Official Cute Moth Appreciation Thread

Hi guys!

Some larger moths do not have mouths and as such can not eat. They emerge from their cocoon and fly around and mate and die. Please keep this sad, yet noble fact in mind when thinking of moths.
Man, that's fucked.

Moths are indeed cute.

Most of the time, the dudes are the ones with the elaborate fringed antennae, since those are used to smell pheromones that the females usually secrete.

omg this thread. They are so cute! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this.

What are the pink and yellow ones called? I love them so much :)

Who knew moths would look so cute, lol. Awesome pics ponpo.

A question though, is that fur/hairs on the moth or that powdry stuff they always have?

Also, is ponpo a secret mod?

Fuck bugs, all of them. Burn them all please

We used to get a ton at my old work place. One time one flew in the break room and I had a blue flashlight (for whatever reason). It was on the table and every time I clicked the light on it would 'creak' it's head in the direction of the light without moving its body. Then I'd flick it off an it would go back to normal. So by flickering the light I could get it to dance.

Almost looks like a bird, it's amzing.

Hummingbird moths (I think they are also called phoenix moths) are amazing.

I first saw one about seven years ago during a lunch break at work. It was out in the Osakan sprawl on the lone piece of nature in the area. I watched it hover around a flower for like five minutes and couldn't figure out how the hell a hummingbird was getting by in such an urban area. It wasn't until I did a bit of research that I figured out it was a moth and not a bird. The way it is shaped makes it look completely like a hummingbird.

I found out that they are pretty plentiful here in Japan, I actually see them pretty often on some bushes right outside of my apartment block.

EDIT: Actually they are known as hawk moths, sphinx moths or hornworms.

Yay a moth appreciation thread! :D They are adorable if you stop and look at them. Butterflies are pretty ugly up-close with their long sucky mouth-things.

If I see moths in the house (especially big ones) I will try and grab them (with as little dust damage as possible) and put them outside :)

One day, I will solve the mystery of noctunal bugs like moths, and how they are drawn to bright lights.

I never realized how adorable moths are, is it really true that some of them have no mouths?

Or underdeveloped mouths. They literally can't consume nutrients. As an adult, the male will fly around, hump on a couple hot chick moths, and die of exhaustion. The female will attract some studly moth, get it on, and spend the rest of her life laying eggs. They live long enough to birth another generation, then die.

Kinda sad. :(

I get the fear of spiders but I advocate for people to keep them alive as long as you know which ones aren't poisonous because they hunt other bugs. I also consider moths to be ok but I would never consider them cute or cool looking until this thread.

so is there an official MothGAF now?

Used to keep these guys as pets. Birds and other elements usually get to caterpillars fast, so you'd rarely see the beautiful moths flying around. They're really fascinating and the slow moving caterpillars especially were interesting to study. They're the only creepy crawlies i can stand to be around.

what's sad about banging a few hot moths and dying? sounds like a fulfilled life.

lawl

So... um.... uh....

What's the difference between a moth and a butterfly?

How cute. What TV shows do moths like?

They don't seem too picky. Seriously, I just love how no matter how much I move around the moths are just like, "That's cool. I'm just gonna chill on your shirt till I get bored or a brighter light comes along."

I didn't think it was possible for insects to be cute but these moths are adorable. My mind isn't processing this well right now.

Even the caterpillars are cute

Omg it's wearing a jacket!!

I raised some moth crysalis once as a kid. It was weird I found two on the ground (is that normal for them to be there?) They were about an inch long each and honestly looked exactly like the Pokemon Kakuna. I put them in an old broken fish tank I had and waited...
...
The hatched into those larger, inch long moths and were powder white!^^ I have seen those fuzzy white caterpillers before (and let's be honest that fuzzy caterpillers are adorable) and I guess that's what thry become! I set those guys free and said "bye-bye!"

insects in general are awesome and moths are pretty cool when they're not flying in my face. I don't think there's anything too ostentatious around my immediate area though, probably just white-lined sphinx moths

I have strictly forbidden violence against moths when I'm around. I fucking love them. I'm pretty cool with insects (fuck mosquitoes though) but moths especially are not to be fucked with.
