Ray Rice (football player) cut by Baltimore Ravens, suspended indefinitely by NFL

Actually they kinda had to. They had to make a judgement on him before the season. It's the issue that they're facing with McDonald. Do you suspend a player indefinitely everytime they're accused of a crime? The player union would fight that to the death.
Nah, the NFL could have said that he was suspended until they completed their investigation, which would have been warranted. Instead they acted as if they saw all of the evidence and then decided it wasn't all that bad after all so two games.

At no point did they correct any reports that Goodell had seen the elevator tape because that was exactly the message they wanted out in the public at that time to make people think that maybe something happened in the elevator that made the situation look better than the other tape out in the media. Now they're trying to backpedal and act like none of that ever happened.

And you're a misogynistic fool. Go away.

Just because I'm not going along with the outrage of the week machine does not mean I'm a misogynist or need to be insulted.

If you can't see how this is BS, you have no sense of fairness and are just eager to see a guy's career ruined.

Again, the NFL needs to start banning DUI guys on their first offense as well. If not, they are full of it and just reacting to the mob.

Not like this, fam.

Not like this.

What exactly is the NFL going to do about their recent domestic violence rules? If Ray McDonald is found guilty, don't they now have to ignore their six game policy and instead give him an indefinite suspension?

I know it was probably a joke, but the CFL does not allow players serving an active suspension from the NFL to play.

Regarding DUI: Didn't the NFL just suspend an owner for like 6 games on a first offense issue?

What I wonder is as a society do we believe in rehabilitation and second chances? Can Ray Rice redeem himself or should his career be over for good?

These are the kind of questions we have to ask ourselves and have answers. The punishment is the easy part but what happens afterward? Should anything happen afterwards?

It's really distressing to see people wanting this guy's career destroyed over this.....especially when based on all accounts, he's not a bad guy. Some folks just have bad tempers and I hope everyone wanting to bury this guy over his worst moment never do anything wrong in public

She lunged at him. He was just protecting himself. If his fiance was a young black man and Ray Rice was a cop, then Ray Rice would have been within his rights to shoot and kill her. She got off lucky with just a punch.

"Butwhataboutism"

Goddamn, what a way to go, Konex :(

Bettors will always miss you being wrong about literally everything.

DUIs not being penalized enough is not really a good reason to not increase the penalties on domestic abuse. "Yes, this makes sense, but unless we fix everything at once, we should do nothing because that would be slightly hypocritical." is always horrible logic, lol.

The Ravens and the NFL lied about how bad this was and now can no longer lie about what happened. They have to change the punishment because the original punishment was based on lies about her "provoking Ray" or some shit and therefore was an incorrect punishment.

Why did you draft a 3 YPC back with a suspension anyway.

I don't think that they'll have any choice. They've lost all credibility on this issue now.

It sucks for the guys to not get complete due process but in Rice's case there's no question of his guilt yet the league tried to organize a cover-up. If not for this then they'd have the trust of the public to investigate these cases fairly.

I hate the idea of someone's life being ruined over a single mistake but he compounded it by participating in this PR stunt. Instead of taking full responsibility for what he did and throwing himself on the sword he let his wife humiliate herself by publically taking part of the blame. I can't support that.

No exactly like this. Let him build his own casket.

Sorry I'm not going to pile on a guy who did something terrible after he's been publicly shamed and lost his job. Not sure how that makes me a misogynist or ban-worthy (seems to be what you're implying)

I can confidently say I'll never punch the shit and knock out someone. In public or private.

I get through life just fine without resorting to violence.

I can say the same. That doesn't mean I feel anyone who does so deserves to lose their career with no chance at redemption. It's even more infuriating to me with the reactionary, ad-hoc way this went down.

I'm sure he can get off with the "aggressive step" or "dehumanizing stare" argument.

I watched his press conference. He made zero excuses and didn't sugar-coat anything. Don't let the NFL and Ravens con you into blaming Rice for the aftermath

He deserves at minimum a year suspension.

The revised NFL rules are kind of stupid I think. Better obviously, but still stupid. First offense should be 1 year with second being lifetime ban. And depending on severity of the case, an election to go straight to lifetime ban should be possible.

That's the major thing for Goodell. Let's look at what's happened

1.) Rice is suspended for two games after the NFL finishes its investigation
2.) A month later the NFL announces a new domestic violence policy that will result in a suspension of six game for a first offense and a lifetime ban for a second
3.) Goodell apologizes for the length of Rice's suspension
4.) A little over a week later Goodell suspends Rice indefinitely

He doesn't seem to know what to do with this. He's reacting instead of doing anything to actually lead.

If true then Goodell should probably start packing.

Goodall will not get fired regardless of what happens. Rice was expendable to tamp down a PR mess. The commissioner isn't

Based on what? Public outrage? Don't you see how ridiculous this is?
What? If this could be done all over again, he should have gotten a year right off the bat rather than a joke 2 game suspension.

If I beat someone unconscious at my university for example, I'm kicked out via an administrative judicial proceeding. Done. Not two days, two weeks, two months. Done.

In this situation, if the NFL knew about this second video at the time of the original sanction of two weeks, then they are profoundly stupid. And now revising the suspension with all information already previously known is also stupid. Rice if he wanted to could probably successfully sue that his due process rights are being violated. But I don't know the NFL administrative hearing procedures.

Busy news cycle. Although I'm surprised people are making a big deal out of it still since Janay already apologized for assaulting Ray's fists with her skull.

That's just the way life works. Your lowest moment can ruin you, especially if you're famous. A bad temper isn't an excuse for a lack of control.

Why isn't he? They're all about protecting the image of the league, right? That's why all the suspensions have been handed out. Why there have been so many rule changes. Well, how are you going to protect said image when you have a commissioner disrespecting 50% of your fanbase?

He didn't beat her unconscious. He punched her (terrible thing to do) and she hit her had on the recoil. I see a big distinction there and I feel a year with no way to earn a living in his profession is too harsh punishment for that. That doesn't make me a misogynist as another poster said though...

One punch can be deadly.

Savings are important. You think he couldn't have figured out a way to eat for a year with the contract he was getting?

Or he can get a different job? Like most people have to do.

It would be pretty crazy if Ray Rice brought down Goodell when the whole CTE issue couldn't touch him.

I heard edited clips from his "apology" speech on NPR and it sounded like he only apologized to his team, coaches, and fans, NOT his wife, and then made his wife apologize too. Then also made the absolute worst analogy possible given the scenario and said, paraphrased, "I'm not a loser, because when I get knocked down I get back up, and I'm gonna get back up from this one" (HOLY SHIT WTF). Is that accurate?

most of the players in the CTE issue were under previous commissioners.

MLS should put out a statement that their football doesn't have incidents like this.

Rice is past his prime and not worth the trouble to the Ravens. If this was a huge star who could still play, the team wouldn't terminate his contract and the NFL would not be able to do this retroactive suspension on top of the previous punishment.

Also I don't know how Goodell is "disrespecting" women based on how he punished Rice. The pleading from the victim herself is why the initial punishment was lenient. How is factoring her concerns into the punishment disrespecting women? Isn't that actually respecting her wishes?

The big mistake we make in society is treating every incident as representative of some cause or societal issue. Is domestic violence even a cause for termination for regular folks if you don't go to jail? I bet it's not!

Sometimes bad shit just happens and I don't think it's fair to make Rice the face of domestic violence based on what we know so far.

Reminds me of every time a mayor/congressman/sheriff humiliates their spouse by getting caught sexting/cheating/degrading women somehow that the wife is always, always, always standing right next to them and doesn't get to speak or react during the public apology.

Hey he went to college, right? Sure there is a finance class peppered in the general education program somewhere.

And the NFL instituted financial planning training for rookies, IIRC.

So many players go bankrupt, entourage and bad investments plus lack of self control is a horrible mix.

See ya. He hit her and knocked her out. Then drug her out of the elevator.

Too bad it doesn't void his contract. You can't hit a woman. Ever.

Fuck the hypocritical nfl though. Claiming they did not see the video. Keep it classy watching your bottom line assholes.

Not sure I would ever say good on tmz, but well played. No defense for this. None.
