Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

So now that it has all the same buttons and sticks as the WiiU gamepad, does anyone think this new 3DS will be able to be used as a gamepad with the U?

It seems like it might be able to with the extra CPU and all.

The only uncompatible thing now is the screen. It has a lower resolution (that could be acceptable) but the wide one is not tactile, and the tactile one is not wide.

It's a shame because it would have made perfect business sense to release a gamepad-compatible 3DS, and then a Gamepad-less and cheaper Wii U (ala Xbone with no Kinect). Even some Wii U + new 3DS bundles.

Why in earth doesn't the Xl have replaceable covers or SNES buttons? Is it targeted solely at old people in Japan? I'd much prefer the larger screen of the XL,and the price difference is so tiny that it seems better value for money.

I also found the 3D effect more pronounced on the XL due to the size of the screen (although I tended to turn it off because of the narrow sweetspot)

Wait so the thing that differentiates the platform is the word "New"?

Only Nintendo can somehow make their own fucking handheld platform more convoluted than the debacle that was the Wii to WiiU

It'll replace the previous ones, so once stock has sold through, stores will only have the new ones - they'll just be 3DS and 3DS XL like before.

I'm torn between the two. I love the size of the XL and the ergonomics fit my hand much better, but at the same time the face plates on the Normal one are really tempting. Might just go with the XL to save me money cause I know if I have access to face plates im gonna be buying a lot of them -.-

Man, just as I was finally able to make up my mind on saving up for a Wii U (rather than a 3DS XL) they announce this thing. I'm back to being conflicted again.

Some of the designs I wouldn't mind if the top and bottom were the same. Just have to remember the top is the more important of the two. At worst, you can just choose to swap out only the top cover and leave the bottom completely neutral.

I was hoping for something like this:

But I guess it's complicated to design around technical constraints and the need to keep it small and portable.

While I would like Nintendo to finally take a two sticks design the one above would make people throw away the basic New3DS in about 2 minutes after playing a dpad game, holding it so low would be just awful.

But yeah, the point remains, we need a more modern interface with 2 analogs not a weird c-stick nub. That said its kind of a notable upgrade towards achieving a better experience in MH4G like someone mentioned.

This is my second favourite new 3DS case design. I don't know if there are bigger pictures of it. I think there was another one I got the pink one from, but I forgot.. I love the light purple and the pretty stars. Definitely my second favourite design!

If only it and the Super Famicom buttons came on the XL design.
I want to petition them so we get this on XL version. And region free, too.
That would make this pretty much perfect 3DS!

The analog sticks don't have to be as big as that, and definitely not as small as what they are planning to do.

Right now in that photo, the face buttons are too low, so make the second analog a little smaller and move the buttons up more.

They likely still see the XL as the older generation's choice thus the colours of the buttons are more subdued and it doesn't have the wacky faceplates to make it the more sophisticated choice.

This would make using the face buttons extremely uncomfortable. Nintendo made the right call here.

The more I think about this, I'm almost positive this will be called one of the following outside Japan:

3DS Advance

or

Advance 3DS

Sheeit, you know what? This could be possible, actually. You remember those „Advance-...“ stuff that was registered a few weeks ago?^^

Please be region-free.

Or at the very least allow me to fucking system transfer my US OG 3DS to a new PAL new! 3DS.

God damn, I didn't think of that.... I was thinking of getting a PAL New 3DS to compliment my US 3DS XL.... I'm guessing it won't be possible.

I like the colored buttons. Nintendo started the trend and they're the only ones who don't use them anymore. I think being able to tell buttons apart by color is cool. It definitely helps in QTE :P Nintendo should use colored button prompts in their games now and keep using it in all future systems. I think they might, since the new XL's buttons also have the colors on the letters. They could have made a sleeker version with white letters if they wanted to.

The C stick looks like an afterthought, so I don't think we're going to see a bunch of FPS on 3DS now or anything. I think games will just use it for the camera and it will work fine for that.

I'm very interested to know more about what the system can do technically. Is this thing just powerful enough to play any Wii port at this lower resolution? The fact that they are showing Xenoblade and giving the 3DS just as many buttons as a Wii CC Pro makes me wonder. Was the purpose of this system to make a portable Wii port machine? Are all the exclusive new games going to be Wii ports? Can this thing play my old Wii VC games?

Virtual Console is a huge no. Virtual Console = Emulation and theres no possible way this would be able to do that. They haven't even gotten a SNES or GBA emulator on the OG 3DS's yet.

It can do a Xenoblade port, but a VC game port is out of the question? Why is that? I think even the regular 3DS is capable of doing SNES and GBA VC. Nintendo has just been slacking in the VC department, as always.

It would also cause people to think that it's a new platform, not a new iteration.

Mind you, people think that anyway

Emulation is very intensive on the hardware. If the 3DS was capable of emulating SNES and GBA, it would have by now.

Seriously, even PCs struggle to perfectly emulate SNES.

I have an OG 3DS and using the dpad is already super uncomfortable. I don't think that design would be any worse.

Just like if the Wii U was capable of emulating the N64 it would have by now, right. Oh, right, there's no N64 on Wii U, because Nintendo.

It's different kinds of emulation. No console is doing "cycle accurate" emulation.

Big price difference between the XL and this in Japan guys? I've held off on a 3DS for a while but had it in my head to get one, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to get this when it's announced for Europe.

I love the coloured face buttons but can't understand why Nintendo would split the user base without making a substantial jump in power.
Why do they have to half arse so many things? :-(

I really like the look of the new design. I used to have a laptop with the mouse controlled by one of those rubber sticks years ago and that worked really well.

I am interested in the price though as I only really play Monster Hunter that would benefit from the new stick.

Where? i can't find them on the site.

Edit: ok I found them. It's tempting.

Sorry to both the people who couldn't find them, I couldn't find them when I first woke up either. I found the news article though. Play-asia is so weird with their search function haha.

They look cool but goddamnit I only just bought myself an xl to replace my og 3ds a couple of weeks ago. Poor timing on my part :/

No biggie. Buy Smash Bros and play it on the superior 3DS this year.
Sell the XL next year after you bought the new 3DS (not the XL because no colours and no fasceplates, obviously) and transferred all your data.
Done.

Looks like they messed up the colours... there's no white LL, only Blue and Black (they actually have a pic of the White N3DS instead for the Black LL).

But anyway, damn it... those prices are so tempting... But with region-locking, it's pretty useless to me, especially as I've gone 100% with games. Now if I actually were fluent in Japanese...

Yes this is what keeps me up at night no white new 3DS XL why?

I was admiring it too. That vertical stand is super appealing. I wonder if they'll come with them, a la OG 3DS, or be sold separately, like the XL.
They'll be sold seperately. Probably because they come in different colors. The stands are 1200 yen for LL (only black it seems), and 1000 yen for 3DS (white, mint and pink available).

I really love them too. They're so stylish.
