Owners of both consoles: Does Xbone OS makes you prefer it over PS4?

Sony does need to add the ability to create your own layout. Seems like it just puts your most recently used games/apps up front.

If prefer to have my games grouped together.

It does... however it also bumps up your most recently updated games/apps too. Which is annoying.

Looking forward to getting PS3 style folders back, so I can put shit where I want. Xbox One needs Windows Phone style folders too, because I'm going to end up with too many pins over time.

I pre-ordered the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and have enjoyed them both.
I have owned all three Xbox consoles and all four PlayStation consoles. I have friends on each; I think I am rather impartial in this regard.

If Microsoft can ever truly get the specs on games to be similar to Sony, I will buy third-party games on the Xbox One - because I like its controller better.

But I do NOT like the current Xbox One dashboard/OS. Really, at any one time, I'm mostly just interested in the same small handful of games & apps. So the Sony crossbar is great for me. I feel like I'm going on a mini-scavenger hunt with the Xbox One as it is now - even with stuff "pinned."

Love Microsoft's focus on apps, though: Twitch, YouTube, etc. I'm finding more interesting things on the internet because of the Xbox One.
But yeah - I want Share Play on XB1 so I can lurk/help my Xbox One-only friends.

Depends what it is you do. TV, snapping, video chatting etc, then obviously Xbox One is better since the PS4 mostly lacks this functionality, but for general speed (installing, updating, loading etc), screenshots, web browsing etc, the PS4 is better and generally much quicker.

I disagree on web-browsing. I definitely prefer the Xbox IE browser. Also installing/updating may be faster, but being unable to pause any (sometimes huge) downloads makes that a tie at best imo.

Yes, I buy multiplatform games on Xbone and use it as my media center. PS4's UI is a mess and still no remote control options for Blu Ray/Netflix LOL

There's a bunch of things that bug me about the PS4, mostly how many weird little inconsistencies and special-cased kludges there seem to be around how apps are handled, and how awkward managing your installed stuff is. Media apps get their special-snowflake little folder thing, while nothing else does. The folder has placeholders for apps you don't have installed, and there's no way to filter it down just to the stuff you want to see. It doesn't, however, have icons for Sony's own media services, because they're special enough that they have to clog up your main bar, even if you've never wanted to or even thought about using them.

Then there's the Library, which lists everything you've got installed and, you would think, lets you manage your Library of games (and apps). Except it doesn't, because disc-based games don't show up there. And you can't actually manage anything there anyway, if you want to uninstall anything you have to go find it in the main bar, wherever it's ended up, or go digging into the storage management UI in the settings.

And then there's stuff like the apparent lack of extensibility - the Capture Gallery opens up a standard system-level menu, just like the ones you get in the settings, trophies, friends, etc menus. But it lives in the main app bar, not the system menu bar, for no apparent reason.

And then there's ShareFactory, which I have no real interest in using at all, but because they don't have an app store, their only option for surfacing new apps is by shoving a placeholder download icon into your main bar that you can't get rid of (although if I'm not mistaken, there's no way to capture a shorter-than-max-length clip, so I'll probably end up having to use it to trim clips down at some point, now that the capture function seems to be working semi-reliably).

God fucking help them if they try to shove sodding SingStar at me again.

Some people might not like the XB1's "everything is an app" approach, but at least it makes it goddamn consistent, and the list of uninstallable system apps is the absolute bare minimum (Xbox Music and Xbox Video, for example, are completely optional downloads).

On the upside, I'll grant that the PS4 UI is nice and snappy.

My theory would be they rushed the console to launch at the same time as the XB1 while also deciding to add the resume/suspend feature late into development.

But they said they'd have suspend/resume at the PS4 announce event, nine months before launch and three months before the XB1 was anything more than rumour and speculation.

I have tried the PS4 and I will admit it was very snappy, but after a fresh reboot the Xbox feels the same. As others have mentioned, I suspect it has something to do with the suspend and resume that sometimes makes the Xbox feel sluggish, but this is easily fixable by killing the game that was running. Overall, I think the Xbox OS is miles ahead of PS4. I'm watching T.V. as we speak and just noticed one of my buddies coming online so I quickly invited him to a party and we are about to play Titanfall. These type of features is what really separates Xbox from the PS4.

Fair enough on the last point. Though sometimes the PS4 completes installs in less than 1/10th the time as the Xbox One, so pausing may not be as big of a deal or requirement depending on the situation. Regarding web browsing, I believe Anandtech tested both and found the PS4 to be 2 to 5 times faster.

For me personally the web browsing is better on PS4 because of the better support for M&KB and also because its the only one that supports bluetooth mouse and keyboard. I play FFXIV with my BT mouse and keyboard connected and often check locations of items and quests on the browser.

But yeah the browser itself on the PS4 is no good. If it wasn't for mouse and keyboard I would wish I could just delete the browser icon altogether. On the other hand, not being able to use m&kb for browsing the web makes the xbox one browser basically useless to me because how do you even browse the web efficiently without those things?

I love all the functionality the XB1 OS offers. I can turn it on and do so many things right there. Play a game, watch tv, watch Twitch, watch a YouTube video, rent a movie, etc.

They've also got all the basics covered, unlike the PS4 which still doesn't even notify you when friends come online.

I really do enjoy the speed of the PS4 OS, but I would gladly trade that speed for full functionality. Still, even with all that said, I ultimately want my games to look and run their best, so I buy multiplatform games on the PS4.

I will never understand why some of you are so eager on so many os features.
If i want a OS that does loads of stuff ill turn on my PC.
I might watch a TV show or two but otherwise im ingame 99.9% and aslong as Party Chat is working and there are no OS breaking bugs i barely even notice the OS.

Why wouldn't you want a machine that can do it all? Isn't that what everybody is striving for? One of the reasons I was waiting on getting an XB1 is because the thing takes up a lot of real estate between the box, power brick and Kinect. But you know what takes up more space? Having both my PS4 and 360 hooked up just so I can have access to all of the things I use on a daily basis because the PS4 lacks so many apps.

As a lowly Comcast customer the Xfinity app on the 360 is a fucking godsend as I have access to everything I subscribe to on cable without having to shell out for another cable box. Sony never bothered with anything like that last gen (they're just now getting HBO Go which is just sad) so I'm not expecting them to get it this time either. So for now the 360 will stay plugged in til I eventually get an XB1.

For how long did you have your PS4?

So being able to watch TV is what the PS4 needs? No thanks. I have a... TV... for that.

There are definitely some gaming functions that the PS4 is missing but when I turn on my PS4 I want to play video games. Honestly, if the ps4 didn't play bluray movies, music, browse the web, I wouldn't give a shit. I have a dozen other devices that do the exact same thing. In a much more convenient way.

Both are pretty shit too be honest. The latest update for the xbox one scared the poop out of me, it wa just sitting at the xbox one logo for over a minute, and then a black screen for another minute or two. Thought It was dying.

I would take the Xbox One OS any day of the week over PS4 if it was snappier and faster, it feels slow and when typing text, it just doesn't feel snappy enough and lags a bit. Also, the boot time is very long, almost double PS4.
Otherwise, i love it, it's fully featured and works all the time, especially the recording which is broken on PS4. I feel stupid yelling ''Xbox record that'' in front of friends but hey, it works !

I also like when selecting a game on the store, i can see videos of people who played the game, twitch videos, description and very cool stuff like that.

PS4 is fast though and i will give Sony that but otherwise it needs some very very important features. Not seeing who's online, can't pause downloads, ads, weird errors when accessing the store, resume...

That may be true... I've never done any sort of benchmarking on either. I do wonder what was being tested though. I doubt it was 2 to 5 times faster at simply loading pages, as I've never noticed any significant speed difference between the two.

I was more focused on the "better" part of your post, rather than the "faster" part though. The Xbox One's browser, outside of Flash support, generally performs exactly like it does in Windows 8. Any page I got to correctly identifies the browser as Internet Explorer, and renders as I would expect. Browsing to NeoGAF on the PS4 browser however, will throw me to the mobile site, presumably because it has no clue what a PS4 is. I'm not sure if there's a way to force the PS4 to report itself as a certain browser type or not, but going off my experiences with both, I'll choose the Xbox browser over the PS4 browser every time. It's also got good integration with Smartglass, which once again has no Playstation equivalent on my chosen phone platform (WP8).

It's also snappable... which would be a nice bullet point if I could ever think of a good use for it.

For me personally the web browsing is better on PS4 because of the better support for M&KB and also because its the only one that supports bluetooth mouse and keyboard. I play FFXIV with my BT mouse and keyboard connected and often check locations of items and quests on the browser.

Mouse+KB support is actually a pretty good point, I hadn't really considered that. I have my PC hooked up to the same TV as my consoles, so I only tend to use the browser for very brief/simple things generally.

I really like the XBone OS, but I'm always going to buy the multiplats on PS4. I can't knowingly spend the same amount of money for an inferior version of a game.

I owned and sold an xbone due to my dislike of the OS.

I'm thinking about picking up the Destiny bundle on 9/9. I think that as long as PSN makes it easier to get into parties and play games together than the xbone I'll prefer it.

Can anyone offer any insight into this?

I just like how frequently how they have improved the OS. It is so much different and better than it was at launch. The Suspend/resume and having many games digital makes it really easy to bounce around from title to title or when playing games and the wife says dinner is ready, it is so useful to just say "Xbox Watch TV" and we are watching our shows, then when we are done it's just a "Xbox go to whatever game". It is just snappy and nice. For these reasons, I do use it a lot more than my PS4.

That's the difference though... WHEN you turn your PS4 on. The thing is the Xbox OS is actually making playing games more convenient. Sure if you're already thinking "I'm going to jump on the PS4 and play some Destiny, whilst seeing if Bob is on and wants to play too", then it's not a big deal. But if Bob's just randomly jumped online, for the first and only time this week, and can just invite you at any point when you're on your couch in front of the TV, then it makes you far more likely to actually play with the people you want to. It's especially helpful if you're already playing Destiny that the console actually let's you know Bob just came online...

Oh yes for sure, I am currently playing Diablo 3 on Xbox One and hollyshit, that Suspend/Resume feature is coming in handy BIG BIG time. I can't imagine how people are playing it without this now.

With, you know, a pause button? And when I'm done playing the game, I ... turn my console off?

I like the One OS but Not the gestures. At all. They are awful. I use voice quite a lot but I definitely need to troubleshoot it. It often fails to listen. I just moved though so acoustics need to be adjusted for. I also have a few apps on it I use.

I like the PS4 cause it's simple. I don't have a lot of apps and I play mostly discs so I don't have a long line of stuff to sort through. I like that downloads on it are super speedy.

For how long did you have your PS4?
As I mentioned, I tried it, I don't own one. I played mostly need for speed rivals mostly and prob spent 20 mins total with the console to mess around.
So being able to watch TV is what the PS4 needs? No thanks. I have a... TV... for that.

It's the whole experience really. The xbox is my media center. I watch movies, tv, skype people and of course play games. The way the OS puts it all together is amazing in my opinion.

Currently I prefer the PS4 over the Xbox but mine isn't a fair opinion since I've only owned the later for 2 months (and don't have that much time on it).

What I don't like is that I'm still having to go "where is this?" on the Xbox since some of the stuff isn't in an obvious (to me at least) location.

Overall functionality I like them both though in regards to going to the menu from a game. I lean towards the PS4 a bit for notifications and the suspend resume seems neat on the Xbox but I haven't utilized it yet.

Not at all. The X1 OS is all flash imo. The App system is very unresponsive and sluggish, and things take forever to open. It has a lot of functionality, but the functions are all very slow. I would like it better than the ps4 OS, If my apps didnt crash every other day and I didnt have to empty the cache constantly. The only thing that is god tier on the system is suspend/resume which is flat out amazing. Overall the OS is very slow and sluggish still. Ironically enough, it could use one of the many "Stability" updates that the PS4 keeps fucking getting lol.

And I don't disagree with the Bob scenario, in fact I miss the Bob scenario whenever I turn on the Xbone/last gen systems - I'd consider that part of my statement where I said there are definitely gaming functions missing on the PS4.

What I think is silly though is when people in these threads say things like, the Xbone OS is sooooo much better cause I can snap nfl scores to the screen while I watch an episode of once upon a time, or I LOVE surfing the web with my controller instead of using the tablet or PC or whatever I own. These are the exact distractions that I am looking to avoid with the few hours a week I have to game, and the precise services that distract investments from being made towards the next great game that ends up being passed on for priorities.

I don't like the black on the Xbone

It's painfully boring to look at. Needs theme support. Or at least wallpapers

Not to detract from the advantages of XB1's friends system, but in your specific example, I assume most people with a PS4 also have the PS app on their phone, which supports push notifications. Even if I'm not using my PS4, or in another room, they can message or invite me to play a game and my phone lets me know so I can hop on.

The OS on the XB1 is way ahead of the PS4's but I still buy all of my games on PS4 so no the OS does not make me like it more than the PS4. I will say that having over 26 games on my PS4 I am actually thinking about uninstalling some from the HD just to get rid of all of those damn tiles...... ugh.

I really don't care for the xbone's os. It's not to say that it isn't better than what the ps4 offers right now, but if I want htpc stuff, I have a htpc. If I want console only releases, it's ps4. The only thing the xbone gets playtime on is xbox exclusives.

I have a PS4 and I always stop to ode an XO if I stop by a video game or electronics store. That UI makes me jelly, it feels far more modern.

It's not a big enough deal to tip the scales for me though. It's not like I spend a lot of time in the console UI anyways.

I love having both. They're each awesome in their own way.

I like the interface on Xbone better (Windows 8 or w/e), I like the placement of the analogue sticks better (stop hurting my left thumb DSIII) . . . but the single greatest next-gen experience I've had so far was . . . playing Don't Starve!

And the Wii U has its moments, too. Dat ZombiU. . . .

Yes.

The suspend/resume, online notifications, voice controls, activity center, and being able to switch from tv to game instantly make me buy most of my games on the Xbox.

Mirror this sentiment also adding that party chat is so much crispier and cleaner and recording videos in games is a breeze and never takes me out. Still though I still buy my multiplats on ps4 due to the graphical disparities.

I even enjoy the controller for Xbox more plus I have to charge the battery a fifth as often.

+1 to all of that.

Interesting side note is that most people I know owned 360's and haven't bought next/current gen yet but have all basically said they're planning on just getting the new Xbox. So as far as where my friends will be, most will be PC/Xbox.

I do enjoy gaming on both systems and PC for the record.

And I don't disagree with the Bob scenario, in fact I miss the Bob scenario whenever I turn on the Xbone/last gen systems - I'd consider that part of my statement where I said there are definitely gaming functions missing on the PS4.

Sure, I can understand if that stuff is of no importance to you, but I don't think it's fair to claim it's silly because its important to others. You mention having limited time to do things, and that's one of the reasons some people will value these features. During the World Cup I was having the Brazil Now app update me with what was happening in each game (unsnapped, via notifications), as I was interested in the scores, but didn't feel like actually watching each game. Sure, I could have used one of my many other devices to keep track of this, but that would have required me to frequently stop looking at the game I was playing in order to check on any updates. I was already staring at the TV, so this became the most convenient place to have these updates sent. I don't think its silly to like that the OS has the required flexibility to juggle multiple things you may be interested in, whilst you play games or watch shows. If it's not for you, then you simply disable them.

True I guess, but that doesn't really help me. :P

Does the Playstation app allow you to alter your online status though? Most people probably wouldn't bother to invite you, if you didn't appear to online and ready to accept. Which is another thing that's useful really. The Xbox OS keeps me ready to accept various stuff when people try to reach me. If you skype call me and I'm playing on the PS4 (or even PC), chances are I'm not going to answer because I can't do that without interrupting my current activity.

I don't own a X1, but will likely in the near future.

The PS4 UI is plain, but snappy - this will be controversial, but I actually liked the X360 interface better than the PS4's... Which by default I guess would make the X1 interface (in current form), far better than the PS4's I imagine.

Having owned both, I can say I do not like the X1 UI. It feels like I'm beta testing an unfinished GUI. Sony's, while it has it's faults, at the very least feels like a finished product.

Nope. Suspend/resume is a useless feature for somebody that turns off their console and the extra media features, Kinect and TV integration are all useless to me - all I need is Amazon instant and Netflix. I will say that I do prefer it aesthetically to the ps4 UI but I've always been one of the few people that really likes metro.

What I really like about the ps4 os is its speed. I can boot up my ps4 start a game and load up a save file before my Xbox One is finished booting up. It generally feels much faster and snappier than the Xbox One UI. It's also crashed fewer times on me. What I don't like is the really bland look of it (worse than the ps3 imo - at least let the colors change) and it's lack of organization.

Quite the opposite. I have apps hang constantly. Find myself clearing the caches pretty often.

My friend just told me a tip for that the other day. If you press LT, RT, and Y when you're at the Home screen it resets the dashboard and closes all the apps. It doesn't take a long time or anything. I use it every time before starting up a game. Give it a try!

I don't like the black on the Xbone

You, me, and Phil agree!

if anything it makes me hate the damn thing.

The Bone's OS blows.

Makes me not want to play it.

I think the XB1's UI is trash so no. I prefer the PS4's by a good country mile.

The OS is not a plus

Would you all mind explaining why?
