Sites giving this 9+ shouldn't be taken seriously IMHO. It is very clearly a mediocre game in the eyes of most gamers.

Well played Activision... Well played.

I fucking love this game. I've been playing non-stop since the servers went live, and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. Not sure who these reviewers are and why they feel comfortable publishing so quickly, but I think delaying press access has pressured these outlets to publish premature reviews.

I don't think any reviews should be taken seriously. Like I said, I'm on vacation, started mere hours after the servers went live, and spent most of my time playing and I still feel like I don't have a thorough understanding.

I can only missions with friends? WHAT?

I'll wait for match making to be patched in before I buy this game

You'll see other people running around still. You can run up and join their team or have them join yours, but if you do you get kicked out to a loading screen and then thrown back in (at least the one time I did it that's what happened). That shit should be seamless. If I'm standing there next to someone and tell it I want to join his party, it should just happen. Just another of the many minor annoyances in this game.

Slapping an arbitrary number at the end of a review diminishes credibility. SHOCKING. Why "9+?" How about you just ignore them and follow your trusted review source instead of trying to blanket statement how "most gamers" feel when you haven't a clue?

1) Subjective and your own opinion

2) Show me the receipts. Unless you have actual proof, trying to say 'most' or 'minority' or whatever just comes off, and probably is, projecting. Reading the OP would suggest the game is probably a 9+ game. This thread reads like a 7 range. Reddit I haven't checked, but I'm sure things are heated there between conflicting opinions on the game.

Sarcasm? I can't tell.

It's sold a crap load of copies and the OT is full of people liking the game. It may not be mindblowing, but it's well above "mediocre" for a lot of people.

I don't even know why I bother responding.

Wait wait...no matchmaking? I was totally confused about that omission in the beta, but thought surely they'd have it in some form for the final release.

Say it ain't so?

Posted this in the OT but figured I'd post it here as well. In a rush and don't have time to read the reviews - just looking for anyone who's played the game to give me a few quick answers. Thanks!

Also gonna add - did they fix the missions and narrative structure in the single player campaign? I'm gonna be playing the game solo so I'm hoping it's more cohesive than it was in beta

Hey GAF - I've been on holidays and out if the gaming loop for a couple weeks. Finally get home Friday and thinking about grabbing Destiny on the weekend. Can someone give me a quick rundown on what they improved/added from the beta? I remember that was supposedly a tiny slice of the entire game so I'm curious what's been added in terms of content, modes, areas, etc.

How much larger is Old Russia in the final game? Is the world more interesting? NPCs to talk to, side quests, etc? Are the invisible walls/instant deaths gone? How many zones per planet?

Sorry if this has been answered I'm just on mobile and don't have long - wanna get this preload started in the next half hour depending on the answers I get. Thanks guys!

From what I can tell, Old Russia is almost exactly the same as it was in the Beta.

My disappointment with the early game....

They set up an interesting story. You go through a tutorial that is enjoyable and you learn the basics.

Then you are set down in this really cool city, but every NPC you interact with is a quest giver or merchant, and they have no dialogue to add to the universe nor compelling reason to continue.

The game plays great. Shooting is super fun. But I wish some effort had been put into the NPC's, and them providing more story or depth to the universe.

Why don't you just go ahead and say "Minority opinions are always wrong" ?

Because that's basically what you're saying.

No. Mission and narrative structure is the same.

Weapon balance mostly I guess. And opening up the rest of the game. The world is slightly more boring with less to do because public events are way more rare for some reason.

Beta actually ends up being about 25% of the campaign content. There are no surprise modes or content. There is the Moon, Venus, and Mars. The Reef, which we expected to be a second hub, actually exists just for a cutscene...

How much larger is Old Russia in the final game?
It's not. What we had in the beta is what is in release. Closed of areas remain closed off.

Is the world more interesting? NPCs to talk to, side quests, etc?
No.

Are the invisible walls/instant deaths gone?
No.

How many zones per planet?
One.

: Doesn't live up to ridiculous hype = Mediocre, fuck you bungie I'll never buy a game from you again.

/"gamers"

Said absolutely no one. Way to strawman.

Everything is more-or-less the same as the beta outside of a couple missions later in the game throwing some interesting curveballs. PvP has some more modes, Handcannon has a huge buff, AR was nerfed, and Pulse Rifle is quite the beast now with the stability buff.

But yeah, the beta represents the whole game to a T essentially.

It seems GAF is largely unified in saying this comment was less than mediocre, as far as content and rationality are concerned.

Well played, source of fallacious nonsense, well played.

Did Bungie fix the repetitive gameplay and thin narrative that I've seen people complain about? If not, I'm not sure how the 9/10s are justified. I want this game's world to suck me in like Halo's did, yet one of the most common critiques I'm seeing is that Destiny feels too gamey because your objectives aren't given meaningful weight or a place in a larger picture.

I give Destiny a huge thumbs down, if only for the HORRIBLE Paul McCartney song. Gaugh! It hurts to listen too. I can't believe they made such a big deal out of this originally, and I know why they've been sorta quiet about it since.

Ive been enjoying the hell out of the game, my onlt real comolaint is how disjointed the story is and the load times. I go to turn in an item to the speaker and then I have to go turn it in for a new item, nothing else. Hit lvl 19 tonight going to hit 20 tomorrow and crucible or heroic it up.

Nope. Those are the main complaints most people have with the game and are totally valid criticisms.

Personally, Halo's "game world" didn't mean much to me after Halo 1 (cheesy story, bad writing, lame villains, aliens talking english etc). The missions in Destiny aren't as satisfying though.

I can see people giving the game 9+ because of the polish, art direction, quality of the gunplay, addictive nature etc. It depends on what you value in an experience basically. I think all of this stuff is super solid, but personally the game is an 8 for me.

It had some big faults but for a new IP this is a great start IMO. Instead of focusing on just the bad, focus on the really fun stuff
Solid 7.5-8/10

Damn. That's quite disappointing to me :(

I understand some people will love this game but I'm not someone who cares about coop or pvp or loot or grinding the same areas/missions repeatedly. I just wanted a really good sci-fi story and it seemsthe game isn't really made for me. My biggest disappointment is that they left the world empty. The best part about other open world games is the story building you get through NPC dialog and little events/items you find hidden throughout.

I won't be rushing out to buy this but may consider it on a sale at some point, thank you so much for everyone who replied to me!

I'd say not really. The game is essentially just combat scenarios over and over, but Bungie is really good at making those feel dynamic and fresh. You also gain new abilities as you level up, which is exciting. Story is super thin, but I'm not sure why people expected such a grand story. Even though it is not an MMO, it is certainly structured like one. Has any MMO been praised for its story? I'm having my fun with it, mostly because the console market has been so devoid of good scifi shooters lately. Still, it's by no means groundbreaking or trying anything terribly new. Borderlands definitely laid down the blueprint for Bungie, I'd say the biggest difference from the two is combat and shared world aspect. The combat is leagues better than Borderlands, but the shared world aspect is completely lost on a game with so little social features. Literally all you can do in game with one another is dance. I've seen some people express that other players might as well be NPCs, which is valid IMO.

I'm level 10 now, so right now there are Story Missions/Stike Missions/ Crucible aka PVP/ Patrol Missions.

So I read that after you reach level 20 there are also raids you can play with 6 players cooperatively, true? If so, how are those structured? How many are there? Are they any good?

The thing about friends is that you have fun playing just about any game together. The true test of a game (as far as a review score) is how it plays without your friends, with random people, or whatever.

To drive that further, there's people who hold Resident Evil 6 is the 9+ range due to its combat system and mercenaries. It's their opinion, but there's a lot of faults in the game I personally can't see/get past.

Same with Titanfall. Would be a strong 9 in gameplay and I spend months with it. But that campaign, lack of really distinct modes, and the matchmaking bring it down. Was incredibly fun, but as a whole and actually looking at the game it wouldn't meet up at that level of 'quality'.

There's nothing wrong with that. The only time it becomes a problem is when people have to force that personal experience on the other's, often in an antagonistic manner.

There's 1 raid, Vault of Glass. You'll have to do a ritual to bring in players to your friends list and fire team so you can unlock the power of communication.

Once you do so, you can choose normal or hard. You'll encounter a variety of challenges that are left up to you to figure out, from platforming to puzzles to bosses. You get no direction in how to complete these, so you have to communicate and strategize to figure it out yourselves.

If you succeed, you get a unique armor piece and/or weapon. Can keep doing the raid to complete the armor sets and obtain each weapon (one for each type).

It isn't unlocked yet and will do so on the 16th, so the only word we've received is from Bungie themselves.

It is a amazing game IMO.

Same here. I think its a really good game. In judging games, to me it all comes down to how fun the game is to play. ANd this game is that. Never expected it to be a innovative, super massive, endless list of things to do, flawless game. It was hyped through the roof but it was their job to sell the shit out of this game. It all comes down to us if we can see past the marketing talk or not. So far the game is entertaining and reaches my quality expectations. No problems with it gettings 7's 8's 9's or 10's. That's their opinion. Personally it is a solid 8.5 to me(Haven't finished the game yet)

All that said... I gotta say, imma give props to Bungie for having servers running smooth as ass from tip off. I played it on launch and up to now I have yet to encounter any server hiccups. Darn, Bungie was ready for this.

I see, thanks. Halo 1 has a simple but very clear story that gives context to everything you see and do. I found it really engaging, which is part of the reason Halo turned me on to FPSs in the first place. Shooting alone isn't enough to keep me interested, so I guess I'll wait and see how the expansions turn out. I want to find out more about the Traveler because it's the only thing I've seen in Destiny that has the vast scale and sense of mystery that grabbed me in Halo. All those crazy Forerunner constructs, including the Halo installation itself. Love that stuff.

I'd say not really. The game is essentially just combat scenarios over and over, but Bungie is really good at making those feel dynamic and fresh. Well, Bungie has always gone pretty in depth with their lore, and they hyped up Destiny's story and setting a lot in their promo material. I think people's story expectations are valid. I'm hoping Bungie takes players' feedback seriously, at least as far as it applies to their original plans for Destiny as a narrative driven social shooter or whatever. They're one of the better devs out there with community interaction, so I'm somewhat optimistic.

I agree and disagree. Yeah, most games are more enjoyable with others. But, if a game is clearly designed to be played in groups, I think reviewers should take that into account. To take it to an extreme example, obviously a reviewer shouldn't knock points off Final Fantasy 14 because it isn't fun to play solo.

I think the huge fault with Destiny is that it doesn't accommodate those playing without friends very well. As I said earlier, Diablo 3 does an amazing job at making it quick and easy to find others to play with. Destiny makes even playing with friends take one or two clicks too many.

If you built your game with multiplayer in mind, but you fail to even implement match making in some of the main modes, you've fucked up.

I feel like the current reviews are just too rushed. This isn't a typical single-player game where the overall feel is given within the first few hours, instead it is one like an MMO where time is needed to get the entire experience. Having people rush through their reviews is disappointing, but that's the game you play when you want first dibs on traffic.

Most of the reviews on the front page are applauding the game, and rightfully so as it is a good game, but they aren't justifying their score in my opinion. Most of them feel shallow in describing the content, simply saying it was "fun, exciting and had guns." I don't know, just me I guess.

In the meantime, our reviewer is running through the game and seems to be enjoying himself. While I share an opposite opinion on him in regards to the story, he feels that the Internet is actually ruining what story Destiny actually has. Worth a read if anyone cares.

Is it me or was there absolutely no plot in this game?

Bro, you have to get that guy a robot's head for some reason so his sister will give you a key or something.

And then you fight a series of statues and save the Traveler. Remember the Traveler? It's that thing on the front cover that we know nothing about.
