Owners of both consoles: Does Xbone OS makes you prefer it over PS4?

Yes but then again, I don't like that. It's a personal feeling, and I get that some people can be okay with it or even find it useful. But I don't. It's my fucking system, and I want to see my content on it. I'm a big boy, and if I want to see the recent releases, I can go in the store myself, or just read GAF or whatever, I don't know. That's something that makes me prefer the PS4 OS over this one.

(Edit: and I know there's the same kind of stuff in the activity feed on PS4, and I'm not okay with it either. It's just less invasive in my opinion. I still wish it wasn't there though)

It's hardly invasive on the X1. It's three tiles on the far right of the screen. If you want your own content hit the left bumper and you have all your pins which you can reorganise at will.

I don't understand how people find the OS confusing.

The less time spent in the OS, the better. It just needs to be fast, so I can get to my game quickly. Which is why I'm pretty pissed the PS4 still hasn't suspend/resume working, which was promised by Sony in the initial reveal.

I think someone mentioned earlier that these types of threads should only be greenlit by mods once users console history has been somewhat verified. These bait threads are a flippin' minefield. In fact, it's pretty damn easy to pick out the fibbers from those who are truthful in this thread, but accusing them of being liars without proper facts or evidence should be frowned upon.

Also, for those of you complaining that the Xbox One OS is slow, I think it'd be fun for community members to post some cell phone vids showing either how that's not true or actually true. For me personally, the thing is blazing fast--albeit with Kinect voice commands--so w/o Kinect I wouldn't know.

It is pretty silly to say either OS is slow. But yes, it is slower to navigate without voice. I'd also argue if you know exactly what you are looking for on the PS4, the advantages of the Kinect become less apparent.

You may argue that that is a best case scenario, but that is ultimately the point of the PS4 OS. Things are in places where they make most sense to be. There are times when you are using Kinect not because it is inherently faster..but because you have no idea where that setting actually is.

I own both. I always say that I'm not only a gaming junkie, but an entertainment junkie as well. Because of this my XB1 is turned on a whole lot more often. I enjoy the OS and with kinect it makes it better when zipping around it.

The story that I always tell is this one. I get home from work and walk into my room. I turn on the Xbox, navigate to netflix, select the profile I want, and choose the show I am currently watching with kinect voice commands. All done while I'm changing out of work clothes into my pajama pants and a tshirt without repeating myself.

Many people say they could just use a mic for voice commands. That's true, but it would not work in this situation without being a pain in the ass. That is what the beauty of kinect and its enabled apps are.

God i wish Sony would get out of first gear with updating the UI.

Improve the library, let me organise my content bar with folders and the ability to rank alphabetically....oh and for the love of god introduce some form of download management.

Xbox One has a much better UI and and OS. But I don't play any games on it.
I think this thing will wind up being my Media Device the same way the PS3 was my media device last gen.

I buy and play all games on my PS4.

No, the controller and games are reasons I prefer my xbox one over my ps4. I only use consoles for their exclusive games and Xbox one games' quality since launch are much better than PS4 in my experience. Last of Us remastered is the only game that I enjoy in PS4 lineup.

Because Microsoft had to add features, the PS4 already has since launch.

yeah like suspend and resume, or friends notifications, or mp3 support...

Let's be honest here, both launched in an embarassing state. They were missing core features(like a car without windows or a radio it can drive, but wtf?). Even though I have my pc connected to my tv so I don't need media player capabilities from those systems, it's laughable at best that a 400/500$ console can't play back video files in 2014.

Still xbox one is getting their shit together, sony isn't. That's why xb1 dash > ps4 dash imo. The usability has improved by a lot since launch on xb1, the double tap the guide button to open the clean snap menu makes voice commands finally unnecessary (I HATE VOICE COMMANDS). And even if the first time you start, the game needs longer to install, i'll get those 4 minute difference back over the next couple of plays, since suspend and resume means no game loading times. It's just there when you turn on the console, and I can just turn off the console in the middle of what I'm doing since I don't have to worry about losing any progress. I don't use a whole lot of the features of my consoles except for the features directly related to gaming, friends list, Achievement/trophy overview, party chat and suspend/resume and lets look closer here:

friends list: Friends notifications and snappable friends list, so this goes to xb1
Acheivement/trophy overview: snappable, you can see how you are progressing while playing so again xb1
party chat: Vastly better sound quality on xb1 so again xb1
suspend/resume: xb1 wins by default. This feature is so good, that it alone would justify 900p over 1080p for me...

Don't care for media playback/TV/music (even though spotify for custom game music would be nice)/apps just what can enhance my gaming experience and dashboard wise, xb1 wins hands down here...

(worst by far is my wiiu though, why is it loading so long to go into settings ffs?)

I don't mind either, as long as it's simple enough to buy a game and launch it I really don't mind about the other "features" I like my consoles to play games. sure the apps are nice as my girlfriend can then watch BBC iPlayer ect but essentially these are first and foremost games machines, and this shouldn't be forgotten.

Also the new September OS is really nice, and I like the activity feed, the only thing that it needs to add is a one click to add someone when they have added you.

The twitter way of doing it is really annoying. it then means I have to block people who are stalking me....

I maybe convinced people who say the XO UI is confusing/need to use Kinect have a prejudice.

Yes, somethings can be easier like inputting a code and going to settings on XO.

You can literally pin almost ANYTHING even settings. Pin Settings, pin ESPN, and all you do is click one button, left, and everything you want is there. Not to mention the addition of the Friends tab should be a much improvement. Start the console, go right, and bang your friends are right there.

The UI is a lot better than PS4 and yes, that makes a difference in your console experience.

The pins are what nearly makes this OS alone. You can pin a tv show from any service you are watching it on. Watching Breaking Bad on Netflix? You can pin it and when you go to the show from your pins, it goes directly to that show on the netflix app exactly where you left off of. It skips several menus entirely by doing it this way.

Biggest reason for my preference of XBO comes down to pins. I don't like how the PS4 interface is a unorganized launcher with apps I didn't put there and can't remove like music and movies service from Sony. I will never subscribe to unlimited or use PS eye why do I have these apps on the launcher?

If they treated this launcher as pins like on XBO then I would agree it is better. Until that happens it's painful to grey to games and apps you want.

I am assuming everyone has five games. My list is so long the system can't load it all until I wax it on and off first.

I prefer the Xbox One OS. If a simplistic bare bones OS is your cup of tea, the PS4 is for you. Operating Systems are Microsoft's bread and butter. Not even a contest.

I heard that so much before buying an X1. In truth, I've found that it really just had better variety. The actual quality is overstated, and the number of exclusives has only decreased.

PS4 is the powerful sports car that's a blast to drive.

XB1 is the fully loaded luxurious SUV that gives you options and comfort.

I actually kind of like that analogy. The Xbox One (due largely to HDMI passthrough and Kinnect voice commands) has become my day to day console/media box (love telling the thing to turn on/off and my entire media setup turns on/off). But then I still have the PS4 to take out and play a particular game on and then shut it back down when done with the game.

So getting back to the car analogy. Sometimes you take the suv for a drive down the winding road even though the sports car would be more fun because you happen to be coming home from work and it's just more convenient.

If only the ui and online infrastructure from Ms were morphed with the hardware of the ps4. It would be the perfect system.

I never use kinect because it never works 100% of the time for me but it could be my accent. Also without kinect I find OS stutters and stops and isn't that fluid.
I purchase all of my third party games on PS4 because I think Sony should be rewarded for their decisions they made towards their HW.
Sorry MS but your machine just doesn't cut it for me.

I actually switched from PS4 to XB1 for that very reason. And as far as the snappy comments, I think I have a broken PS4 because my UI can chug and gets in a loading loop whenever I press down on games sometimes. I also find the store slow and unstable (not as bad as the PS3) and icons load slowly whenever I'm scrolling across the long ass horizontal line which feels like something out of a beginning tablet for kids. Sony has severely disappointed me. It just feels so thrown together at last minute and a step back from the XMB.

On the other hand, I find the XB1's UI and smartglass just slick as hell now, especially from an aesthetic and functional perspective. Even the little integrated things, like Twitch integration into the store, I just find enjoyable. It has improved dramatically and continues to improve. I love the stuff they're doing with the friend section coming up. I will say that the PS3/4 has a more functional Netflix and Vudu app at the moment though.

It just feels like the more versatile box. I went with PS3 last gen for similar reasons (bluray etc). People always say, "well I have n devices that can do that already!" but I don't want to use n many devices if I can get away with just using one. It's so much more convenient.

Did this get updated? I thought people were complaining that Kinect didn't work for navigation anymore once you're in apps like Netflix and that you have to use a controller.

No voice works in every app but it's not always the most effective way to go... Especially if your doing something like browsing Netflix

PS4 hands down. I get where I want quickly as possible. While on America, it loads forever. Achievements, Friends and even messages takes time. I hate it the way is setup. While I do wish the PS4 had notifications and suspend and resume. But is no big deal at the moment because everything I use works fast and is easy to get to. Like Party Chat, Invites and messages. All and all. They both still have longs ways to go.

How did you deduct that he played PS4 for 20 minutes only? Looking at his profile, he at least played Tomb Raider and Infamous, I would say he had more than enough time to get familiar with console and it's OS. I can say you didn't play Xbox One for more than 20 minutes as well.

You just went on and called his post "shit" for his opinion, yet you contributed no value to the thread, other than whine about someone else opinion. That is drive-by shitposting at its pinnacle.

Weeeezy themself said that they had only played the PS4 for 20 minutes. No deduction necessary.

And I didn't call Phatsaqs post shit for his opinion. I value 'opinions' - that's why I spend so much time on this board, but I do detest when a topic like OS, turns into controller debate, turns into list wars, turns into my executive is better than yours. I called out the practice of derailing a thread topic with an unrelated statement, laced with agenda, shit. So I whined, sure. Thankfully, you repaid my "drive-by shitpost" (your definition) with exactly what you are so annoyed by(whine), and elevated this thread. Great work.

Well, not every app (damn you youtube for not allowing voice navigation!!!). But for the most part it works in apps and for something simple like continuing a show you have already been watching on netflix it works pretty well. I would have to agree with TheQuake that the best part of kinect is using it to navigate the system while doing other mundane tasks. It is something that is so simple but when I start to use other devices it annoys me that I can't walk away to do something like get a glass of water while still controlling it.

I don't understand how people find the OS confusing.

I actually find the PS4 OS less intuitive than the Xbone's. But I think people get confused because the Xbone OS is structured like a PC OS and ends up feeling foreign when you are used to playing on the Xbox360/PS3/Wii IMO.

I actually felt much more comfortable with the Xbone OS when I started using it with the Surface Pro app - again, likely because I was used to the logic in a PC environment/had been running Windows 8 on the device.

You can pin shows from Netflix?

Did not know this and I've had the thing basically since launch lol. Will have to utilize that.

Yeah the Xbox OS is a bit slow but it does actually make me turn it on most of the time due to the nice layout.

Tend to use Netflix etc more on the Xbox than my PS4

One thing i will say though is the UI would probably frustrate me if i didnt have a Kinect...

Initially I said yes, but i think its due to games that was not available to the PS4 and that is why I prefer the XB1. I just have done more actual gaming on it. I do love the flexibility of the OS in the XB1.

What? That's not the case at all. If anything, the X1 launched with more features, and has been adding to the list since then.

eh at launch both consoles were missing some pretty huge stuff. I don't think anyone can argue that either console had the edge feature-wise at launch

there wasn't even a battery indicator on the xbox one at launch FFS

Both OS are pretty meh in my book.
PS4 needs more customization options while X1 needs something easier that isn't reliant on voice command.

Since its a OS feature being able to suspend games and jump right back in is the feature having me prefer X1 over PS4.

Yeah just use bing search for whatever show or movie. Then when the show comes up in the search just press start (menu) button and pin to home. It will then ask you what provider you want to pin to home from. Sometimes providers such as Netflix won't come up if it doesn't have it available for streaming. Just so you know.

This also works for music too if you are subscribed to Xbox Music.

I don't know if it's the beta, my xbone, or both, but most of the time I am found struggling with the xbox one interface because sometimes it just straight up locks up, or lags. It doesn't feel as seamless as the xbox 360 (or even ps4) gui.

It baffles me how people can say the PS4 OS is better than the Xbones. If there is one thing the where the PS4 doesnt stand a chance against, its the OS. It looks and feels like its coming straight out of 2007. For me, the OS is more important than having 100p more in resolution which is why I get all my multiplats on the bone. I just love switching around TV and games, skyping with people in the background or just changing channels via voice commands.
Going to have a hard time again getting used to not being able to switch to TV via voice commands when first light comes out on tuesday. Happens to me every time when I'm using my PS4. I also end up yelling "Xbox Mute" multiple times when I get a phone call and I'm playing something on the PS4...only to realize its the wrong console

The preview beta dash has a known issue of locking up. Update 1408 that was pushed to everybody not too long ago should be pretty stable.

I have no problems with the PS4 OS, but the Xbox One's OS is still a mess. If it wasn't for the voice commands lending a hand, I would hate doing anything outside of a game on the Xbox One.

I prefer the simplicity and feel of the PS4. It's not perfect and it needs to add organizational/functionality features like folders, prioritizing downloads and suspend/resume (my big 3) but its just very quick and easy to install and then get into and out of games which is personally why I bought these consoles. It's why the PS4 is where I spend the vast majority of my time playing games.

To Microsoft's benefit, they have made some impressive strides with the Xbox One's UI since launch but being someone that is not generally a fan of voice commands, navigating the UI with a controller doesn't feel anywhere near as intuitive for me. Thankfully voice commands when I have to use them are pretty responsive. Other things like snap, etc. server no purpose for me. I don't do much multiplayer gaming and I can't fathom why anyone would be playing a game and watching TV at the same time. No judging those that do, but I'm a one task type of guy. I'm either doing one or the other and I like to give that particular task my undivided attention. To each their own in that regard though.

So wait, I read earlier in the thread that PS4 doesn't even notify you when your friends come online?

Damn, guess I'll def be buying an Xbox One first.

Love the XB1 UI. Love that it's always on. I find that I pick up the controller and play it more often. I buy all non-sports multiplats on PS4 though.

So wait, I read earlier in the thread that PS4 doesn't even notify you when your friends come online?

Damn, guess I'll def be buying an Xbox One first.

The funny thing about that is that yes the system does not notify you when friends get online, but it will notify when they join a party. That doesn't mean your party, it means anyone's party. Even a party that was created by someone that isn't on your friends list. Quite annoying and pair that with no option to appear offline, it kind of sucks in that regard.

I have a Kinectless Xbox One, so I don't get the snappy voice commands or hand movements to do whatever I feel like. It feels fine using the controller, the pins really being a primary way of getting to anything with the click of the shoulder button. Of the two, though, I prefer the PS4 OS currently, as everything is quick and snappy rather than opening app after app to look at anything. The wait time isn't a problem, but I get a little OCD having too many apps open at once and wanting to close them.

I feel the PS4 OS is a huge improvement over the PS3, and the xbox one OS is a step back from the xbox 360. I'd still give the xbox one a slight edge over the PS4, but that is probably just because I use it more (the TV passthru is nice, and I have more friends with the xbox one at the moment). I was shocked how much work it was to get the party system and voice to work recently on xbox one during the destiny beta, when it worked so well on the xbox 360. Still, it is nice to see both Sony and MS updating their systems. As for true next gen type feel, the resume functionality on xbox is definitely the killer feature for me so far.
