it may have been in Kojima's plans but scrapped late on.

Well, Shagohod wasn't a Metal Gear, technically. I'm sure somebody could think of some kind of Nazi doomsday device as threatening as metal gear.

Yes indeed. When it comes to story/plot, he shouldn't ever listen to anyone but that voice in his head, except of course when it comes to gameplay.

Haha that's exactly what I was hoping for. Doing all the cool shit Snake did would be awesome. The boss fights already are in there, too. Olga and Fortune are already mentioned, seen, and all they'd need to do is throw in Vamp or someone else.

That's true. Those Nazi's are always coming up with some sort of warmachine. The reason Shagohod was significant to Metal Gear was because of Sokolov's "rivalry" with Granin who game up with it.

in the lead up to MGS2 substance, my young mind thought this is what "Snake Tales" was going to be. i was crushed (once again) by them being "psuedo-historical recreations"

This is the unfortunate truth :/

I thought this as well. I was hoping for a fully realized Shell 2!

14 year old me begged my mother to take me to Gamestop during a blizzard to pick Substance up on release day. I was pissed when I realized that Substance was just a repackaging of the same game, that there was no MGS2 from Snake's perspective on Big Shell. I'm willing to give Snake tales a shot one of these days soon though.

i ran through them again recently. they're okay. you get to run around the big shell in various snake skins (pun intended) and fight a bunch of different bosses. the stories are pretty silly though

If you have the HD collection, definitely. Platinuming MGS2 was a bitch, but I did it. Snake Tales were fun little non-canon stories. I liked how they depicted what Snake, Otacon, and Mei Ling were like when doing Philanthropy stuff.

IMO MGS series should've been as FF series. Different stories, different universes, but some constants. Tying it all together during MGS2 and MGS4 made the plot ridiculous and went pretty close to full retard.

So, Konami Europe showed the Castlevania game and PES during last year's Gamescom.

I wonder what they'll show this year. PES is a definite yes but I wonder what else. I can't see them showing MGSV but who knows - it depends on how far the game is in development.

When's PES?

If the game is really coming out Early 2015 they want to show it off as much as possible, especially on big events like Gamescom and TGS.

*fingers crossed* for a new trailer

Project Ogre isn't real. It has never been a thing. Kojima launched project 鬼の (the demon project) but why has Konami hid this true intent from us?

We get ogre, we get SutherSnake. Japan gets demon, japan keeps ŌtsukaSnake.

Something is amiss.

I'm getting the 60 fps video is I type this. It's quite the huge file and there is still more than one hour left. Then I'll have to have the streaming versions encoded, so I wouldn't expect it to be online before at 10PM CEST, in a bit more than 6 hours or so. Considering the file size is 6 GB, direct download is not an option, so this will be torrent and streaming only.

Thanks, I was afraid this would be an IGN only thing.

It's Project Oni, actually. Since there's no directly english equivalent to an Oni, some translate it as "Demon" while others translate it as "Ogre". It's really a little of both.

It's a 30 mbps version btw. I got 20% of the 50 mbps version yesterday and honestly the difference is so minimal it's not worth the 4 more GB...
