Digital Foundry: Destiny Beta XB1 analysis and PS4 comparison

Good to hear both are performing well. Should mean everyone gets a great experience from Destiny no matter what side they are on. Hopefully Destiny 2 pushes for some cross-platform play.

As DF said, that 10% GPU shouldn't be enough to go from 900p to 1080p. So either Bungie had a bit of headroom (other than the 10% kinect reserve) in xbone but choose not to use it for anything until now, or there will be some cutbacks to visual effects in release build.

Destiny looks good, but it doesn't look spectacular. Xbone is probably the target platform. The added 10% will probably lower the amount of optimisation necessary to hit 1080/30. As for PS4, the game probably hits around that target with less effort.

Hopefully Destiny 2 pushes for some cross-platform play.

To be honest, even though there are vast optimisations ahead, I think the PS4 will have more to give at every point of this generation. I'm more inclined to believe that if there is a 'parity' game its because the PS4 hasn't been pushed harder. Hardly a controversial opinion, PS4 hardware is significantly more powerful than Xbox One hardware, especially the GPU.

Case in point, The Order: 1886 and Uncharted 4: A thief's end. Unreleased I know, but those two games look leaps and bounds ahead of everything else announced so far, visually.

This is correct. However I don't think there is a huge problem with certain games having parity. If a developer has a goal and the XB1 is powerful enough to meet it then there is no reason it can't be the same as the PS4 version. Of course if both were pushed to their limits the PS4 would look better but this doesn't always have to be the case, especially this early on in the generation.

Still amazed with some peoples perception that the PS4 is a super high end gaming PC and the XB1 is on the level of the Wii U.

It can't catch up unless they put faster memory in the system with a better GPU.
Tom Penny is just trolling to start some flame wars here.
And as you can see on the amount of replies, it worked.

And yes, sounds like "parity".
Thanks, Bungie.

When the final version on the Xbox comes out I'm expecting the exact same visuals. Bungie isn't making any visual stunner as a game and 30 FPS should be a cakewalk for both versions.

The stutter going from the Steppes and Mothyards areas, is due to those being loading zones. I know it was insanely bad in an earlier build. I'm talking freeze and crash if you didn't stop to let it load when hitting those zones. Alpha and now beta I don't even notice it. So yea. That's what that is. There is always going to be a very very minor stutter there because that's just how Bungie handles the loading of areas. Anyone who played Halo knows all about that. Most of their Halo games were very good with it. The only one that had a small issue was Reach. It would stutter really good at some loading zones.

as before it wasn't. It's just that they have to work a bit harder on it to make that happen.

This may also be pretty valid

I'll have to see them in action. I remember reading the discussions of how killzone and second son killed anything Xbox had graphically but after playing both not to long ago for me they don't touch ryse.

So basically, every version of the game is roughly the same.

I think we'll be seeing more third parties scale back on PS4 versions to achieve parity.

I think this will be a minority case, look at Tomb Raider, a last gen upgrade, and that had differences between versions.

Destiny is from a very good developer who got the balance right so that it runs well on both, most developers will do some crazy shit that will run well on high end PC, ok on PS4, and respectably with cutbacks on xb1.

I'd rather have lower quality assets at a higher resolution than the other way around.

... and the eternal debate rages on.

People are either in one camp or the other. It will really be interesting to see if more games allow you to turn off effects in favour of a higher res and vice versa.

Just give the option to the people.

Wait Wut? Shouldn't either of these consoles do 1080p at 30fps ok? I'm wondering if one of these console makers waited a year to have an affordable 1080p 60fps machine, if it would have been better off in the long run this gen.

It's also never going to happen with a cross platform game either. I've never seen a developer who does a cross platform game who maxes either console out. It's just not wise resource wise and financially. That's business. I think a lot of people forget that games are that. A business. They're going to set a bar of what they want to accomplish and get that out of the game on both consoles. You have to figure the PS4 is hitting that bar easier but the Xbone is capable of hitting it too now where

I'm still a little bummed that they didn't decide to run the MP at 60fps. I know that would have created some disparity between the MP and the other portions of the game...but I just like 60fps in competitive modes, especially first person shooters.

Bungie apparently unaware of what they can do with their own game, says Neogaffer.

Neogaffer: Battlefield 4 could run better. It's a broken mess!

Intentionally gimping the superior version isn't great news at all.
Huh? Bungie only got the Xbox One version to reach 1080p thanks to the July update. PS4 was already running on 1080p at that time. Destiny was completed graphics wise at that point in time. They didn't gimp the PS4 version, they bumped the Xbox One version thanks to an unexpected power increase. Meaning that the Xbox One suddenly could also handle Destiny how Bungie wanted it to look.

No dev is going to create new assets just because one platform can suddenly run the game as they original wanted it.

PS4 version is better then? I know it was probably inevitable, but seeing it confirmed more or less helps to remove the last lingering bit of doubt I may have had about selling my XB1.

Only regret now is there's no way to play this game at 60fps.

For those who replied to me.

Bungie clearly stated that they want the game to be similar on all platforms.

If Xbone can do 1080p/30 that means PS4 can do much better.

So giving the 40% power gap (not including the better RAM setup), I can easily assume that PS4 would have handled 1080p/60 with ease.

Look at TR, and MGSGZ

Still amazed with some peoples perception that the PS4 is a super high end gaming PC and the XB1 is on the level of the Wii U.

Mind pointing me to someone who actually thinks that? Trying to downplay the obvious hardware differences with such an extreme example (that no one actually believes) is crazy man.

The fact is, the PS4 is stronger, and not in some insignificant matter. Being at full parity means that Bungie held back the PS4 version to maintain the parity. Or perhaps it means something else, but what could that be? The only way to achieve parity is by gimping one for the lowest common denominator. It's not a conspiracy theory.

Frankly, I don't care either way. So what if they went for parity. So what if the PS4 version doesn't have any extra filtering or anything. Destiny is fucking awesome, and I'm going to play the shit out of it no matter what.

With this logic, we wouldn't have advanced beyond anything but rudimentary graphics.

In order for some people's perceptions to have been observed on a forum, I'd assume there would be actual posts stating something similar to what you're saying here. I haven't seen them.

It was gimped from the beginning because it also has to accommodate PS3/Xbox 360.

That's irrelevant. Trust me, if the PS4/XB1 version was forced to run at last gen resolution with last gen effects, there'd be just as much upset.

Yes, being on last gen inherently means the game is held back, but that doesn't mean they couldn't have use the PS4's extra power to make it better. With that said, this is still only the Beta, so waiting for the full release before making an final assumptions would be best. One things for sure, I won't be supporting parity

Great to see an excellent experience on both systems.

I was expecting some hiccups in the X1 beta but it is incredibly smooth. It's probably one of the best feeling "30fps" games I've played.

I cant read the article yet but isnt this supposition on DFs part that the final game will be identical across the XO and PS4?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting the more powerful console, that you made the choice to buy over the other, display better graphics. Most devs aren't aiming for parity this gen, I don't think Bungie should either. People make their choices of console (ones that can only afford one/only want one), devs should get the most out of each console, not "gimp" any version for the sake of parity.

It's an awesome game, and the parity decision isn't going to put me off buying it and enjoying it, that would be pretty petty, but I'm glad parity isn't the norm this gen. Apart from Destiny and the upcoming Battlefield: Hardline, I can't think of any other games that were made with parity in mind.
