My problem with the finale fight scene is that it really wasn't any different from the ones earlier in the season I mean Vanessa has a vision> They go to the location> They get ambushed by thralls> a fight ensues.

Hell Malcolm and Vanessa even finished off the Head Vampire in a very similar way in the first episode.

Also would it have killed them to make this Vampire look a bit different from the first one or hell even put up a semblance of a fight.

Well, it was the first series. I think the main plot was never really fleshed out enough because John Logan felt he needed to introduce each character properly with backstory and tie all those ends up. The show was sort of all over the place, not necessarily in a bad way, but it meant the main plotline never really got the focus it otherwise would.

I suppose next season will be different in that respect as they don't have to focus so much on each character's story and how they fit in. I suspect it will still go off in different directions, but at least they no longer have to bother with background.

What a great show. Eva Green just owns it, and I love the visuals and writing. The biggest surprise is Josh Hartnett who I always saw as a one note actor. Glad to see his accent in early episodes was just a ruse. He plays compassionate super well, and in the scene where he plays Vanessas demon he really pulls off that as well. Even the monster/creature who seemed unredeemable still managed to bring out sympathy in me. Loved it.

Only a couple of complaints. Frankenstein resurrecting the girlfriend of one of his comrades, the girl he smothered to death and could potentially remember it seems super dumb for someone so intelligent. Also Dorian Grey is super annoying. I hope he becomes a villian, and Vanessa rejecting him in such a brutal way was wonderfully executed.

Billie Piper's accent is sooooo bad. I really wish they'd have just cast an actual Irish person. Otherwise I really enjoy this show, the sets and clothes and stuff all look really great imo.

It's actually a fairly good Belfast accent, which is what they were going for. I wouldn't be against them having had someone with a genuine accent as though she does it well, it's a bit jarring coming from her instead of her "u wot m8" voice.

her teeth freak me out

Just marathonned all eight episodes over the past couple of nights.
Excellent start, full of intrigue and promise, then a seriously dull dip by time we reached episodes six and seven. The finale was a bit of a damp squib too, with some half-assed monsters who posed as much threat as angry children. And seriously, nobody in the theatre saw that fucker hanging from the rafters in plain sight all that time?

Somehow I still enjoyed it all, but then again I'm a sucker for Victorian Gothic. Hoping for a lot more from season two though.

PS: Hannah Tointon. Phwoooooooaaar! She never disappoints.

The thing with the pillow - she wanted it. It was a mercy.

what? no way man, yes she knew she was dying, but i doubt she wanted that
if anything she would want ethan to be at her side when she dies at the least
Tbh the way the scene was depicted it seemed to be implied that she wanted it to be ended early.

I hope Literary Roots is a nice long feature, but the fact that they saw fit to include two episodes of Ray Donovan (?) doesn't inspire confidence.

Penny Dreadful Men Field Burning Questions, Tease Season 2 'Bang-Fest'

Pretty fun seeing those three dudes interact with each other outside the show.

“In terms of the second season, I’ve written all but two of the episodes. So, the last two are yet to be written. So I’m well ahead of the game there, and the actors will all be getting it the end of this month."

There will be more supernatural creatures and the main characters will leave London in Season 2.

“The biggest change for me in the second season, beyond the fact that it’s ten hours as opposed to eight hours, is we have a human antagonist,” he says. “Last season, we sort of had the vampire, the generic monster. Now we have a human villain played by
Helen McCrory, who is Madam Kali in the, I hope memorable, séance episode earlier in the season.”

“Because this is my first TV show and I didn’t know if I’d be able to do it, I spent years thinking about it and charting out the cosmology, all the various forces of play around those characters,” Logan says. “I charted it up to the third season in terms of where I wanted to take the story, where I wanted to align to some of the classic novels that inspired it and some of the ways I wanted to variant those things.”

“The second season, for me, is, in a way, more joyous to write because I know the voices in my head, and I know where I want to challenge the actors, and I know where I want to play to their sweet spots,” he says with a laugh.

the fact that they saw fit to include two episodes of Ray Donovan

wait what?

*gag*

I was sort of 'meh' on the series in the first few episodes. It had some outstanding moments, but wasn't really going where I thought it would/wanted it to. But that episode where you learn of Vanessa and Mina's backstory turned me. Every episode after that was great. The 7th especially. Probably my favorite episode because it showed the core cast interacting in a way that I had been missing.

So I put this show on my Ipad to watch in the trains during my vacation. Watched it three times so far from beginning till end, absolutely loved it. The performances are stellar across the board. I am wondering one thing, Protheus seemed to remember pieces of his past but Caliban does not, I might have missed it but it does not appear to be explained.

But i cannot wait for season 2. Best new show of the year for me.

I wouldn't say it is great but it is at least passable. It sounds a bit like Billie Piper doing an impression of Gerry Adams. lol

That said, it is a Northern Irish accent, not an Irish accent.

And if you are wondering what Gerry Adams sounds like:

I think it's because Proteus was a "newer model", so he was a bit more refined and had "improved features" over Caliban.

Proteus was "fresh", the original was not. The Bride is going to have many of her memories intact, which means rejection incoming for the Fedora monster.

Also marathoned this over the weekend and really liked it. Glad they're going to 10 eps for S2, I think that's about the max a single writer could handle, and the show needs the extra breathing room.

i think Proteus was simply the corpse of a single person and when Frankenstein brought him back to life his memories returning was a revelation for Frankenstein..that a soul could be restored to its host body..that that had been his mistake with Caliban..combining the limbs of all those bodies when he infused it with life..it had no spirit or soul ..and was always gonna be an abomination

Ah, that's a very good point! I didn't think of that.

- THR: 'Penny Dreadful' Books Patti LuPone, Ups Two to Regular Status
Patti Lupone is heading to Showtime. The Broadway actress and TV fixture, who most recently had recurring gigs on American Horror Story and Girls, will appear in the upcoming season of Penny Dreadful.

Thus far only booked as a guest star, her addition marks one of several to the sophomore horror-drama. Actors Douglas Hodge, Sarah Greene and Jonny Beauchamp have also been added to in guest roles to the cast — and freshman recurring players Helen McCrory and Simon Russell have both been upped to regulars.

Lupone will play a mysterious character from Vanessa's (Eva Green) past. The Tony and Emmy winner is clearly invested in TV at the moment. She recently starred in Bruce Eric Kaplan's HBO comedy pilot alongside Sarah Silverman and Topher Grace, on which the network ultimately passed.

Penny Dreadful earned a bigger order for its sophomore season, getting 10 episodes after averaging 4.8 million weekly viewers across platforms. McCory and Russell will reprise their respective roles of Evelyn Poole and Ferdinand Lyle. Production begins in Dublin, Ireland, this month with a 2015 return planned on the network.

So I was watching some stuff on youtube and then a Penny Dreadful ad popped up but with the netflix logo. At the end of the ad was the 'A netflix original' thing. Did I miss something or is this something Netflix does on a region basis (The Netherlands in this case where Penny Dreadful hasn't aired on television as far as i know).

Looks region based. It's not too uncommon, HBO has promoted The Knick as their own show but it's actually from Cinemax.

I've noticed they've started tagging shows with that if they have an exclusive deal to stream it. Like with Knights of Sidonia for example. So if Netflix is the fist place you're able to see it in your region, that's probably why.

I haven't read through the thread to avoid spoilers for Season 1, but can someone please post a non-spoilery review/opinion of Season 1? I want to decide if I should jump into this series and just looking for some opinions. I don't have Showtime and am considering ordering the Season 1 blu-ray without having seen the show, should I?

Penny Dreadful is a great show, but it's also a very different kind of show than what you're probably expecting. There's very little action or outright horror (it's nothing like American Horror Story or The Walking Dead). It's a creepy, slow paced period piece filled with wonderfully flowery monologues, outstanding performances, and lavish set design. I thought it was one of the best shows of the year.

It's great, watch it. If you're not sold after the seance scene in episode 2 the show isn't for you.

- Maureen Ryan interview: 'Penny Dreadful' Creator On What's Next For The Engaging And Underrated Horror Show
With any luck, by the time Season 2 rolls around, people will have caught up with "Penny Dreadful" and learned that it is, like so many meaty genre shows, about an ad hoc family coming together to battle the evil that lurks -- both inside and outside the family.

"I know we turn people off with the provocation of the show, with the language of the show, with the period of the show," Logan said. "But I hope that people give the show a chance and get engaged with the characters in such a way that any preconceived notions they have about horror will become less important."

Logan spoke about why he thinks horror is having a resurgence, why the Victorians are more modern than you might think and what's ahead for Season 2. Be aware that some Season 1 plot points are mentioned.
