Dragon Age: Inquisition Review Thread

Its great its reviewing so well, but so did Dragon Age 2.

I'm waiting for Gaf impressions

Press and media also noticed how bad the reception of DA2 was among gamers, and most of the reviews I've read so far covered some concerns about things that DA2 failed at miserably, so I guess we are safe here. Sure, some will find something to nitpick, but I really don't expect a major backlash, this game is great.

The Polygon review.. he says it was mostly on PS4 that he played, but because of the issues he encountered (some PSN 2.0 related and some others as well) he was going to withhold his score.

Then he gave it a 9.5.. is that an Xbox One/PC score then ? Does the X1/PC versions not have the same bugs ?

Anyone make sense of that?

from Polygon

Notably, the PS4 version of Inquisition frequently froze, locking up the entire system and requiring a full reboot. In a few instances, this reboot process led to corrupted save files. According to representatives from EA, this issue is related to Sony's PlayStation Network 2.0 firmware, which has caused problems for other games on the console as well.

Near the end of the review process, Sony sent Polygon a PlayStation 4 that had an upcoming patch pre-installed ostensibly fixing the 2.0 problems. We played approximately 15 hours on this patched PlayStation 4 and did not experience any crashes. EA says this new PSN patch will be released prior to Dragon Age: Inquisition's release date.

Sony stealth bribing Polygon with free PS4 :)

My game of the forever. No words. Only this:

But the game wasn't a complete piece of shit, people just lost their shit at #3colorgate.

The game was fantastic.

The writing was pretty garbage throughout. That doesn't even cover the extremely narrow scope of the game that was even more streamlined and pared down than ME2.

Add this to the list I had zero interest in now I'm buying.

Shadows of Morder
Dragon Age

Glad i took the week off during christmas, dont know how else ill get time to play these awesome titles

They're all playing on Normal. I guarantee it.

The Eurogamer review mentions something about normal difficulty, so I presume he played on normal. I have been following some of the threads here on gaf, and it's been implied for a long time that if you want strategic play, hard is the way to go.

When are we getting the AC Unity reviews?

Later today at 12:00 noon ET if I'm not mistaken. I'm already prepping ours and I think people will be surprised at the score.

My reviewer played Inquisition on Hard and it took him 55+ hours to finish the game while doing side quests.

Exploration/world looks great...is it like Skyrim? I recall DA1 being some hybrid of connected cities/locations tied together by fast travel, but the cities were pretty big.

I do want to invest in the dialogue/choices...not playing anything else until bloodborne, so a lengthy RPG might be perfect.

I've been slacking as I dont even know much about the combat (enjoyed DA1)

Gamespot review seems nice.

I'm assuming it wont be difficult to keep up with the DA2/DA1 references, all of which I've forgotten.

Hope it runs at a solid 30 FPS. DA1 on PS3 was painful

So, I noticed 2 weaknesses DAI have on 2 reviews:

- Weak plot
- Combat requires relatively little strategy

Those are my only concern.

I don't think the XB1/PC versions will have issues with PS4 firmware, no.

The opening and everything to do with Cerberus was just as bad as the ending.

And the comparisons to Assassin's Creed are worrying me. I don't care how long it is if it's full of garbage filler.

Wait some months for the real reviews/feebacks, imo.
DA 2 had also so really good feedback like Destiny before the backslash of the community months/weeks after the release.

Just saying that I already witnessed hyped reviews like this with Destiny last month.

Yeah great idea. Lots of Gaffers love Destiny, I'm not sure what you think the post launch hate party we have for every game proves.

Give GAF a couple of months and they'll find a way to stuck alk the fun out of any game and pin it as a massive POS :)

This is a really good point. I really want impressions from someone playing on nightmare.

I don't think reviewers should be expected to play at game at its highest difficulty level, that's not realistic.

If I was a reviewer, I would play every game at Default difficulty for review purposes. Why should that not be the case?

Calm down, folks. Metacritic doesn't have THAT many reviews on board yet. That 93 could become an 80 or lower in the next 24 hours.

That is technically still a good score, but it would defy your belief that Bioware has returned.

I never stopped thinking Skyrim was amazing, so the hype isn't just empty for all people.

Correct unfortunately, which has lead us from Dragon Age Origins to where we are today.

I have no doubt it can be a valid 94 for many people. I'm also pretty damn sure based on the reviews that I'm not meant to be one of them.

The game was fantastic.

Not true for everyone. I loved ME1 and ME2 and a few hours into ME3 I couldn't stand it. 100% the first 2 games but I'll be damned if I'll play ME3 again. I know the DLC is supposed to be great but I will not fund what should have been stellar content included with the damn game. They just got greedier. (I surprisingly enjoyed the multiplayer)

So yea I'm wary about critical acclaim. Assassins Creed 3 got rave reviews. Halo 4, Dragon Age 2, majority of Call of Duty, Titanfall all sitting on quite nice metacritic numbers and I can't stand the lot of them. So for me the numbers don't mean very much it's what they actually say the game plays like...and I'm still reading reviews so I don't have an opinion yet!

But I do know Mass Effect 3 sucked and it was very clear while playing.

I love how some people actively want this game to fail so they can say "I told you so" on an internet forum.

Speaking strictly of plot, I don't think any Bioware game dating back to Baldur's Gate has that good of a plot to begin with. I play them for the characters.

My understanding is that it's like Origins in that there are separate areas you visit from a map. Only this time, the areas are absolutely huge (with some individually being larger than all of Origins combined).

Because it's been implied for a long time that if you want strategic gameplay you should play at hard difficulty. Is it too much to ask that reviewers at least try out playing at the harder difficulties when you can change the difficulty real time? If you find the combat to be too easy, this is a small thing to check first.

The big sites are already up, metacritic weighting makes an 80 or lower outright impossible.
