Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Personally I'm going to wait until Nintendo announce what other games will be exclusive to the new one. When there's a few titles I really want then I might upgrade. Definitely not trading in my Zelda 3DS XL though.

Why would you need 6 shoulder buttons and 3 sticks?

Because I'm hardcore as fuck? No, really, it's not about the extra buttons or the 3rd stick (although I think some games could actually work like that), it's just that a 3DS (whatever version, with or without extra c-nub) will never be as comfortable as a 3DS + extra Grip (preferably one with an extra circle pad).

For example this:

OR the regular MH4 Circle Pad Pro XL

OR maybe even this crazy motherfucker of a Grip.

Anyway, the first two should be the ultimate combo if you like to play for longer times (not sure about the 3rd one, though, looks kinda big).
The New 3DS' extra c-nub will probably be pretty good, but it will not surpass these combos, that's why I plan on getting a new Grip for the New 3DS as well.

I wonder how the ergonomics are on these devices.

Doesn't seem like Nintendo has improved them.

I think I'll hold onto my 2DS for now until otherwise.

Dammit, so it has been confirmed that the one coming out in Japan in October will be region locked? I was gonna be in Japan during November and I thought I could pick one up, but I guess I'll have to wait now.

There´s nothing they can really do to make them more ergonomic without making them more bulky. A handheld will never be as comfortable as a proper controller, that´s just the way it is. The Vita is the most comfortable so far and even that thing gets a bit stressful on the hands after a while.

Holy shit, that grip is brilliant! Great design.

That´s one thing I realized during my time with MHP3rd and "the claw" - being able to control your movement, the camera AND the face buttons at the same time is really a huge advantage in Monster Hunter. The CCP on the XL never felt right to me because when you move the camera, you can´t attack or dodge and vice versa (unless you move the camera controls to the extra shoulder buttons, in which case the extra analog pad becomes useless and just makes reaching the face buttons more uncomfortable).

I really like the 2DS's ergonomics, so I think Nintendo could have done something.

All of these mockups of an "improved" c-stick show the weirdness behind the its size and placement: it obviously can't be too large or otherwise it'd be too cumbersome. The current size is perfect if you're just doing camera controls, but not suited for something like Smash Bros where you need quick flicks.

I wonder how the Internet would react if Nintendo unveils Super Mario Galaxy is on its way to the new 3DS.
A collective shrug as the game is still playable and looks a hojillion times better on a Wii U?

Oh you mean how it would actually react, not how it should react? Yeah, with irrational outrage. Sometimes, I wish all the emotion could be put to productive ends, such as protesting against wars and such.

I don't know why I'm so excited about this, but I am.

I actually had money set aside to get an iPad Mini this fall, but I might skip that again and put that towards New 3DS XL.

That seriously looks boss, totally want this for when I get a 3DS.

The current setup is not bad, but one weapon that this grip design will really benefit is bow.

Have you tested it ? The one on the 3ds is a lot taller meaning you re likely to push the sides too no?

Tall or not, if your thumb gets sweaty - even a little bit - there is the chance of slipping of, something that happend to me a lot with the circle pad (so that I had to find my custom solution to that).

It is just a simple thing the Nintendo designers keep on not considering.

Then I would buy that shit SO HARD and not even be mad.

Seriously, I never had a Wii, only Gamecube, and that was ages ago and I developed a pretty solid nostalgia for it. I love my Vita as a port/indie-machine, so I would love the N3DS as a Wii- (and maybe even GC?) port machine as well without any hesitation whatsoever.

If this porting stuff is as easy as some people assume (I have no idea how that all works), I would welcome this as an easy way to extend the lifespan of the system.

3DS got some N64-ports/remakes, if N3DS gets a couple of GC/Wii-remakes I could justify buying that thing and selling my old one.

I think I might upgrade to this. I've been meaning to get an XL for a while, but if this is a vast improvement then I think I'd rather get this. I hope it comes out in time for Smash in America, or perhaps there's a bundle planned to include Smash with it, perhaps, because I'd love to have this alongside it.

Plus, I've always wanted to play Xenoblade, so this is the perfect opportunity to do so.

I hope it comes out in time for Smash in America,

I won´t be released outside Japan until 2015, I assume something like February at the earliest.

Which is the part that sucks: We won´t actually be able to buy one for another (at least) 4 to 5 months. It´s weird timing for people who don´t own a 3DS and wanted to get one for Smash.

I guess this is also the reason this really important Direct was JP only. We get the Nintendo consoles first, Japan gets the Nintendo handhelds first.

That's a pretty good price at Play Asia for a new system import......if only it were region free, I can't even entertain the notion of buying it because of that.

For real though, why did Nintendo gimp the new XL so much?

"So we made the smaller new 3DS really cool with faceplates and coloured buttons and stuff and then there's this bigger thing with a metallic finish because we don't like you."

Was excited to hear about the new models yesterday and have already resolved to import the new Monster Hunter 4G LL bundle this October from Japan so I can give the new system a good test run before it comes West. I have a feeling it will likely release next year at the same time as MH4U in the West and they will amp up marketing by. Showing how the additional features will go with MH4U and Super Smash 3DS well along with Amiibo

I'm sure they'll release a New XL with fully colored ABXY buttons at a later time. They will do this because they can. They know there are people who are crazy enough to replace their New XL for a new New XL just because of the buttons.

The smaller 3DS is cheaper and more portable so I'd imagine it's aimed at a younger audience, one which actually cares about little covers and such and would spend extra money on aesthetic add-ons where the XL is more expensive and aimed at a more mature audience just like the DS XL with its more boring and sophisticated colours as opposed to the more youthful colours of the DSi.

It's kind of funny how the DSi was made for a younger audience where the XL was seen as weird, unwieldy and for older people with worsened eyesight but Nintendo spun the 3DS XL into being more hip and cool and ran on the script that it had a bigger battery and larger screen and now they've turned it around again and spun the smaller device into a positive.

I'm just glad they actually made two sku's and made them both good without going too far one way or the other.

Uhh.. just noticed the placement of the microSD. You can't get to it without removing the backplate, right?

No, but how often do you plan on removing it? I think this is why they have the wireless backup/media transfer now, you should only need to do it to upgrade the initial card, which given the prevalence of 32GB cards I'd guess for most people would be exactly once.

I've come at peace with my internal dilemma: I'll hold off on a New 3DS LL for now, purchase MH4G and play it on my current 3DS, then when Xenoblade arrives, I'll probably get the limited edition they'll make, or purchase both the game and the Metallic Black console seperately at the same time if I don't like the color scheme.

edit:

oh, quick question: does someone know if you can take your sdcard with your saves and plug it into another 3DS then still continue that save on that other machine, without the need of anything else?

To be fair Nintendo recommend you turn off the device before you take out the SD card etc so it's not like you're going to be hot swapping the thing in any case.

I assume there will be many special edition New 3DS XLs for those with poor self control.

I don't see what's different about what they're doing with this versus what they did with the DS/DSi in the previous generation. I doubt 99% of games will utilize the new hardware anyway. Redesign looks slick.

Anybody have guesses why this is a Japan only release now?

Probably due to how many they have ready to ship, with the expectation that this is going to fly of shelves in Japan I'd imagine? Maybe that or the fact Japan never got the 2DS so they're due a new SKU for the holiday season. I guess it depends on how many current 3DS' are in the channels and what Nintendo want to do with them (discontinue, drop price etc). Wouldn't be surprised if the OG 3DS is gone and replaced with 2DS.

But you can transfer data without opening the backplate. Might be windows 7 and 8 only and not individual files though.
Ok, I'll see how it goes.

I'll admit, it would be rare since media playback is not the greatest, and accessing my PC content on an individual file basis (as opposed to in batch) I have other solutions. It's just a mild annoyance.

to test the japan market with a new revision of hardware, fcc filings for NA release are still probably processing, they can only produce and ship so much ?

I would've thought Nintendo would've tried to get the new 3DS' out in NA before the holiday season. A marketing campaign for the "new" 3DS would've moved a lot of them here IMO.
