Carnage is so much fun. I should watch it again.

Everyone loves the Director's Cut. Incredibly awesome and epic.

Oh yea? It was actually the Directors Cut that I watched, is it a massive improvement on the original version?

She was practically Meryl Streep standing next to Logan Lerman, whose continued casting in any film is baffling when he's clearly fucking horrendous at his job as an actor.
Even if he was a good actor, it was a shit character so not much to work with.

The Fisher King

I believe this was my first Terry Gilliam film. The direction and performances kept it interesting but that story, woof. Judging by the screenwriter, Gilliam must have done the best he could given the material.

Edit: Actually, not my first Gilliam film. Naturally, I've seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and I watched Twelve Monkeys back in the day.

hmm Carnage. gonna pop it in for the 100th time one of these days. Polanski hit a titanic one-two with that and Ghost Writer. Gotta watch Venus in Fur still

The surprising thing about Hell Comes to Frogtown isn't that the title is entirely literal, or that it features Roddy Piper in a government-issued chastity belt that's rigged to explode, or that Rory Calhoun plays a uranium miner named Looney Tunes, or there are human-sized frog mutants that have on a fez or an eye patch, or that our heroes drive around in a pink ambulance with a mounted machine gun. No, the surprising thing is that it's actually a really fun film that includes all of these things, has rapid-fire pacing, and it has a villain with three dicks. Ridiculous in all the right ways.

Saw Shelter (2007). Amateurish, shallow, corny, and visually bland. It's surprising this gets mentioned in best gay themed movies lists, but I guess the bar is not very high. 4/10

I think the concept of gay parenting is an interesting one; if only it was handled by someone with talent.

Also saw Head On (1998). A movie about an douchebag unable to accept his sexuality. That's all it is and all it says repeatedly over its run time. In a way it reminds me of Shame, but at least with that movie you got the sense that there was depth to it, and that it wasn't dealing with its subject just for show. There was one interesting character though. 5/10.

boyhood was.. good .. i liked it .. it ticked the right boxes

ethan hawke is really likable

nothing really revelatory tho

"i thought there'd be more" hit me hard

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)- Really good movie, well acted, well shot, and well directed. The story is really basic, but that works here. The characters however are really complex and that works here also. Give it a watch.

Really enjoyed The Apartment. Jack Lemmon was fantastic in it. Loved how it was able to deal with a heavy subject like depression while still being an effective romantic comedy. 9/10

Manhunter

Acceptable, I guess. I find it perplexing that someone could consider this better than The Silence of the Lambs. The protagonist in this is as compelling and interesting as a bag of rocks. The dialogue is bad and Brian Cox is underused. The second half is more compelling than the first, with Tom Noonan's increased presence. As dumb as the climax is, I liked it because of Mann's style. The soundtrack is the best and the worst of the 80's.

Okay. You've sold me.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Just to get this out of the way, I'm not a big fan of Marvel movies. I really enjoyed the first Iron Man and had good fun with The Avengers. But pretty much anything else I've seen from the semi-recent Marvel movie explosion has been unimpressive at best. Even though that's my general opinion on these movies I was still looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy. Even though it's supposed to be a superhero movie the trailers never really left the impression it was. It seemed to be more of a sci-fi movie with a team of weird individuals on their way to save the world. Correction, the universe. And having seen the movie now I can say that was really what it felt like to me. And on top of that there's a boat load of humor that really worked for me. Especially Drax the Destroyer got some good laughs out of me. I guess it also helped that the team is made up of a likeable group of characters each with their own crazy perks. I think this may be actually my favourite Marvel movie to date and I'm really curious to check out the comics now. And I certainly wouldn't mind a sequel with these guys. Not that I'm worried there won't be one seeing the major success this film is in cinemas.

8/10

You really find Petersen's Graham boring? I wonder what you'll think (or do) of Norton's portrayal then...

I think the former plays the character really well, and I still have him over Dancy (but it could change with future seasons of the show).

Watched this movie today, IMAX - 3D, The only way for it to be seen.

GOTG was absolutely fantastic all around probably my favorite Marvel film so far, never read the comics by the way. Didn't expect it to be this funny as well, Everyone did a great job on it especially Dave Batista who is mostly known for WWE, surprised me in the movie. Aside from the visuals, acting, set pieces and great chemistry between the main cast my absolute favorite thing about the film is the soundtrack being entirely focused on Starlord's mix tape which is made up of songs from the 70's and 80's, all I had was eargasms during the movie.

Absolutely worth seeing on the big screen for anyone who is having any doubts. The movie reminded me of Mass Effect, Star Wars and a good road-trip comedy movie except in space all rolled up into one. The only things I was disappointed in
was that there was no back story or alot of depth in the characters, we only got to see a little bit of Thanos and I felt the movie was too fast in the beginning but then things got normal which is good, fantastic title sequence to the movie though.
I cant choose a favorite, everyone from the main cast was awesome in their own special way especially Groot, Rocket Racoon and Drax when they are together.
Also I got goosebumps when Groot and Rocket Racoon were massacring the people in the prison rotating 360 degrees as they both scream, one of my favorite scenes in the movie and this movie has alot of it!
Got choked up also at the end when Groot said, " We are groot " I don't know why but that whole sacrifice scene brought back The Iron Giant feels.

In the end all I could say is " AAAAHHHHHH HAAAA AHHHHHHH AHHHHHAAAAAA HOOKED ON A FEELING, IM HIGH ON BELIEVING... "

Enjoyed the movie alot, Definitely worth seeing for those who still didn't.

Yeah, forgot to mention that the soundtrack is absolutely ace. That Bowie scene, so good. And Hooked on a Feeling keeps sticking. I find myself surfing to Mixtape Volume 1 on youtube quite often the past few days.

I saw this film at the BFI IMAX in London by the way. Apparently the biggest they have in the UK. And I must say, this screen was absolutely much bigger than I had ever seen before in the Netherlands. Really improved the overall movie experience.

I have been watching Spielberg's movies a lot lately, and is it me or he really likes his movies to have their own amount of sillyness and dumb stuff? He either pulls off interesting bits, while balancing it with cringe-worthy scenes. My memory is a little foggy on this, but at least I remember that he took himself seriously on Schindler's List, so I see he excels when he really wants to.

Saw Sin City. I know it's liked by many; I don't get it. I watched the extended edition (which I think alters the order of the stories), but I think I would have disliked it regardless of version. I hate its narration, dialogue, and most of the performances. Its visual style was interesting for about 10 minutes. The noir elements felt more like a cheap parody than anything else.

Also, it being extreme did nothing for me, and got boring really fast. A lot of nothing. 4/10.

Just saw Garden State. It was alright. I could see why everyone calls it the quintessential indie flick but I didn't really care for the characters. Zach Braff's character felt detached from the film so I could never really connect with him. I didn't find Natalie Portman's character charming. I get that she's supposed to be quirky, but she mostly came off as annoying to me. The directing was pretty interesting. I liked the scene where he sat on the couch while everyone partied around him. I can appreciate what this film sets out to do but I think its been outclassed by the modern indies that build upon its structure. B-

I found Sin City terrible when I first saw it in theaters. The narration is so painful and captain obvious, it really doesn't make sense when in a movie you know what's happening visually rather than on the comic awaiting the next page. So slavish to the comic that it makes me realise when perfect adaptations from a different medium doesn't work. I only liked Rourke as Marv because of his physical presence. Bruce Willis was forgettable, Clive Owen has the worst lines. Right there with you on the noir feeling like a parody, and not even poking fun at itself like in videogames (Max Payne).

The new one doesn't sound too good, either.

The problem I've always had with Rushmore is that it feels like it's building to something far more sinister and dark than what actually transpires. It's a testament to how well the actors perform that you can sometimes ignore that, and certainly, the dialogue that both Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson wrote isn't as fault, but this is probably the one Wes Anderson film that suffers from being a Wes Anderson film.

I've always maintained that the biggest problem with Sin City is Robert Rodriguez. He just doesn't have the kind of discipline to make a concept like the comic come to life in all the aspects that should matter. He's so preoccupied with making it look like the comic that he thinks that's good enough, so you get all those lousy performances from most of the cast, where they really needed to have someone behind the camera, you know, directing them. Pulpy dialogue always dies verbally when you can't get people to commit, and besides a visibly inebriated Michael Madsen (well, I could just Michael Madsen on its own, I suppose...), you've got a whole lot of decent-to-good actors who can't make it work and it's not their fault at all. They're just doing what they're told, which amounts to little more than "look at panel 5 on this page, aaaaaaand ROLLING!" Long story short: when you find a way to waste Rutger Hauer, who is playing a cannibalistic clergyman, you done fucked up.

I couldn't. Why do a huge disservice to so many films that aren't garbage? Granted, it's also the first time I've heard 'quintessential' and 'Garden State' in a sentence.

I watched Sin City the other day with the commentaries on and it was hilarious when Quentin popped out of nowhere, like Rodriguez is so calm and then in the middle he introduces Quentin and BOOM! he just starts talking like crazy, well the usual for Tarantino :lol

The movie was way better when you have Rodriguez talking over it, I don't like his films but he's really fun to listen to. The way he shot the movie gave him so much time to work on everything, felt like a dream environment for a director.

Sin City is horrendous, incredibly boring, predictable, fake ass edgy shit. i fell asleep several times waiting for Dawson's legs to get a close up but they never did

the comic book is good, at least

Aren't all Rodriguez movies parodies of some kind?

Meanwhile:

Malificent
Didn't really enjoy this one, pretty predictable and somewhat slow, and what's with the princes being cockblocked in these recent Disney movies (Frozen and this one specifically)

Journey to the Far Side of the Sun
Very slow sci--fi movie with a big focus on launching preparations and docking manoeuvres, this felt as a kind of transitional sci-fi between the pulp of the 60s and the heady post-2001 stuff from the 70s.

Tootsie
I'm going to watch every movie Dustin Hoffman has ever appeared in. But GOD MY EARS MAKE IT STOP.

This sounds up my alley. Thanks.

There is a Bowie scene? I should see this.

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky - Waited years to see this based on a few clips and it did not disappoint. I don't think even my anticipation prepared me for the shit that goes down in this movie. If you like Kung fu, bad dubs, and absurd levels of violence on a low budget- I ask that you see Ricki.

The Last Stand

Entertaining despite the really hokey script. The final fight was pretty weak; poorly shot hand-to-hand combat with distracting CGI.

Yeah it was entertaining but average. I enjoyed it only because of Arnold which of course is every other persons reason for enjoying or wanting to see the movie lol.

I loved Riki the first time i saw it and, incredibly, it grew on me even more with time, beyond simply how silly it is.

I think the dystopian mood at the beginning, for example, is kind of cool.

I've always had a thing for the "dystopian future prison" concept, and Riki Oh has some of that.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington hasn't aged a bit. Filled with wonderful speeches and conflicts all throughout. 10/10

Watched The Bicycle Thief and really enjoyed it. A sad story about a dad put in a shitty situation that builds to a memorable last scene.9/10

Truely awful soundtrack, made some scenes really way too corny where they shouldn't have been.

ha, I can agree with that. I thought you were referring to Hoffman's feminine voice as Tootsie

movie is one of my favourite comedies ever. So hilarious

Sin City 2

It was amazing. It is as good as the first one, some parts are even better. It's more stylish, some shots are amazing, i felt that dialogue was more grounded.
As stories go, I think the best ones are Gordon-Levit's and Alba's. The one with Eva Green was also good, but i didn't really like Eva. She's beatiful and naked almost all the time, but except of couple of lines i didn't like her character and something about her face/makeup rubbed me the wrong way, her body is amazing, but face is too skinny, or it's CGI talking.
I like Mickey Rourke, Joseph Gordon-Levit and to my surprise Jessica Alba. Honorable mentieons - Jeremy Piven and Christopher Meloni.
Overall Sin City 2 = Sin City. I would reccommend it, i liked it even more than Guardians of the Galaxy. It could use a little more runtime, movie flew by.
And oh my god, that Alba's dance at the end, the way she moved, the music, fucking amazing.
8/10.

Entertaining despite the really hokey script. The final fight was pretty weak; poorly shot hand-to-hand combat with distracting CGI.

Yeah, that CG backdrop was tremendously awful. It was even worse, given the fantastic car chase through the cornfield that preceded it.

Watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit last night with my son. It's probably been 5 years since I last watched it, but - boy is it fun.

It borrows competing children's intellectual properties and uses them to forward a who-done-it PG movie about addiction, sex, grief, corruption, and redemption. To take such a dark premise and balance that with the hijinks that allows for a younger audience was just a joy.

It's an impossible movie to make these days.

On a separate note we got a babysitter to see The Giver Saturday night. Reviews make it to be a disappointment, but we always eat after seeing the movie - and we figure it will make for a rousing book vs film conversation even if it fails. Anyone see it already?

Edge of Tomorrow (Tom Cruise).

Expected it to be boring, but it's easily one of my favorite sci-fi movies of all time.

Snowpiercer, didn't know what to expect. Just use your suspension of belive, but the movie should be treated more as fantasy than sci-fi. The grim beginning had some turns later on, so I didn't know if I should take it too seriously or just for a few laughs. Good setups though, 3.5/5

Kick-Ass 2 was much tamer than the first one, they toned down the violence by a lot, not that I liked it in the first, I didn't. This one the story was more boring and less kick-ass. 2/5

Carrie (2013) was called a useless remake not without a reason. They just prolonged the final "showdown" just to add some more action, the other parts with the psychological struggles were just underdeveloped. Time to watch the original. 2.5/5

Standard and competent biopic I guess, but Lovelace is just that, the standard, nothing outstanding or particularly, 3/5

Time to watch some Robin WIlliams' movies that sometimes have been shown on TV lately.

Chef - Ya know, for a vanity project, this one's pretty good. Favareau may never be accused for an eye for style, but he's got an ear for bickering, like Barry Levinson. Plays well with others. Most unbelievable thing is Sofía Vergara being married to him, I mean yeah right

I really liked Chef, very feel-good movie.
