Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

Really wish I would have put the 500 bucks I put toward Broken Age to this instead. Absolute gem of a game and I hope it gets the sales it deserves.

It's gotten amazing promotion from Nintendo and Nintendo-related sites, so I'm sure it'll do fine over there. It's currently top #15 on Steam, which is pretty damn impressive considering the competition today.

Yeah I think it will do pretty well sales-wise, sounds like they've hit a home run.

Gonna go with 3DS version for now (and PC Humble Bundle version in 2 years?).

Ive only watched a small amount of footage, so didnt know what to exactly expect.

So my first impression playing it, is that its an awesome throw back to the nes days, with a modern twist.

It feels authentic to them old games, so it feels strangly good playing it as a brand new game in 2014. It being on my Nintendo console makes it that much better.

The music is great, as well as the sound effects.

Charming style, that feels its own. I also like how the gamepad screen, and its miiverse posts, show up like an nes game would.

Great and tight gameplay. Im really liking the orbs, particularly the green one that bounces. I can see how multiplayer will be fun. Great mechanics.

Ive been paying for breaking checkpoints. Just the right amount of challenge for me. Im only 40 min in.

edit: Also like the amount of secrets, and how you curious you need to be, to find the more hidden ones.

Ive only fought one boss, and the gameplay mechanics is a lot of fun.

I only got to play for 20 minutes before I had to go out and about. So that was the first stage and some stuff in the village. I'm already in love. I always forget how much I love 8-bit games until I play one (or one in that style, in this case). The quick-inventory system on the gamepad reminds me of WWHD, so that justifies using the gamepad in my eyes. I can't wait to go back to it later.

So what's so good about this game anyway? I just got a Wii U last week and I've just been hearing about this game nonstop since then. I watched a trailer of it but I guess I don't really see the appeal? Could someone help me understand?

only played the first level (before getting to the map) and i gotta say, this game feels great. glad i picked it up for the wii u because the music is kick ass coming through my speakers. love the pogo. gives me some serious adventures of link nostalgia (once again, my favorite zelda, bar none). well, gotta go. have shovel, will travel.

It's "deliciously old school". It feels like you're playing some weird cross between 8 bit duck tales, castlevania, and mario 3.

Beyond the influences, though, it's just well done. The overall visual design, I feel, is not particularly strong, but it has very polished gameplay. It excels at constantly engaging the player and, at least so far, presents a fun challenge but without becoming brutal.

I'm having a really hard time deciding which version to buy/play, I see pros for each one...

I am going with the Wii U version. Any chance that I have to play games on the big screen I am going for it. If I want to watch TV (for example...sports in the background) at the same time I can just do offscreen play on the Wii U gamepad

Seems like some of the Steam achievements are bugged? I got I'm Alive and Shovel Economy in-game but not in Steam. Both are at 0% on Steam's global stats, as are the achievements Untouched, HurryUp!, and Checkpointless (though the latter two might genuinely just be unobtained at this point).

It still tracks them in-game at least, so not a huge concern.

Does anyone else think the sound effects for them falling chandeliers and digging gems, remind you of this game:

Thats a good thing.

Anyone have a scanline generator? I am dying to see what it looks like...

This is one of the best games I've ever played, I am in love.

Who knew GOTY 2014 would be a piece of shovelware?

So hard to choose between PC and Wii U for me. The only reason I'm thinking PC over U is achievements, but then again I realize that I don't really care about achievements once I start playing. Plus I like having games on my Wii U, and with my huge list of Steam games I feel that Shovel Knight would be lost :(

I also have a 3DS, but I guess I never considered getting it on there. Didn't realize it was actually released on 3DS.

Game looks nice on the WiiU pad. I might play the whole game this way. It almost feels right doing so with the 8bit style the game has going for it.

You get Feats on Wii U, and there'll always be Steam sales for double dipping. I'd say just jump at Wii U for now.

Got the 3ds one. Game is awesome. 3d looks pretty nice too and visually it's pretty crisp looking too! Was afraid it would look muddy on 3ds especially my 3ds XL. No regrets lol. Though is love it on wiiu eventually if it goes on a sale

If you're only going to get one version: the PC has the advantage of unlimited forwards compatibility. So, when you want to experience nostalgia for gaming from 20 years ago 20 years from now, you won't have to drop another few dollars.

Plus you get cards that you can sell on the market that could take some money off the total cost.

If you're going to get two versions anyway: buy either the Wii U or 3DS version and wait for a Steam sale.

Whoa, visited the Nintendo Digital website, and saw I have $15 as credit. Guess I'm getting this, now only need to decide between 3DS or Wii U :D

It's 8-10 hours for your first 100% playthrough, and then there's New Game + and plenty of Feats (achievements) to get beyond that. It's plenty long for the price and genre. Don't let its length make you not buy this. It's *fantastic*.

Oh, I didn't know it was actually more than like a couple hours. Nvm. Sounds awesome. xD

Ran into a weird glitch when battling Tinker Knight. After beating it's first form the screen did not scroll down, then it snapped down but I couldn't move he was just doing the animation of him raising his shovel. I had to restart the level. :(

Shaky cam footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qLBoGeDQeE&feature=youtu.be

Edit: Redid the level and the same thing happened. WTF? Anyone else run into this glitch?

I just got this as well. I quickly pressed the home button and am doing the level completely from scratch. Hope it works.
I didn't get it on all the Tinker Knight battles, so maybe it's a conditional glitch.

so.... wiiu or 3DS?

I am leaning more towards WiiU

It's the same game. Each version has a unique feature, but it's the same game. Buy it where you'd prefer to play it.

Features...

3DS - 3d layers, Streetpass mini-game
Wii U - Digger's Diary (Dark Souls-esque messaging)

Both can do Miiverse and both have Feats.
