Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

So just what are the advantages of going New XL over New 3DS if you don't care a out the screen size difference?

The old XL was nice in several ways compared to the original IMO. I'm finding it harder to be compelled by the XL this time.

Non-XL seems to be a much clearer choice this round.

Better battery.

When you put it that way, even if you don't mind the decreased pixel density, the original XL had a better form factor, better buttons, and had a matte finish. I've been struggling with the thought if the larger screen will ever be worth the price of loss of pixel density but I honestly I won't mind having the New non-XL if it feels considerably better to hold than the original 3DS. Even though I have tiny baby hands, I couldn't play Kid Icarus Uprising for long periods of time without hurting my wrists. I think I need to have a good feel of both new systems before I make my decision.

It'll have a better battery.

I've never actually held a normal sized 3ds in my hands so I don't know if it's more comfortable or not, but seeing pics the screen just looks too small and it looks uncomfortable. That screen size increase and XL like form factor is nice, but I don't know if I'll prefer it to the new XL.

Don't know if I'll go for the XL or not this time around, probably yeah.

Damn you Nintendo, damn you. I owned four DS's and so far two 3DS's. I have the sneaking suspicion I'll own six of these when all is said and done.

Oh ur a cute one.

More pixel density is better for IQ.
Sure, but if you increase the size of a screen while keeping the resolution, the pixel density will inevitably go down. It's physics, there's fuck all anyone can do about it. And since increasing the resolution wasn't really an option in the first place, you're effectively complaining about getting a larger screen now.

The thing I like the most about this new 3DS is that it doesn't look like it'll be as uncomfortable to hold as the current OG 3DS. Looks like it has better curves. I'm hoping for an early 2015 release here in the west.

I am getting that same DSi ergonomics vibe, one of the reasons I am so hyped about this.

Also, like DSi, it's not glossy, yay!

Probably has been asked before, but what is the price if you convert the amount of yen into $ and €?

I don't know if I want one. The only upcoming game I really want for the 3DS is Monster Hunter 4.

But those faceplates doe. Especially the cute Kutku one :3

It's s little bit insulting for grown ups that purchase the console, but it's an interesting new take on checking someone's age.

Edit : woops wrong thread xD was about the internet lock.

You know, I just thought of something very important.

There is an ambient light sensor or something similar right? Does the Japanese FAQ say if it can be disabled? Personally, I prefer to control my own damn brightness.

I think the 2nd analog thing is overblown. Unlike the left analog, you won't constantly have your thumb on the 2nd.

Edit: No 3rd party developer is going to make an exclusive for this thing. Support is already diminished thanks to mobile and developers aren't going to abandon 40 million devices to sell a Nintendo revision.
How much it matters probably depends on the genre. FPS games need something more substantial unless I'm underestimating just how well this works, but many 3rd person games would probably do fine so long as they're not overtly aiming dependent.

And I do think we'll see third party exclusives, but barring the system REALLY taking off it'd probably be mainly smaller developers and maybe some of the Japanese 3rd parties going ahead and experimenting with a title. Probably also depends on how easy it is to just support both, I'm assuming MH4G is likely to be one of those New enhanced titles, and perhaps going the iOS route of "it works but it won't be a pretty sight" is more than enough for the vast majority of games.
emmm..

The labeling aggravates some of them too. They're absolutely going to troll them by accident just by serving Japanese (and European) nostalgia.

Only in black and blue. Poor white never going to make it here in the US.
Blue I wouldn't mind, and I am expecting to get black myself, but I wanna see white here too! Would look great with a mockup I made of some of my favorite fanart...

They should just release black and white for all regions, that way you can go faceplate crazy!

I'm having trouble trying to figure out the size of the New LL in relation to the XL. Are they about the same size? The New 3DS is apparently larger than the current regular 3DS, with the LL being larger than the New 3DS, but I didn't see a comparison between the LL and the XL.

Could someone fill me in?

But they didn't lower the resolution. The physical screen size is larger, which makes the pixels larger (unless they use a higher res screen), thus there are fewer pixels per inch. But there is the exact same amount of pixels on all 3DS systems. You're spot on about pixel density though.

Nice, Nintendo, nice. They seem to have rediscovered a little of their mojo since MK8 launched. Good to see the return of the matt too!

Day 1 for me.

I can? Oh yay!

Now I can save money on my buying too many 3DSes for the designs because I can just buy the plates. Yay!

I love 3DS designs so much. They're like, my favourite video game system designs ever. I don't know why Nintendo decided to be so stylish and fashionable. But they're amazing for doing it.

I wish someone would make desktop cases with designs like this.

That sounds like a nice present to me. Though for a 3 year old... are 3DSes um.. strong enough and safe enough for toddlers? It might have small parts. And toddlers are pretty rough with things...

And yeah, I wish they had the Super Famicom/Nintendo design on the LL/XL. The Super Famicom is my favourite video game system of all time it's super amazing and exciting to me that they're using the Super Famicom button style. I already like so many things about the new 3DS and want one. But I prefer the LL/XL...

The plates are pretty generic but quite cute and looks like only for the regular New 3DS, I imagine they will keep making limited edition XL/LLs and have cooler designs.

Yeah I have no idea, its my first child so I will see how we go. Of course its all just one big excuse for me to buy the system because I already have an XL. Right now, she is 11 months and she can unlock my iphone by pressing the home button and swiping the screen, so I figured by 2 or 3 I'm sure she'll be playing some games. I'll definitely supervise her tho so she doesn't break anything or use the 3D on the system. No chance I will hand her the system and let her do her own thing. I'm more worried about her eyesight because its a handheld, so only limited playing time. But I'd much rather her play Super Mario Bros. or Legend of Zelda than playing Candy Crush. Its a great way to play those earlier NES games on the new handheld than playing on a TV.

I used to be in this camp until I saw my friend's 3ds XL. The size is something else, it really makes my OG 3ds look like a cramped mess.
Same here. Was always fan of the compact size but before buying I saw a regular and an XL side by side and changed my mind immediately. But this time I will probably go for the normal. XL has also bigger weight as I learned the hard way from long sessions.
The 20% screen size increase and the switchable covers are greatly appreciated.

PS: I think a screen size right in the middle would be the sweet spot for me.

The new models cost the same as the old ones, so it should be the same pattern in all regions. So instead of converting, look at your local recommended retail-price.

Wait so the thing that differentiates the platform is the word "New"?

Only Nintendo can somehow make their own fucking handheld platform more convoluted than the debacle that was the Wii to WiiU

What are you even talking about, lol. I wasn't around here when the DSi got revealed, I wonder if the reaction was the same.

The dsi was also pretty stupid. I never got to play some of those eshop games... I don't think it sold super well either.

What are you talking about? Its predecessor (the 3DS, release in 2011) has it smack-dab in the middle as well.

For the XL, it was on the left corner side, and whenever I had headphones plugged in (almost all the time) it would always stab into my palm. Glad that isn't an issue anymore.

To be fair, it's more than likely that the new models will replace the old ones at retail, not sell in tandem

Wow Nintendos inventory management is terrible, this should really be out in the EU for this Xmas, their probably kicking themselves after stuffing all the channels with 2DS inventory and Nintendo probably overestimating 3DS demand. I think the new model is a shot in the arm that needs to come out now not later. A lot of kids will get the older OG 3DS, XL and 2DS this Xmas, then any 'new' 3DS enhanced titles will be out next year. This could have improved the market penetration of enhanced titles for next year by selling a boat load this holiday season. Oh Nintendo...

Maybe in Japan, that is what happened with DSi if I correctly recall, but in the US? They most likely will confuse the fuck out of everyone, they just didn't want to let the DS Lite die here.

Mr. Moffitt, if you are reading this, please kill the 3DS/3DS XL at retail by replacing it with these systems at the same price.

lol so true i remember they still were releasing new ds lite colors here way after dsi xl.

One of the biggest selling points for me is the matte finish and the ergonomics
Great thing is though, that (at least on the regular one), you can have any feel you want through faceplates. I am sure there will be places that offer, matte, glossy, and satin ones, as well as rubberized ones. I truly believe it's only a matter of time, and the whole prospect excites me greatly!

That is some really gorgeous artwork :o good job!

Btw did you by any chance use the 3DS Faceplate template I made? I'm so sad my topic got locked :( put so much work into it. Ah well

Wait, so the LL on the right is really the XL? Is that what you're saying?
The XL is called LL in Japan.

Can anyone tell me what is the black spot besides the front camera? I think that is used for the brightness sensor, but there's more in Japanese in the image I can't translate.
