Nintendo Downloads - July 2014

It's on my list but I know it'll be in a steam sale for crazy cheap. Why buy now?

Just for the fun of something additional to play on Wii U + DDP points. I'm not much of a PC gamer, though.

I picked it up but I am waiting for them to fix the double jump control, the one they chose is very clunky.

Did you try playing Wiimote only? I find that control scheme pretty intuitive for the double jump.

Played a bit of Pokemon Link Battle. My thoughts are game would be a lot better if it the manual/game explained some more things and didn't relegate most of the Pokemon into "no ability therefore you'll never use these as partners"*. Also the scoring system is kind of daft as it seems that power of five Pokemon have an upper hand there (especially when stacked with super effective). Another daft thing is having wall health and actual health as separate things (a few Pokemon can repair one of those).

It is a shame about the link mechanic as the non-link mode music sounds really good but you never want to hear it as you want to enter link mode ASAP to stop enemies wailing on you...

*-Apparently they become friendly really quickly though...what does friendly do? Some think it is +4 stars of power as but there is no bloody proof and the game is useless at telling you exactly what the difference between 1 and 5 stars of attack is. Maybe some Japanese wiki has figured it out...Edit: Japanese wiki kind of figured it out no idea of friendship but 5* is a coefficient of 15 vs. coefficient of 10 for 1* (basically 5* is 50% stronger which isn't as big as you would expect...).

Sorry, I should have specified 3DS. I'm boned, aren't I?
Oh yeah, pretty much. If you have a spare 3DS without NNID you can redeem on that then do a system transfer to have the NNID assimilate it (at least that was my understanding from reading the manuals).

I wish I could enjoy HarmoKnight but my deafness prevents me from fully enjoying the game.

I stop playing it once I got to world 4 boss.

That would do it... :(

Someone should try to make a rhythm game that's deaf-compatible. I wonder what would solve that problem, maybe a visual metronome that flashes? Something that you would notice while playing but not need to focus on, per se.

New Wii U owner here with a question.

I want to get an NES Remix, but right now only have enough spare eshop cash for one. Which part would people recommend getting? I am leaning towards NES Remix 2 since it includes Super Luigi Bros.

I thought 2 had better game selection and was more interesting...it added the ability to watch replays of other players, so if you don't know what to do, just watch their video. It even shows their button presses.

Super Luigi Bros. was just icing on the cake. Keep in mind you can't get all 100 stamps without owning both (the last stamp is tied to Nintendo World Championship Remix).

If you really want both and don't mind waiting, both are coming to disc this year.

Personally I would recommend getting the first one. I'll just quote Sixfortyfive's excellent posts on the subject:

Getting all rainbows in NES Remix 1 is a matter of mastering each of the games and playing most of them to their fullest.
Getting all rainbows in NES Remix 2 is a matter of playing through what is basically a tutorial for each game.

This is basically why I think NES Remix 1 is the better game.

Even when including a full no-warp play of Super Luigi Bros and a fair bit of time with NWC Remix, my total playtime for 100%ing NES Remix 2 was quite a bit shorter than NES Remix 1.

Remix 1 is better than Remix 2.

Remix 1 is the best format to play several of its featured games. A lot of those games aren't worth more than an hour of dicking around on their own IMO, but having a challenge and achievement structure built around them adds a lot of appeal and replay value for the more arcadey, score- and time-based games that make up most of its content. Going for 100% forces you to learn some nuance and tricks in these games that you might have forgotten or never knew about in the first place, and after doing so, I think you'll feel like you've gotten the full experience out of several of those games even without having access to the full games themselves. You just have to be able to put yourself in a 1985 mindset and accept that most of these games are built around much more limited and rigid controls, among other things.

Remix 2 often felt like little more than a tutorial for its games. I'd rather just play the individual games.

I do think the actual "remix" stages were a little better in the sequel, so I guess it wins out in terms of original content, but that's only, I don't know, one fourth of the total package? I can't remember exactly.

ETA: if you do want to just wait for the retail package containing both games, and have $15 eShop, I would strongly recommend you consider Scram Kitty, one of the best eShop releases of the year, and only $10.

The thing I didn't like about remix 2 is it turned the training wheels on by dropping the optional videos and so for some games having the first challenge be a 3 part one where part 1 is "do nothing for a minute as you watch the fucking title screen demo, better hope you get rainbow first time as this is watching paint dry".

Haha, yeah, that's true. I still haven't redone some of the first challenges for this very reason. As SFF details in his really well-considered posts which I quote above, Remix 1 is really about teaching you speedrun techniques and technical mastery of NES games, Remix 2 is really about showing you highlights and key moments in games. A large part of this is down to the significant differences in the games themselves included in each package. FWIW I really like both games. I think the first one just makes for a better actual game.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I have $20 actually, so I am probably going to get Scram Kitty and Nano Assault Neo for now. I can wait for a sale on NES Remix or for the disc to come out.

Yay! That's awesome. Be sure to let us know what you think over in the OT!

And pro-tip for Scram Kitty, the more health you have, the bigger your double jump/screw attack is. I'm not sure if game will tell you this but it's pretty crucial info.

Yep, took me a while to figure that out about Scram Kitty. If you got money left over, 1001 Spikes & Shovel Knight are both excellent as well!

Two Tribes has free access to my wallet's money, they could probably get my car keys if they wanted to. Can't wait to see more of Rive, it looks fun already!

Yeah, the Docking Bay 3 level with the high jumps was brutal until someone clued me in about that.

That level is really hard, but it does lead you to discover that mechanical quirk yourself (at least it did for me). Man, that game is soooo good... I wish it was charting and in Wara Wara Plaza instead of The Letter.

So it looks like Thursdays Wii U VC title is mega man network GBA. Which means no other title since NOA thinks one VC at a time is sufficient.

One would think with their current financial situation they would release more than one game at a time. What a waste.

Yeah, just like last week, when they had... 2 VC titles.
Oh, wait...

No. Only one wii u VC title. Your constant defense of NOA Is getting very old. Just admit that it could and should be better.

Hmm. There has to be a middle of the road. One constantly defends NOA. One constantly is on the offensive on NOA. It's like there's something called a middle ground, a place where there's gray instead of black and white. :)

I'm not "constantly defending NOA," I'm addressing your constant criticisms of NOA - which you've done far, far more often in this thread.

Where's brain age?
Where's super Mario kart?
Where's super Mario rpg?
Where's secret of mana?
Where's donkey kong land?
Where's Metroid zero mission?

What are you doing NOA!?

NOA won't do this.

No discount? Now that I think about it, has NOA ever done a cross buy discount? Always seems it's in Europe and Japan

NOA is the only region so far where they have yet to do a single cross buy discount at all. None.

We have been down this road before when we thought they were going to totally revamp their awards when they shut down for a week.

They most likely forgot or just don't have time. They literally don't care at NOA at all.

My guess is 30% off selected VC games. Yes they said it LIVE..the asian lady announced it

Of course not. NOA has NEVER given us a discount on any cross buy or promotion. Meanwhile EU and Japan constantly gets cross buy promotions, buy Pikmin; get discount on Wonderful 101 or whatever it was, etc. Zero zip nadda.

It's a shame that it's only in Europe yet but hopefully this cross buy operation will be appreciated and the technical contraints that prevented it to happen in the US will be fixed."

Wonder if this lines up with what I said earlier about NOA never doing a cross buy promotion. Before anyone mentions fire emblem and SMT, that was from club nintendo and not NNID.

Yeah...NOA won't do this. NOA released Bases Loaded and not super mario kart.

Fuck NOA.

For all regions except North America, because yanno NOA.

NOA is absolutely fucking useless.

Golden sun the lost age
All Castlevania
Metroid zero mission
Donkey kong country ports

Doesn't matter. NOA won't release them.

Well. Today's the day to be disappointed by only one VC release and same atlus sales.

I'm out. What a waste.

I think next week is more mega man, but NOA gonna NOA.

Another Monday is about to come where I'm envious of the sales and the games that NOE releases that NOA doesn't...wonder what surprises they'll have this week.

So it looks like Thursdays Wii U VC title is mega man network GBA. Which means no other title since NOA thinks one VC at a time is sufficient.

It's really, really annoying.

Well to be fair they deserve to be bashed. Their output is absolute horrendous. We are so far behind the other countries when it comes to VC it's insulting.

Completely forgot MMBN was coming out tomorrow. I still have Golden Sun, Mario & Luigi, and Advance Wars to go through again before that though. No point getting MMBN immediately. Plus, I want to save my money for Nightmare in Dream Land.

I agree, but not so much where one comes off as a one-trick poster so to speak. hehe

your bickering every week is getting slightly annoying to be honest.. I get your annoyed at NOA, you should be. They are so far behind in VC releases, it's annoying. But at same time, it seems like this is the only thing you come here to post about. So it tends to get little annoying to hear the same complain week after week. No offense.

I hope you buy other 3rd party releases too and not just look at what VC game was released. Support us indies! ;)

Well I've made my point and you have too. I'll try to stop complaining. Would just really like these games to be released. It's frustrating seeing them in other regions.

Not even counting the fact that NOA and NCL always have great sales too.

Indeed, there are a bunch of games available in other regions that I really want us to get over here.
Final Fantasy 1 and 6 especially.

Is there a point where gimmick posting can just be reported to a moderator?

Heh, I hope so.

It's one thing to be pushing such an agenda, but not in the blatant "ad nauseum" way that it's been communicated in this thread.

We get that you have a massive hate boner for NOA, so just shut up already, please.

The main thing that's bothered me is ignoring the great games that we have been getting in the process.

Let europe have a game before north america once or twice in their life ... they ALWAYS have worst than us =P

Next week on Japan eShop
Just as a suspected. I remember in the Wii Shop days you rarely saw releases of more than 4 games in a given week because there were 4 windows on the opening screen but isn't really what strikes me about the Wii U eShop list.

3 VC games, 1 eShop game. Typically in America it is the other way around of 3 indie games 1 VC game so a similar philosophy is still at play.

Even so the Wii U eShop front page constantly fails to spotlight new releases I feel...I think it is healthy to be interested in both original eShop content as well as old VC content but not to be too invested in either (so many WiiWare games never coming to Europe means I am only interested in eShop games when they have EU release dates).

Downloaded SteamWorld Dig yesterday, seeing as it was half price and I had some DDP credit.

I played it all day long. I just couldn't stop mining. Down and down and down I went. Hopelessly addicted.

👍 Game's great to the end. Loved it. I bought it during the March sale, but I would've paid full price for it. I'm just in the phase where my backlog is so huge that I end up waiting for sales to pick up games anyway…

Nintendo Enthusiast made a video talking about ZaciSa´s Last Stand, which is the game made by fellow gaffer Gulatica. Says good things about it

I like this kid from Nintendo Enthusiast. He´s pretty and dosent have an annoying voice, which is a rare quality among people who makes youtube videos about videogames...

He also talks about "The Letter" in this video, but i didnt watch that part
