Hehe but seriously, it's not for everyone. For me, though, it was almost life changing. Especially considering my passion for games and desire to become a dev.

You play as an operative that is heads and tails above everyone else. There's an ancient alien weapon that you have to stop the aliens from activating. You end up destroying the ancient weapon so it can't be used again. One of the enemy aliens is actually a good guy and helps you out. You and your partner escape at the end just before everything blows up.
I know a lot of that might seem like reaching, but when I first played Halo, all I had heard was how amazing the gameplay was and how original the story was, then I played the whole thing wondering why I could only use two guns and why the story kept reminding me of Perfect Dark.

I agree with the OP about Majoras Mask. Loved OoT to death but couldn't bring myself to play Majoras Mask, just never had an interest.
As for my controversial opinion, I do not see the appeal in Mario Kart. I've played the N64 version and bought the DS version (came bundled with the console). Don't like them at all, yet funnily enough I loved Blur which was essentially the same game.
-I hate having life bars appear directly over the characters and not having the option to turn them off (several recent ARPG do this) . It's enough to make me not buy a game I would otherwise enjoy. I know seeing life bars is kinda important, but put them off to the side or at the top of the screen.
-Panzer Dragoon Saga has little redeeming value.
-Shenmue should've never happened.
-Spikeout: Battlestreet needs at least two or three sequels. The original Spikeout should've been on PSN/ XBLA seven years ago.
-Double Dragon II: Wander of the Dragons was the best worst game of 2013.
-There is never any reason to play any Atari 2600 game. Ever.
-And finally, (and many of you GAFers may really hate me for this); I am of the opinion that oversensitive social justice warriors should stop trying to guilt us into changing video games to fit their world views and instead focus their resources and energy on real world problems. Video games are a fantastical getaway from reality and should not be under any obligation to conform to anyone else's vision other than the developers'. It's one thing to critic and analyze video games, it's quite a leap, however, to start asserting that games indirectly have some profound negative effect on the social group or subgroup to which you belong without offering any objective evidence.
Yes, I have access to Google and JSTOR, and found very little to support claims that are often made about the relationship twixt video games and their social impact. There are many variables that will affect an individual's perception and treatment of other social groups, including age, mental development, upbringing/ background, time-spent and experience socializing with other groups, time spent consuming media, etc. It almost comes down to the variable being at an individual basis when determing the impact that any level of a particular type of gaming has.
But the thing about framerate is that it could be affecting whether you're having fun or not without you even being directly cognisant of it. You only think you don't care.
So what about 2fps? Would you still have fun? Framerate is important, like it or not. Smooth framerate can also actively improve the gameplay experience, so it's actively linked to "fun" for me.
People who proclaim to only care about fun make it sound that good gameplay and technology can't go together which is a weird concept. Why not both?
Clearly, I understand the *importance* of frame rate in the development of good software... I just don't care about it.
Similarly, I don't care what sort of cameras were used in the filming of the Sopranos.
I either enjoy the end product or I don't.
Don't get me wrong: you'z all talk about frame rate until you're blue in the face... You obviously enjoy it - more power to you. It just seems strange to me when a game is announced and the first question is often a desperate "IS IT 60 FPS???"
Factually incorrect; there will always be historical investigation, and given how simple it really is to play a game it may as well be done in the name of research for whatever you're doing.
We were a Genesis household so I never played LTTP until well into the PSX/N64 era. Maybe I would've enjoyed it if I played it in its day.
But yeah, the formula of:
- slowly, methodically explore dungeon
- find new piece of equipment
- use that piece of equipment to solve some contrived puzzle
is just so stale and boring. It feels like you're just going through the motions and pretending like you're enjoying it (the EXACT motions the designers intended you to go through).
Combat is boring and basic, the stories are nothing special, and there are no interesting character progression mechanics. Plus they start off extremely slowly with all the tutorials and gobs of boring dialog.
Care to elaborate on this? I always wondered whether PDS was really all it's hyped up to be, or if it was one of those "it's the best game ever because YOU never played it" deals that some hardcore JRPG fans pull.
I don't like the idea of the Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem cross-over.
One of the things I like the most about the Shin Megami Tensei series (mainline titles + DDS, DeSu and the Raidou games) is the fact the games always use the "Heroic Mime" trope. In other words, the protagonists never talk and the player is free to picture them with whatever personality they like the most. I would go as far as to say that would probably play a lot more RPGs if this trope was used more often. Anyways, with said cross-over, it is very likely that the devs will give the protagonists "canon" personalities and I would obviously dislike that, for the stated reason above. There is the small possibility the heroines will do the talking and the protagonists will stay mute, though and that is what I am hoping for.
I am posting this here because 1. I wanted to get this out of my chest and 2. apparently a lot of people (or at least gaffers and /v/ers) dislike the idea of mute protagonists (I will never understand why, since the Heroic Mime trope only helps in the role playing aspect of RPGs), so I guess not wanting the SMT protagonists to get personalities is an unpopular opinion.
Lastly, yes, I know the cross-over will obviously be "non-canon", but that will not stop 90% of the fandom from believing whatever is said and how the characters are portrayed in the cross-over as canon. I'd rather not have to deal with that.
Mortal Kombat was cool....when i was 10. The latest one felt forced and the concept of fatalities seems like catering to the lowest common denomiator. MK series is the Michael Bay of fighting games at this point.
The last good Mario game was Mario 64. Everything else has felt gimmicky.
Metal Gear series is getting more stale as more versions are released. So has Monster Hunter.
Chrono Trigger is hard to get into if you didn't play it when it was originally released.
Oblivion was a great WRPG and more easy to get into than morrowind.
I still don't see what was so great about Half-Life 2.
Street Fighter 4 is more fun to look at than play. I still think 3rd strike is the pinnacle of the SF series.
Please stop with the pixel/8 bit graphics games already. I didn't spend $300+ on my gpu or $400+ on my game console for something that looks like it came from the late 80s. It was a nice break, but let it go.

If you abstract a plot to such a degree, yeah it's going to sound the same. The actual game's plots have very little to do with each other thematically or stylistically.
As for "damage" to FPS as a genre, what do you define as "damage"? I'd rather play Halo any day than the man-of-a-thousand-guns Doom corridor shooters of yesteryear.
That, and the gameplay was subpar as well.
People only gush over it because it looks great and is very well-acted, which just goes to show that people want movies, not video games.
Not me. I couldn't care less about stories in video games and I still think the game play was fantastic in that game. The multi player is loads of fun and only proves how good the game play is.

I'm perfectly fine with buying sequels to games so long as their good and further refined. Some would say I "contribute to the problem" with sequels but I dislike new IPs for the sake of new. I dislike when a new mechanic is slapped on just to make something feel different without building around it to the point of it being unnecessary. They only feel "decent" or mediocre at best.
I much prefer well thought out new IPs, small budget or big with gameplay built around these interesting mechanics instead of being tacked on and forceful.
I'd also much prefer different genres being utilized to their full potential, and taking a break from the FPS genre.
I think Zelda: The wind waker is horribly overrated, it looks pretty but the sailing is just too slow and boring and changing the wind direction can get really tedious, the game is REALLY easy (TP level) , the dungeons aren't really good, they're mostly average and the triforce quest was really boring.
Also who came up with the idea of having to re-battle all the bosses in the last dungeon and why did I have to re-visit the tedious forsaken fortress

He's absolutely full of shit. The game isn't anything special to look at these days, but everything else about it is unmatched with any other RPG since it's release. It's story, music and game play still holds up incredibly. And it's not too long of a game so it's perfect for anyone looking to start and finish an epic game without spending a month doing so.
30fps games released today shouldn't be supported or bought. Its a travesty they exist at all.
Indie games for the most part are shit and they are ruining the more retro style of Nes/Snes/Genesis games by making most of them.
Not a fan of either series... But... Battlefield Hardline is still going to sell 3 million copies for no reason other than it has Battlefield in the title and be a terrible game. CoD Future Warfare is doing some things to change their formula somewhat and the game looks great but will be shit on hard just for having CoD in the title.
Xenoblade Chronicles is overrated among forum goers on the Internet. It is an OK RPG with terrible voice acting. Nowhere near the best RPG games.
It is but it's shortened a lot, so less tedious and much less jarring to the pacing. Sailing is way quicker, as is map reading etc due to the gamepad. Actually makes some of the other issues fade away for me.
(Disclaimer: I loved the original but the remake propelled it to near gaming perfection imo)
As each week goes by I am thinking ios and android gaming is the future. We are approaching the tipping point where a lot of the games will be good enough (lots of factors price v graphics v playability) to be played on TV like with the Android TV.

I can get behind this. I didn't mind the voice acting too much, but it's just not a very good game. I don't understand why GAF loves it so much. Is it because of the niche status and rarity? It's a mediocre JRPG with some good and some terrible aspects.
The larger Pokemon game and universe - the networking, the distribution, the trading, the collecting, the evolutions, the secrets, the franchise in general - are fucking amazing.
The actual battles - the turn-based menu-based battles - are abysmally boring.
