Noah.

Saw Beautiful Thing (1996). Sweet gay themed movie. It could have explored some of the things it introduced a bit further, but that wasn't really a negative. The main characters give very convincing performances. 7/10

One of the better gay movies I've seen so far.

Noah has some good visuals but it's mostly pretty forgettable. Definitely not one I'll see again.

I was never a fan of those Sherlock Holmes movies.

I hate the first SH, it's genuinely one of the worst movies I've ever seen. A complete waste of money and talent. But GOS is so many miles better than it it almost looks like a different franchise; it's a bit mindblowing how skillfully Ritchie and his crew righted the wrongs, at least in my opinion

Let's Be Cops

Wasn't half-bad. I actually did find some of the stuff funny

Life Itself

Gotta say, it was sometimes hard to watch during the hospital/rehab scenes. I do appreciate finding some laughter from the various clips they showed during the Siskel & Ebert days as well as from friend interviews. It's definitely worth watching

Noah

*the sound of me losing respect for Aronofsky*
Not that I was all that fond of him before.

The creation/evolution sequence was cool but I'm not giving the film even that much.

I wouldn't say the stupidity on display is too forgettable.

Continued my Carpenter kick by watching Prince of Darkness for the first time, and re-watching Escape from New York

Prince of Darkness is a really excellent mix of camp and horror, and I dug seeing a lot of Carpenter regulars like Donald Pleasance and some of the gang from Big Trouble. It's not top-tier Carpenter in my opinion (the lead actor is no Kurt Russell, and the pacing and cinematography isn't quite as exceptional), but the film is still an absolute blast. It combines freaky homeless people (including a great Alice Cooper cameo), an excellent Carpenter score, science vs religion cheese, and a balls to the walls 3rd act and brilliant ending.

Escape from New York definitely IS top-tier Carpenter, though. It's got that masterful pacing where scenes flow effortlessly into each other, punctuated by awesome one-liners or surprises and the thumping beat of the the score. I absolutely love the atmosphere of the green lit, detritus covered streets of the New York prison-city. Overall I prefer the horror-esque, man-on-a-mission, lone-wolfness of the first half, but the second half has plenty of stand out moments as well. It's just pure entertainment all the way through. As a bonus its got a fucking awesome cast, too: Kurt Russell, Donald Pleasance, Isaac Hayes, Ernest Borgnine, and Lee Van Cleef among others. This is probably my second favorite Carpenter film after The Thing.

Nymphomaniac is pretty good. shameless in its symbolism, but I think shrewdly so: the entire film is about making these metaphors and comparisons for Seligman/the viewer to understand Joe's plight. Fill all my holes, Fibonacci sequence, polyphony, Western and Eastern churches, ash trees, so on and so forth. Acts reduced to numbers and people to letters. At times it seems these allow us to understand Joe, but at the same time she criticizes this reduction. She's not a symbol, she's a person. to rigidly shape her life into an expression of "meaning" or "a quality of human nature" is violating even if it may seem empathetic. Plus, in the end,
we/Seligman still just want a fuck.
The whole thing is, characteristically for lvt, kinda just a sick smartly dumb joke. A great looking sick smartly dumb joke.

The Antichrist reference is hysterical.

Prince of Egypt still the goat biblical epic

Looks to stay that way going by the Ridley Scott cosplay movie

I don't know when the hell they are going to bring it on Bluray, It's going to look soooo good. I have to watch it every year a few times and it never gets boring. Amazing animation, Spectacular soundtrack and great voice acting just greatness all around. If only DreamWorks had it in them to do more animated films like that but eh one is better than nothing.

Let's just be greatful that they did what they did. No company especially an animated movie company would do something like that today.

Watched a bunch of movies, not going to list everything, but here's a sampler :)

Kind Hearts and Coronets
Classic British comedy, pretty funny even today.

La battaglia di Algeri
Amazing piece of realist cinema, never seen it in that scale. Interesting story, and still very relevant.

L'immortelle
Broke open my Robbe-Grillet box, and what a start! Marienbad light, great stuff, very crisp transfer.

Belle
Somewhat lesser known film by André Delvaux, atmospheric and surreal, very 70s.

Sale comme un ange (Dirty Like an Angel)
Catherine Breillat does some kind of policier, certainly not her best work but I liked the gritty atmosphere

Possession
A bit too much "out there" even for me... I guess this is Zulawski battling his demons, not sure an audience is part of that process.

Journey to the Seventh Planet
Low budget sci-fi that actually takes some ideas from Solaris for a weird spin.

Crna macka, beli macor (Black Cat, White Cat)
One big gypsy celebration, entertaining but vapid, not my scene really.

Sette note in nero (The Psychic)
Very restrained Fulci giallo, a bit confusing, and visually a bit disappointing.Jennifer O'Neill was pretty good tho.

Phase IV
Scientists versus intelligent ants! Very good 70s sci-fi, gets the atmosphere just right. Also that ending.

Deadly Blessing
A lesser Wes Craven, but it has an Amish Borgnine so it's a must-watch.

The Double
Started out great, but didn't feel it live up to its potential, but Ayode does future nightmarish bureaucratic distopia better than current-day Gilliam.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Well I don't care much about Captain America, now I remember why. Pure shit, no idea what you guys see in this, not sure if it is worse than the first because I have no recollection of it except for the 5/10 rating I gave it on IMDb.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Nice popcorn flick, I'm in the minority that enjoyed the first more.

Adult World
Charming little indie with a super cute Emma Roberts.

Dog Soldiers

Why. Sean Pertwee was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed the dialogue, but overall the movie was shitty. It was nice to see something that didn't look like a Hollywood movie for a change, although that wasn't always to this film's benefit.

Weird Science

I'm a huge sucker for 80s movies, and had never seen this one before. I liked it a lot. I thought it was charming, heartwarming, and funny. Then again, I really like John Hughes movies. From mutant bikers to neon lighting to a shitbag Robert Downey Jr character, what's not to love?

I kind of want to see every other movie Hughes directed/wrote now that I haven't yet seen, but I'm not sure I can handle Curly Sue. I have a hard time with James Belushi movies. She's Having a Baby might be alright?

I love Uncle Buck and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles quite a lot, so....I guess I could expect okay things?

I know I'm late to the game on this one, but The Fisher King was pretty great. Had that cinematography and general feel of a Terry Gilliam movie paired to the batshit wonder that is Robin Williams. Good stuff.

Agreed, and the Antichrist reference is crazy. Gave me some nervous laughter.

Watched Sexy Beast last night.

Probably Ray Winstone's best film. It's odd that he's kind of an arsehole by most standards but he's really a sympathetic character in the film. Ben Kingsly is just incredible in the movie as well, he has this psychotic, incredibly intimidating presence. The cast does a great job of really looking incredibly uncomfortable around him as well.

I can't find a good clip of it on youtube but the film has a really good dream sequence as well. Short, almost irrelevant to the plot but just creepy.

Captain America: Winter Soldier

Not due to come out on dvd/blu-ray until the 20th, but stores that get it early can apparently start selling early as i found out today (18th), picked it up while walking past a store. Watched it earlier (third time this year after two cinema visits). Would have to say this was my most anticipated movie of 2014, i enjoyed it but it's still a flip of a coin as to which i loved more out of this and X-Men Days of Future Past.

Nil by Mouth would be a strong contender.

Romeo & Juliet: 8/10. The 1968 version directed by Rocco Siffredi, it was very very good. I think mostly because of how incredibly smoking hot both the two lead actors were, which seems like a fine reason to rate this material highly. And because it was the late 60s, after it was prohibited but before it became unfashionable, there's even tits. Awww yisss.

Captain America WS: Didn't like it much. But I'm not a fan of most marvel movies in general. I just found it to be mostly silly and lame. The action was alright but having seen the Raid 2 fairly recently I think I've been a bit spoiled.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Finally saw this last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. It was quite tense at times, particularly earlier in the movie, and I felt that the apes were very well done this time around. Only thing I can really fault the movie for is that it seemed very predictable. But everything was executed really nicely.

Saw this in school, teacher fast forward the tits...I was really looking forward to that

I watched Sleepwalk with Me last night, as I was in need of something relatively-short (80 minutes) and absolutely loved it. It might be somewhat unwelcoming to people unfamiliar with Mike Birbiglia's comedy, but I thought it was very well done.

Great moment to see in my freshmen year of HS.

That's an insult to Hermione. :\ She wouldn't have put up with that shit. Well, not book Hermione at least. Of course, I get you are saying Emily Watson doesn't have a lot of range.

She was practically Meryl Streep standing next to Logan Lerman, whose continued casting in any film is baffling when he's clearly fucking horrendous at his job as an actor.

Dude's got that same bewildered look that seems to be his automatic reaction to anything that happens.

The Big Lebowski - Look, man, I've got certain information, all right? Certain things have come to light. And, you know, has it ever occurred to you, that, instead of, uh, you know, running around, uh, uh, blaming me, you know, given the nature of all this new shit, you know, I-I-I-I... this could be a-a-a-a lot more, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, complex, I mean, it's not just, it might not be just such a simple... uh, you know?

Carnage
The best compliment I could give it is that I did not want the film to end. Superb acting by all four leads combined with one of the funniest and sharpest screenplays in the last few years made it a great watch. The vomit scene and Waltz's general mannerisms were hilarious.

Bad Grandpa
I was skeptical going in, but I have to admit by the end I was howling with laughter. Some scenes didn't work as well as could be but most of them were hilarious. There are so many highlights in the film including; the little miss show, the pothead dad and biker gang, the diner scene and that male strip bar club. Potty humour at it's peak and one of the funniest films of it's type since Borat burst in.

I just watched Kingdom of Heaven. Never seen it before now but picked up the Blu Ray at my local for 5 Euros.

I had heard a lot of bad things about this film but I have to say I really enjoyed it, even though it was 3 hours long I never got bored. Everyone in it was pretty good, especially Edward Norton as the King. Orlando Bloom was a bit dour but I suppose that was to be expected given his backstory. Also it was absolutely beautiful to look at, especially on Blu Ray, there were shots that looked liked paintings.

Having half the cast of Game of Thrones didn't hurt, also it's nice when Jeremy Irons decides not to be awful at acting :)
